The single largest demographic seeking help for compulsive gambling, by a HUGE margin, over the past 18 months, has been young men between the ages of 21 and 30. And while the stats are somewhat questionable, our best current estimates are that 1 in 900 compulsive gamblers seeks help from GA, and while there are certainly other programs available for treatment, few have the (admittedly limited) success rate of a 12-step program. One of, if not the greatest dangers, of the mass proliferation of legalized gambling, is the lingering perception that problem gambling is limited to 50+ year old guys at the track or OTB. It's hard to forecast how devastating this growth and expansion of gambling will ultimately prove to be, but I'm pretty confident that the answer is that it will be far, far worse than we are imagining now. I'm on the board of trustees for NYIG (basically the governing body for Gamblers Anonymous in NY), and we're now dealing with questions like - if a 16 year old calls the GA hotline or shows up at a meeting alone after getting information from the website, do we have an ethical obligation to disclose this to their family? There isn't any legal obligation, but ethically - it's a challenging question, and a terrible one to have to deliberate on. And it's a question that is coming up with increased frequency, because it's started happening.3 points

It is time for the feds to treat gambling like cigarettes and ban nearly all advertising of it. It should be legal to participate in, but the constant stream of marketing is truly gross stuff.3 points

It’s so gross. Hearing about someone’s fantasy team is boring as shit, but listening to someone drone on and on about their parleys or whatever the fuck is just awful. I’d rather read City of God by St. Augustine than hear about someone’s bets.2 points

If I'm understanding Jerry correctly here (which is a little hard because he's not being totally coherent), what he's lamenting here is the death of the monoculture. He misses the day when everyone watched the same comedies at the same time. He thinks society was better off when we could bond over the same comedies together. Now there are plenty of reasons why the monoculture no longer exists, and it's a topic that has been written about at length for years, but Jerry seems to be purely blaming "PC culture" for this. This doesn't fully make sense to me. Obviously we have way more entertainment options than we used to. A modern sitcom could never be as popular as Cheers was, even if it's the best show ever. Now that we have more choices people have more specific tastes that can be catered to. I feel like it was about a decade ago that Jerry started being vocal about PC culture, saying he no longer will perform at colleges because they are too sensitive. I think he's just upset that younger generations don't connect to his comedy and he would rather blame something else rather than admit his type of comedy is no longer relevant.2 points

Well, it's been a whole year since Redfall was unleased upon the public, so let's check-in on how it's doing, shall we? Oh dear...well, surely they've released at least one of the two promised DLC characters that were sold as part of the deluxe Bite Back Edition and are still being sold as an upgrade to the base game. What's that? They haven't released even one of those characters? Oh goodness! Alright, well what about that offline mode? They must've gotten that out the door, right? Oh...oh dear1 point

Just to clarify. Helldivers 2 would be the best selling game of the year without PC. It wouldn't be in the top 20 of Sony's all time sales without PC.1 point

Bit of a necro bump, but this thing is back in the news: FTC fines Razer for every cent made selling bogus “N95 grade” RGB masks ARSTECHNICA.COM “Deceptive advertising and misinformation posed a risk to public health." "The proposed settlement against Razer includes a $100,000 civil penalty, plus $1,071,254.33, which the FTC said is equal to the amount of revenue Razer made from the Zephyr" So they knew that it wasn't providing N95 grade protection, but continued to sell the thing. What a bunch of morons. Also, how in the world did they sell 10,000 of these things?1 point

I'd love to see anyone with ambition in the space to just hire the whole team. So many big companies are entering this space that could absorb them. Mercedes, Electrify America (VW), Rivian, GM, and basically every other automaker are doing something. I was just listening to a podcast with the head of Merc and they said Merc was getting into building out a "critical mass" of chargers in the US and they were going to hand that project to their "customer experiences" team that mostly does things like sell insurance. Hiring a whole group that already knows everything sure seems like a way to supercharge that project.1 point

The need for such legislation speaks to the reality that a bachelors degree is viewed like a high school diploma was 30-40 years ago, the bare minimum hiring managers expect. The problem is that the requirement began being applied to nearly every type of job you can imagine. There are amusing anecdotes about firms/government agencies making the requirement essentially across the board such that you could find basic janitorial positions being listed online with bachelors degree required. There are similar issues with work experience requirements for absolutely every level office jobs. Like…bruh, that’s the job where you GET the experience needed for your next job! So again, lie to these jokers and say you have relevant experience because these firms aren’t your friend and being employed is better than not.1 point

College degrees often don’t teach you anything directly useful for a job but do teach you how to learn and communicate. Maybe less than a third of my engineering class still works in a field that requires an engineering degree and it’s only been ~ten years out. And the vast majority of those still with an engineering degree required job work at like a chemical/energy super major or in academia. but a degree is still a better signal than any other single signal to indicate a decent ability to work and is easy to filter on given the volume of applicants each opening can get.1 point
-
It is the exact opposite. The move to largely automated pre-screening of job applicants has meant upward pressure on having a baseline of a bachelors degree for large swaths of even entry level jobs that previously would have required only a high school diploma. If you don’t have a degree, lie and say you do on your resume and hope the company doesn’t use any verification services in their HR department 😂1 point

I can't get into that. I watched the music video and I just have a very difficult time connecting to that type of art. Spider-Verse impressed visually but I also really enjoy Spider-Man. I don't go out of my way to watch this type of stuff. I'll pass on this series but thanks @legend for trying to introduce me.1 point

GTA 6 will revitalize the industry for both software and hardware. It will take us into next gen where profits are back to where they should be. But right now it's kinda halftime for Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo is it's own beast.1 point

I totally believe this is the case, though it's so foreign to me -- I tend to have the opposite mentality in my group's large software base. I regularly want to burn everything down and start fresh. In the cases where we can't because we have some annoying legacy dependency, I'm counting the days to get rid of it and pushing for the steps that will allow ourselves to be free of it so that we can do something new and better.1 point

For those of you who happen to have fond memories or HBO's 'OZ' back in the late 90s, the creator Tom Fontana (who currently owns the rights to the OZ IP) wrote a short film which came out earlier today. Got turned onto this by following Kirk Acevedo (Miguel Alvarez) and he states that IF there's enough buzz, we may very well go back to OZ State Correctional Facility. So without further adieu, here it is:1 point

It doesn’t matter if Trump wins this election. Eventually, we’re going to get a republican authoritarian president and that will be the end of the current era of American politics (and possibly America itself). Best to just prepare and accept it at this point.1 point

Just as an aside, you may be aware of this but Quentin Tarantino's long-time film editor Sally Menke (since Reservoir Dogs, did every single one of his films), passed away unfortunately at age 56 in a kind of freak heat-related hiking accident in LA in 2010. The last film she did of his was Inglourious Basterds. Now I'm not sure if there's been a clear difference in his films' editing since then, Jackie Brown and Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill Vol. 2 have numerous scenes where Tarantino just lets a lot of time pass luxuriating in a scene, building dialogue and tension (and those were with Sally Menke). Just to name some examples of films of his people think are "slower" or have more fluff. Django Unchained, his first movie without her, is edited pretty well and moves at a pretty good clip. But, that may explain things to some degree. You lose such a close collaborator in such a key position after so long I imagine something unfortunately is permanently lost in transition.1 point

lmfao. Conservatives care about the other. lolol. Thors beard what a load of shit. Let’s ask them how they feel about trans people real quick. As I said, fucking miss me with this bullshit. But I do not care about conservatives and their families either, I am just not trying to burn the country down over it. They would love my niece, until they meet her interracial gay parents then it's an issue. This just in, rich powerful white people have never cared about poc in this shithole country, more news at 10. But remind me, how many people voted yay on that legislation? But yep, totally a Biden thing only. Again, miss me. This board has called me a hateful bigot for my views on islam before, i do not give a shit. I've lived this life, I have been insulted by mouth breathers for my views and who I am my whole ass life, fuck em, I hate them as only someone who has been attacked for being lgbtqi can. at least liberals won't attack me for going to PRIDE whereas conservatives will call me a groomer because I took my niece to a drag show in a park while they talk about breeding 16 yos and watch "Alpha Male" content like the fucking losers they are. I was speaking in general terms as someone you're portraying yourself to be, specifically in reference to american conservatives. lol, anti-union sentiment is a hallmark conservative trait, wtf. Pretending otherwise means I can completely ignore you like you did the Regan and Bushx2 administrations.1 point
