The little blueish gravestone symbol must be on the left side of the screen and you have to have enough FP to cast the spirit as well.

Basically the game dictates where you can use them by having that gravestone icon pop up.

Ahh, so that's what that symbol is for! I have had it on and off for a while but I've never tried when it was up. Good to know!

Anyone find any good/cool Dex weapons? I still haven’t found anything better than using my starting scimitars together. Been saving my upgrade shards but might just cave and start upgrading the scimitars.

Dual weilding katanas maybe?

This game is just phenomenal, almost unbelievable the sheer size and scale of it while also having so many completely unique and extremely detailed areas jam packed with stuff to do. Everywhere you go feels like any highly designed area you'd find in any other Souls game, but so much grander and more interesting. The art is stellar, the sense of adventure is great, the combat is fantastic.

It's still a bit weak on the tech side and just as vague on story as ever, but those almost don't even rate when compared to everything so masterfully designed on display here.

Just beat the Graft boy, and when you leave the castle, you get a simple little exit that leads out to some trees before coming upon the same view you've already seen so many times, but the way it's framed and everything just made it amazing despite being nothing new. It was like that first moment of freedom in an Elder Scrolls game, except it looked better and was over a dozen hours in.

I brought up Zelda in my previous post which I typed up in a hurry, but forgot to mention that one of the reasons I originally loved Zelda was that sense of adventure, that the world was really big and you never knew what cool new magic or tool or weapon you'd find in the next area, and this is exactly that. Normally in a Souls game I basically just go full into the basic stats and hit shit with a sword or a hammer until the end, but now that it feels less linear and more like a grand adventure I find myself really wanting to put points into the magic stats to use all these spells I keep finding. After all, being prepared is a big part of exploring a world, and being able to do a little of everything seems so much more important and satisfying than it is for me in other Souls games, where deviating from the "get big weapon swing lots" feels like you're wasting stat points in some hybrid build. Here I want to do so much and I love it. I try every new weapon I get, I look at all my armor, I work towards being able to cast my spells, and my options expand and expand.

It's unreal how good it is.

Are you fighting him on horseback or no? I thought he was kinda the horseback fight introduction.

I am. I think the issue is I rolled an astrologer and I do so little physical damage and he deflects my magic back at me with his shield. So I just gallop around him and chip away. Each hit barely does anything and eventually he just catches me. Best ive done was maybe get him down  2/3rds.

Yea I mean as with everything else the game explains it in some obtuse jargon when in reality it's as simple as "when game gives you HUD icon, can use".

You can also level them up.

Traversing around Stormveil Castle was so cool...Snuck up the side all the way to the knight in the locked room, unlocked the room with the ladder, took that to the rooftops, then jumped around until getting to the little courtyard with the halberd knight, then jumped to the roof with the hole in it, only to drop down and realize I was in the main gate area, then I snuck as long as I could and made a mad dash to the bonfire right before Godrick (went and activated the one across the hallway too). I'm still not entirely sure how or where to activate the big elevator with the halberd knight at the top, and I'm sure there is plenty of other stuff I haven't seen or found yet.

I explored the shit out of the castle and I'm willing to bet that big elevator is some later shortcut maybe? I couldn't find it either but might go back tonight to investigate some more.

What weapon do you have? Might be time to level it up more? I didn't do a ton of damage with the Estoc but about maybe...90 on each hit?

Also you can equip your staff or whatever to your right hand prior and switch between magic and melee.

I was using my starting short sword for s while that I got up to +2 and then put an ashes of war on it that allegedly made it a quality weapon.

I finally got a straight sword that does more damage at base than my short sword +2, so ive been using that and then equiped the ashes of war to make it quality. I might leveled it to +1, I dont remember.

I want to say I do around 50-60 damage. Im sure if i was patient and kited a lot I could bring him down, but it would take forever and I lose my patience.

Any tips on where to find the magic merchant?

There are a couple

The most obvious one is (I'm not sure if this is considered a spoiler since it happens to everyone but I'll put it in spoilers)

Spoiler

The dude at the roundtable keep

And the other one I know of is

Spoiler

At the waypoint ruins, you have to fight the pumpkinhead to get to her. There are poisonous flower monsters outside.

I found a flail in one of the big mausoleum carts near the gate ruins. I dont know if its necessarily a Dex weapon but mine was too low to use it.

Got invaded for the first time last night. That's supposed to be fun? I went back to playing offline immediately. Fuck that noise.

Unless you were playing co-op it was a fake NPC invader (usually easy to tell)

In Elden Ring (unlike past titles) you will only get invaded if you have summoned someone else.

Im level 45 on my Vagabond, and im still using my long sword, and the axe I got from the cart being pulled by the trolls. My Astrologer is 29, and he got a sweet staff which is I found exploring that kicks ass.

Yes, do you know where the cart being pulled by trolls are? Up the hill there are some ruins with a staircase down, and a pumpkin head boss. Kill the boss and become her apprentice. She's behind the door in back of the boss.

The roundtable one is incantation I believe, and the other is sorcery.

I think the exile armor is cool-ish. You can get it from the mobs in the castle.

Not a great image, but it's what you'll see most of the time anyway.

This is actually kind of a Dex weapon. Its base Dex scaling is a C. I'm also running this right now and it's a really great weapon. I have it upgraded to +2 I think and it hits like a truck. Absolutely came in handy in Stormveil. You need Somber Smithing Stones to upgrade it since it's a special weapon. Also inflicts a ton of Bleed.

You can get it by defeating one of the Gaol bosses. The one that's at the south end of the "main" Limgrave area. I forgot what the thing was called but it looks like the Dancer of the Boreal Valley sort of from Dark Souls 3.

Edit: It's Forlorn Hound Gaol. Lore time: this boss is actually the dude the huge wolf guy in Mistwood is looking for if I remember the name correctly.

I started as a Samurai and I'm still rocking the Uchigatana 30 hours in. Why? Bleed damage. Every 5th hit I get a massive amount of bonus damage from bleed proc'ing. Currently I have a +10 Uchigatana, fast, deadly, good reach. Shit against crystal enemies I'm afraid, but my long bow solves that issue just fine!

Uchigatana has always been a great sword in Souls games, I almost went for that myself but I've played it in every game almost so I said not this time chief!

That curved sword up there from the Gaol is the one I'm using, and also does bleed damage.

I cropped this intentionally to make it hard to tell what's going on, but I think if you know you know. Bleed seems to deal percentage damage, so this blockade took several of them, as you can see. I think I did like 100k damage total, would've taken like a solid hour if not for bleed, but with bleed, only took about 1-2 minutes!

Free 75k runes yay!
