~*Official Iran/Israel War Watch Thread*~ update (04/18): Israeli missiles target military airbase in Iran

Might as well post this thread because it genuinely appears that the situation is going to come to a head in the relatively near future.

Six months after Hamas terrorists invaded Israel on Oct. 7, the Israeli military continues its bombardment of the neighboring Gaza Strip.

U.S. officials continue to see indicators that Iran could be ready to attack Israel with missile and drone strikes.

Iran has readied a large number of missiles for a possible strike, according to three U.S. officials. Two of the officials said that Iran has readied more than 100 cruise missiles for a possible strike. Iran has also readied a sizeable number of drones that could be used in an attack on Israel, according to one official.

The officials said that Iran has been readying the missiles and drones over the last week.

Iran sent a message to the Biden administration through several Arab countries earlier this week: if the U.S. gets involved in the fighting between Israel and Iran, U.S. forces in the region will be attacked, three U.S. officials told Axios.

Why it matters: The U.S. and Israel are preparing for Iran to retaliate against Israel for an airstrike that killed a top Iranian general in Damascus last week.

  • The Iranian supreme leader has threatened "punishment" for Israel but through private channels Iran has signaled it would be limited.
  • Israel and the U.S. think an Iranian attack would include the launch of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones from Iran to Israeli territory.
  • U.S. officials say the Biden administration asked Israel to notify the U.S. and for the U.S. to have a say before decisions are made about any retaliation by Israel.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told his German counterpart on Thursday that Iran is determined to respond to Israel's bombing of its consular building in Damascus last week, but will do so in an "appropriate" and limited way, a source with direct knowledge of the call told Axios.

Why it matters: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock initiated the call at the request of the Biden administration, which is highly concerned that an Iranian attack on Israel over the strike in Damascus — which killed a senior general — could lead to regional escalation.

Behind the scenes: The 90-minute call between Baerbock and Amir-Abdollahian focused almost entirely on the recent tensions, according to the source with knowledge of the call.

  • The source added that while the Iranian foreign minister said during the call that the Iranian response will be limited, it is unclear how Iran defines a limited response.
  • Baerbock conveyed a message from the U.S., warning Amir-Abdollahian not to underestimate the scope of the Israeli response to an attack against it from Iranian soil, the source said.
  • Iran's Foreign Ministry said Amir-Abdollahian told his German counterpart that Israel had violated international law and the Vienna Convention with its attack, and "legitimate self-defense with the aim of punishing the aggressor is a necessity."

Thinking they'll close the Strait?

That course of action will be largely dependent on what Tel Aviv does.

In all seriousness, I do believe that regardless of whatever intel we have, the Iranian response will be less than we anticipate.

While that could very well be the case, what will the Israelis do in return?  How do they calibrate their retaliatory action?

Part of me thinks Iran will aim at some well-protected military installations with missiles that are all but intended to be intercepted.

Iran seems to be really light-footed when it comes to the escalation ladder (especially in regards to our kinetic exchanges with them) so that's why I think this will be underwhelming.

Now, how badly Tel Aviv overreacts... that's on them!

The Iranians have already signaled that the targets will be Israeli military/intelligence facilities which is why Tehran believes that the attack is calibrated to mitigate the risk of significant escalation by Tel Aviv.

However, as you correctly stated, the escalatory "wild card" in this is the Israeli government.

The drones on their own are an annoyance - the real concern would be if their objective is to overwhelm air defenses in order to facilitate ballistic missiles which would be timed to impact at the same time the drones arrive so those launches would occur much later.
