The president was dissuaded from moving ahead with a strike by advisers who warned that it could escalate into a broader conflict in his last weeks in office.

I guess that's one way to head out the door...

You think Trump is erratic and unhinged now? Just wait until the US falls into a recession and he loses the 2020 election.

He’ll declare martial law and nuke Iran.

And I’m not joking.

Commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guards killed by airstrike, days after top nuclear scientist assassinated

Quote

An airstrike killed a senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards at the Iraq-Syria border sometime between Saturday and Sunday, Iraqi security and local militia officials said on Monday.

The commander was killed alongside three other men traveling in a vehicle with him.

The Daily Mail and other outlets have named him as Muslim Shahdan. Citing the Anadolu Agency, the Mail reported that the attack happened in Deir ez-Zor province, Syria.

The vehicle the men were in was carrying weapons across the Iraqi border and was hit after it had entered Syrian territory, two Iraqi security officials separately said.

Iran rejects Biden's terms for reviving nuclear deal

Quote

Iran will not accept preconditions from a new Biden administration over its nuclear programme and the US must return to a 2015 deal before talks can take place, its foreign minister says.

Javad Zarif said the US had its own "commitments" that must be implemented.

President-elect Joe Biden has said he will rejoin the nuclear deal and lift sanctions if Tehran returns to "strict compliance with the nuclear deal".

Both sides appear to want the other to readopt the agreement's terms first.

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal negotiated under his predecessor, Barack Obama.

He then reimposed strict economic sanctions against Iran, targeting the country's oil and financial sectors.

Tehran has since exceeded limits to its nuclear activities set under the deal, raising suspicions that it could be using the programme as a cover to develop a nuclear bomb.

I read "Countdown to Zero Day: Stuxnet and the Launch of the World's First Digital Weapon" last week and thought it was a pretty solid read on one of the more interesting turns in the US/Iran conflict.

That's on my "Must Read" list for this year!

It scratches a lot of itches; history, current events, tech, and the future.
