The bill is a direct challenge to federal marriage equality protections.

Quote

The Republican-controlled Tennessee state House of Representatives voted on Monday to pass a bill that would allow county officials to deny same-sex or interracial couples marriage licenses.

Or for any reason the clerks want.

Ooh, is Brown v Board of Education next on the list?

No, but two things:

1) loving v Virginia would be the interracial marriage case and somehow that didn’t make it with into justice Thomas’ concurrence  listing every other similar case that he wants to “revisit”

2) between the push for private schools and white flight, schools are more segregated now than before brown.

This is probably a design to get the issue back in the courts, since Roe was so recently overturned. The majority opinion even suggested looking at existing right to privacy cases.

yep the Supreme Court has all but promised they’ll repeal these protections if a case comes before them.
