SPIES IN DISGUISE (4K) 3.25/5

Not a bad movie but nothing special either. A few adult stuff in there but overall geared towards the kids. Overall the disc looked pretty good in 4K but a little spoiled from the high caliber Toy Story 4 disc released. The Atmos track packs a good punch and the overheads are used pretty well too. Too bad this doesn’t have a 3D release on disc anywhere but some scenes just scream in your face action.

MiB: INTERNATIONAL (4K) 2/5

It started ok and the energy aliens were a cool design/powers. Yet the story was predictable (cause they tell you so) and never amounted to anything awe inspiring/unique like the 1st/3rd movie were. Again a good looking disc and a pretty great sounding Atmos track as well. Again kinda of wish a 3D option were out there on disc to, because a few scenes look like they were geared for it. Not like I would need to watch it again anyways

I needed a movie to kick me right in the nostalgias and had this one saved on my DVR.

jpeg

7/10

It's actually a bit boring until the final 30 but the game and movie score really bring it.

Probably for the best that the movie ended where it did to give us the "happy" ending.

Jojo Rabbit

loved it, amazing dialogue and it took the a dark enough turn to keep it honest. The main child actor was excellent as well.

9.5/10

Aeronauts

1860s balloon adventure, it was a perfectly acceptable way to spend 100 minutes

6.5/10

Cats

You watched the trailers, you read the reviews, you are not prepared. It isn't just the weird CGI cat people that are horrible, literally 80% of the plot is just cats coming out and singing a song to introduce themselves, that is all the movie is. I want to know how many people had to say "yes" at some point for this abomination to be made.

even worse than you thought it would be/10

Pinocchio

10/10

I originally watched this because of Park Shin-hye not expecting much from the show going by the synopsis but I was blown away. It's kind of about how fake news (real fake news) can destroy lives. In this case a boy's father perished n a firefighting accident but because a Pinocchio (In this world there is a disease called Pinocchio syndrome where the person who has it cannot lie or they hiccup) thought he saw the father the media placed the blame on him and basically the boy's mother kills herself over the harassment from the media and the boy is rescued and lives as an old man's son. It's an interesting sort of show that makes you feel happiness, sadness and maybe a little creeped out at the same time. It also gave me a Veronica Mars type of vibe (because the idea of the show is that this guy goes on to become a reporter to uncover the truth about his father) so there are a lot of young reporters investigating things and stuff like that. In any case, yeah really great!

Venice Underground: 5/10

So Netflix sent me this and it's been sitting around since July of last year so I decided to watch it. This has got Danny Trejo, Tito Ortiz, and Edward Furlong in it. (Among others) Francis Capra if you remember him from Veronica Mars. I think I probably rented it because I wanted to see Jodi Lyn O'Keefe in a movie.

So anyway the movie is bad. (I know I was dangling this out there like @Greatoneshere ) Got some bizarre editing, bad story, dialogue, etc. (Written AND Directed by Eric DelaBarre)

But it's watchable I suppose. 🤷 I think you could reboot this movie, make some edits and it would probably be pretty cool.

Onward 3.5/5 it was good enough but really lacked that special something you would expect with a Pixar movie.

Sonic 2.5/5 more of a kids movie than I thought it would be. I can’t help but think of x-men every time a movie does the super speed slow mo. And how x-men did it better.

I've been watching a slew of 60's and 70's Gothic Horror and Giallo flicks on Amazon Prime...most of them have sucked so far.

Long Hair of Death 7/10

The one I enjoyed the most so far.

Don’t be a putz , list them. I was gonna do the same thing and need to know which ones to avoid.

Damn, Mr. Testy over here.

I don't know, you might like them, I think I've just lost a bit of my tolerance for boring ass 60's/70's Horror plots. I basically like the ones with cool, real locations and dramatic cinematography exclusively. The ones I can remember...I've been getting high every time I go for an evening of this:

1. Night of the Devils - cool, gory Italian countryside Horror, kind of reminded me of Let Sleeping Corpses Lie a tad. The locations are eerie so that sold me.

6.5/10 maybe

2. Twins of Evil - Great sets but pretty fucking boring Hammer horror. I was never a huge fan of Hammer for some odd reason.

6/10 for the sets.

3. The Red Queen Kills 7 Times - Gothic giallo...I only watched maybe half of it, it was somewhat stylish at least but incredibly boring at points.

??/10, will watch the rest later.

4. Re-watch of Kill Baby Kill but that doesn't count, one of my favorite Gothic Horror flicks. Totally out of control in terms of sets and one of my favorite Italian flicks as well.

9/10

5. Long Hair of Death - It's kind of like a lower budget Black Sunday. I'm not sure which came first but I'd imagine Black Sunday, I didn't look up the year. Typically Italian...lurid, a little trashy and yet often gorgeous. Sadly the coolest sequence was the whole beginning but I still dug it overall.

7/10

6. Blood Spattered Bride - I can't even remember this one, they all bleed into each other, I think it was boring as fuck and I turned it off?

??/10

The free trial of CBS all access has us watching through the Good Fight, which is very easy to recommend to anyone who enjoyed The Good Wife. We've been very much enjoying the "silly lawyery stuff that is based on real life just enough to make it interesting but not so much that it's depressing" vibe of it.

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER (4K) 3/5

Amazingly, I went into this movie pretty spoiler free. Still, the surprises weren’t much and some a little forced in there (no pun intended) The script had some cool ideas, but it also felt like everything was thrown into the kitchen sink in hopes that all comes out squeaky clean. Looks like they missed a few spots or it was clean enough and people won’t really notice. The 4K disc though looks pretty good to absolutely stunning. The Final Order scene with all the lasers, lights and explosions going off. Looks just spectacular with the HDR kicking in, inky black skyline/space scenes with this going on, was pure eye candy with my JVC NX7 projector. The Atmos track wasn’t bad either, but could use a slight bit more overhead action here and there but no problems subwoofer wise (after the usual Disney sound adjustment upwards) I’ll watch it again in a month or so and see if my opinion changes, as my 3D import will be here by then hopefully

Captain Marvel: 7/10 - Another origin movie but this one might as well been a Nick Fury and Captain Marvel origin story. I thought it was fine, nothing amazing. Kind of leaned too heavily into 90s nostalgia. Also Brie Larson, a good actor, don't feel she was right here. Felt kinda too nice, where was the attitude?

The Devil's Advocate - 7/10

This is one of those bigger 90's flicks I somehow missed and always only saw a scene of here and there at most. I thought it was pretty good but somehow expected more of the story and 'scope'. Cool premise and I was really liking Al Pacino's antics in this but outside of that. And my god, the acting...the accents...lord have mercy.

I did actually think the evil lawyer shit was pretty fun as a starting point for a story but they didn't really do much with it  ultimately and it devolved into "Al Pacino being rowdy" sequences. That being said, I liked the overall atmosphere of the whole thing and some of the satanic ranting.

Given The Devil's Advocate came out before The Matrix did by a few years, the Neo reference could not have worked. :p

I watched a Matt Damon double bill of Downsizing and Suburbicon. It was kinda funny to see him play a genuinely good guy and the a horrifically bad guy back to back.

I actually found Downsizing to be very enjoyable even though it was not what I expected. Some of it was a little on the nose, but the performances were mostly fun and I’m kinda glad they ditched the “look at this goofy small world stuff” about a third of the way in and just dealt with the character and who he was. I mean...they really could have told the same story without the actual miniaturization hook, which is kinda funny to think about.

Suburbicon was bad. Virtually nothing redeeming. It thought itself way smarter than it actually was. A real shame considering the people involved.

Mandy: 7/10 - Maybe a bit generous with the score. When I first saw the trailers for the movie I thought well, Beyond the Black Rainbow looked nice but was nonsense. This was a bit more cohesive but kind of all over the place. Panos Cosmatos still making movies that are nice to look at or get high to watch or something but the rest didn't really do much for me.

Didn't make it through the entire first episode. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be funny, sad, I have no idea but it felt like it didn't know either and was just awkward and weird. The amount of boring cardboard-cutout characters on display within the first 15 minutes had me cringing in my seat, the writing was so brutally on the nose and without seemingly any wit. I mean, just a tiny bit more effort than 'Generic 2020 Terrible White Cliche stands over here and says generic stupid shit while main characters rant at them and roll their eyes and literally say "I hate white people"' would've maybe made this watchable and even slightly funny maybe?

I already owned all the DVDs but decided to rewatch Community over the past couple weeks since some friends were interested since it dropped on Netflix, I needed to rewatch seasons 4-6, and, well, comedy is very necessary in life right now. I'm a fan of the parody, the callbacks, the meta, and all the pop, and not-so-pop, culture references the show throws at you. Did you know that Community is my favorite?

Season 1: 9.2/10 - The pilot is weak and the next few episodes are meh but it hits its stride after the Halloween episode. Everyone praises Modern Warfare but I'd rather watch Debate 109, Physical Education, and Contemporary American Poultry over it any day.

Season 2: 9.8/10 - A damn near perfect season with only a few misses for an entire season. Stand-outs include: Cooperative Calligraphy, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design, and Paradigms of Human Memory. Too many memorable episodes to mention.

Season 3: 8.8/10 - IIRC, this didn't air on-time with the rest of the NBC lineup, a couple episodes were aired out-of-order, and many thought the show was done after this season. It still pulled together another great season of TV with the obvious standout episode - Remedial Chaos Theory. Other favorites include: Regional Holiday Music, The Pillows & Blankets 2-parter, Basic Lupine Urology, and Digital Estate Planning.

Season 4: gas leak 7.0/10 - So begins the shortened-season era. The show is back for season 4 (only 13 episodes) but is missing creator Dan Harmon after being fired for his feud with Chevy. The gang is still there but obviously there's something missing in the story. It wasn't all bad. Basic Heroic Origins along with Herstory of Dance were solid. The latter of which, Harmon likely didn't mind since one of the few carryovers from season 4 was Brie Larson as Rachel.

Season 5: 8.5/10 - Harmon is back. Most of the gang is back. The comedy felt reminiscent to the better years. Hickey was a great addition to the group. It did have 2 episodes that were basically rehashes of 2 classic season 2 episodes but I thought they were well done. Three of their best episodes were back-to-back-to-back: Basic Intergluteal Numismatics, Cooperative Polygraphy,  and Geothermal Escapism. Also checkout App Development and Condiments.

Season 6: 8.0/10 - The final final final season. Cancelled by NBC, picked up by Yahoo Screen, which ultimately cancelled its service a couple years a later. I thought the new additions to group were great as was Abed's line about "hemorrhaging" concerning the group. The comedy was mostly there and the group dynamic obviously wasn't the same but not bad by any stretch. Standouts include: Intro to Recycled Cinema, Grifting 101, and the 3rd, and final, series finale, Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television.
