There is a hurricane headed toward Spain/Africa.

From the weather weirding department: (Citing a NOAA hurricane discussion at 5:00 am AST) "a tropical storm warning has been issued for (Madeira)) island. It is the first known tropical storm warning for that place, and there are no known tropical storms in the historical record anywhere within 100 miles of that island, with the closest being Vince of 2005." And there is a lonnnnnnnnnnnng historical record in Madeira. Perhaps the first tropical cyclone to ever directly impact Madeira in its long history. Yep, the weather patterns are changing.

FEMA head says Florida sucks at hurricane preparedness, also it'd be awesome to have national standards for construction like the ones Trump revoked last year.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Brock Long angrily criticized the failure of citizens to heed evacuation warnings and leaders to better prepare for natural disasters such as Hurricane Michael.

“It’s frustrating to us because we repeat this same cycle over and over again,” Long said during a press briefing Friday at FEMA headquarters in Washington. “If you want to live in these areas, you’ve got to do it in a more resilient fashion.”

“Until we get building codes passed at local and state levels that are meaningful, then we’re going to continue to see a lot of damage and destruction,” Long said.

What would also help, Long said, were federal flood standards governing construction rules, which President Donald Trump revoked last year. He called for changes to the National Flood Insurance Program, which Congress has declined to overhaul despite warnings that the program is out of date.

We need to stop subsidizing people choosing to live in coastal communities with the National Flood Insurance Program. I know several people who bought homes in the area that have had major flood damage about once every decade, and they keep getting literally hundreds of thousands to rebuild, many making money off it because the payout was well in excess of their actual costs.

I thoroughly agree!

A way to disincentivize rebuilding could be to reduce the payout with each claim - 1st claim: 100%, 2nd claim: 60%, 3rd claim: 20%, etc.
