Advertisers flee X, Apple "pauses" advertising, after Musk endorses white supremacist anti-Semitic theory espoused by Tree of Life shooter and ads appear next to Nazi propaganda

But her boss last night endorsed the pernicious antisemitic conspiracy theory that Jewish people are supporting “hordes of minorities” who are “flooding” into the country to replace white people. That conspiracy theory was the same one that motivated the deadly 2018 Tree of Life synagogue shooting.

The Tree of Life shooter, who was found guilty this year, wrote on far-right platform Gab that he blamed Jewish people in the U.S. “for bringing in an invasion of nonwhite immigrants.” (Gab owner Andrew Torba is also one of the people cheering on Musk; Gab’s X account even bragged about red-pilling Musk on “JQ” – that is, the “Jewish question.”)

How did we get from a mass shooter writing something on a platform that most people have never visited to Musk endorsing it? First, Musk himself has rebuilt X around extremists like this, making a concentrated effort to lift up extremism, even providing financial incentives.

Fallout:

More advertisers are pulling back from Elon Musk’s platform.

When IBM froze its advertising on Thursday, the company issued a statement to The Verge saying it would investigate “this entirely unacceptable situation.”

At least two other organizations have halted ads today, too. Bloomberg reports Lionsgate “has suspended all advertising on X, effective immediately,” and Politico said that the European Commission sent an internal message to leaders noting it has stopped advertising there due to “widespread concerns relating to the spread of disinformation.”

Axios cites unnamed sources in a report that Apple is pausing advertising on X. Sources tell The Verge’s Alex Heath that Apple has been one of the largest advertisers on the platform. It routinely purchased ads promoting new products and bought custom “hashflag” emoji animations for high-profile events that would change the reaction of the like button on tagged posts.

Apple should probably do more than pause.

Probably the hundreds of millions of users has something to do with it.

I think they meant more as a company still advertising there now, when it’s pretty obvious the anti semitic white supremacist push of the platform which is not an overall popular sentiment amongst a lot of people today

I’m soooo happy he is stupid enough to be blatant - Imagine someone with this much wealth and power that wasn’t a fucking idiot, the damage they could do!

There are plenty, you just hear about the morons.  Everyone knows who Jeff Bezos is, but you don't hear so much about what he does.  The GOP is well funded and most of their benefactors don't get on social media to whine about people being unfair to Nazis.

The funny thing about this to me is that to operate a social network in Germany you need to be able to filter out nazi content. Use that filter and just don't sell ads next to that content and it gets rid of much of this problem.

Guess Nazi shit is where people draw the line.  Also unrelated, that picture of Linda keeps being used everywhere and her legs weird me out every time... Like she needs leather pants that are colored just a little further from her skin tone than that...
