He literally said in an interview once that he "chose" to become a good actor and to do good films (hence the Mccounaissance for awhile there) because he wanted to make his kids proud. Meaning he could have done this all along but just didn't feel like it lol. You see it in some of his early work like U-571 and Reign of Fire and that John Grisham adaptation and Amistad. Sounds like he jumped over to more serious stuff once he had enough money, was able to be picky because of it, and actually started caring about his legacy...at least as it relates to his kids.
