Possible discovery of life on Venus

Recommended Posts

Well, this is exciting! But now down to the first order of business, what slur will be used to refer to our first discovered neighbor, of any kind in the universe?  Dirty "Atmos" Perhaps? Whatever the eventual term, and please feel free to play along,  it must be read it with an angry southern drawl for best effect! :sun:

@Mr.Vic20  I don't think it can have an angry Southern draw. As a Warhammer 40k fan the only option is Xenos. Foul Xenos.

Here's the summary. Yeah, it's high up in the atmosphere. Which is very acidic. I guess the next step is a space probe.

Or going full Death Star and just murking Venus on principle.

Acidity is only a problem if the material/life negatively reacts with it.  Sulfuric acid is nasty stuff, but it does squat to silica, for instance.

This solar system and eventually the galaxy belong to mankind. We gotta murk Venus. Don't care if they are just single cell organisms. Gotta squash that bug while it's still small so to speak.

The leaks/rumours are that phosphine gas has been discovered in Venus' atmosphere. Phosphine is created by life, as well as artificially in lab environments. If (and it's an if) life exists on Venus, it is likely in a layer of the atmosphere.

Hmmm... sounds a lot like vespene gas...

Very cool stuff.

Looking at the list of missions we've sent to Venus, it seems we've sent a bunch of orbiters over the years, including one from the ESA that orbited from 2006-2015. Only the Russians ever bothered to land anything, and those landers didn't last long, as one might imagine.

One nice thing about sending things to Venus is they don't take too long, relatively speaking.

No clue if how comprehensive this wiki is, but it doesn't look like there are any planned trips to Venus at the moment. I wonder if that will change given this discovery.
