General Gaming How do Fallout 3/New Vegas hold up?

I saw that these were steeply discounted on the Microsoft store (and New Vegas is on game pass) and was curious how they hold up.  I played a little bit of Fallout 3 when it was released and enjoyed it but have never really sunk my teeth into these games.  Are the backwards-compatible 360 versions of these games worth playing?

NV is worth playing, FO 3 is not IMO.  NV is a better sequel to the originals in just about everyway, whereas FO3 is just a game set in the FO universe, so its much easier to forgive the games dated tech.

FO3 did get that 4K patch for the Xbox so if on console that’s the way to go.

I feel completely the opposite.  NV was when a ton of fetch quests got introduced whereas FO3 had the best side quests with its own story.

I think both games are good and worth playing through though.  I've replayed both games numerous times.  I remember NV having more fun builds though (unarmed and cowboy).

I actually tried Fallout 3 for the first time like two years ago and I was bored to tears. I'm sure it was awesome when it came out but everything seemed so ancient when I was trying it.

I tried NV in 2015  and couldn't do it. Couldn't get into FO3 when it was new. I just don't think these games are for me.

I can't speak for 3 because I haven't played it in like a decade, but Vegas is still pretty fun. I find it to be pretty glitchy even on PC though.

If you get Fallout 3 make sure you put the correct number of cores in the ini otherwise you'll get a crashes every 5 minutes.

Like all modern Bethesda games, they play like unwashed ass and in terms of RPGs they're sad echoes of the originals, with NV being leagues ahead of 3. But they still hold that exploration hook that might not be quite as strong these days.

 

You might get really into them. Many people still do. But definitely don't go for the console versions. They can look, play and feel like much newer games with even minimal modding.

I said this in another thread a while ago, but if you are looking for a great fallout game... Play wasteland 3. It is great, has much of the same setting and humor. Plus its on gamepass.

I vaguely liked Fallout 3 when it came out but had a lot of issues with it. Tried replaying it two years ago or so and thought it was boring as fuck all around. The combat sucks especially hard.

I think NV is worth it on PC, but not on console. There are some annoying things (weapon durability), but overall the choices and story are more interesting than FO3 or FO4.

Definitely was, I beat it originally but I just never liked the feel of the combat whatsoever. Feels weak and boring to me.

You know, the most fun I ever had in FO4 was with a "slaughter" build: Power armour and shotguns. No VATS, just steamrolling through every building and pumping shells.

That sounds more like the type of "fun" when you're just tired of playing the game and you want to plow through as quickly as you can like at the end of Oblivion when you'd just run through the oblivion gates and not even stop to attack the enemies.

Unfortunately FO4 inevitably turns into the sci-fi equivalent of a stealth archer build if you try to mix-max, so sometimes you gotta just have fun!

I realized I had $5 on the Microsoft store so I went ahead and got Fallout 3 anyway.  It feels incredibly dated, but there is something really compelling about it and I've had a lot of fun with it today.  I might not stick it out but I've definitely been enjoying it. 

 

I guess I'm craving some sort of action/rpg/adventure game to lose time in as it's getting colder and drearier but I don't know what to play.  Any recommendations for games that scratch this same itch but that people still really like?  Ideally something without complex stats/character builds/hardcore RPG elements, because I find that overwhelming and not a whole lot of fun.  I appreciate the recommendations in this thread so far but I don't have a PC to game on, and I'm not big into base building/settlement/mgmt stuff as much.
