Good Time to be a Gamer!

Was just thinking this yesterday, as I sat there trying to Pre-order a PS5, something I don't necessarily care too much about having right at launch, but still wanted to buy one to be part of the madness and excitement of a new generation.

Is this the first time in History we have so much "Next Gen Tech" all coming at us in such a short time period from all the major players?

Sony with the PS5.

Microsoft with Xbox Series X/S

PC Gamers with the new beastly 30 series.

Nintendo Switch rumors of a Pro model for early next year.

Even Oculus Quest 2 is coming in a month or so.

Regardless of everyone's preferences in Hardware and Software, and after such a shitty and miserable year for most everyone, at least we have all these new exciting things coming to end 2020 with.

Video games have been one of the few bright spots. The sheer level of quality this year has been overwhelming. I thought about that a lot when I went from playing RE3 (not spectacular, but a fun game), and then went into FFVII Remake and thought, "This may be the best soundtrack I've heard all gen."

And then I started Persona 5 Royal and thought, "Wow, a lot more is in this game. Can't wait to see how this plays out."

Then I paused my playtime for The Last of Us Part II and thought, "Wow, this may be one of the best stories I've ever played in a video game," and loved reading people who write for shows/movies praise the writing on Twitter.

Then I went back to Persona 5 Royal and thought, "This was totally worth the money."

Then I paused for Ghost of Tsushima and thought, "This game's really about taking pictures, holy shit. And it shows much more maturity in the studio."

And now I'm back at the very very end game of Persona 5 Royal around 172 hours later.

And then I thought, "If I had a Switch, I think I'd REALLY be digging Animal Crossing right now. Such a sweet and innocent game in such an uncertain time." And then I thought, "Fuck, I still have to play the first Nioh so I can play the second."

And now I'm thinking, "Cyberpunk's coming out this year. And fucking A, I'll have Demon's Souls! And a new Spidey! God, I hope Sackboy and Destruction All-Stars are good!"

And then my brain exploded for thinking too much and I'm typing this post from Heaven.

I had the same thought a couple of days ago... this has been a shitty year overall, but gaming HAS been a bright spot. 2020 has turned out to be a strong year (for me at least). Doom Eternal, Streets of Rage 4, Last of us 2, Ghost of Tsushima and now Avengers. Plus the games in my backlog that I checked off like Dead Rising 4, Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2 remake, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, The Evil Within 2, Far Cry4 and others. Plus one of the proudest moments in my gaming career, beating Sekiro. Easily one of the most challenging games I've ever played. Now we're moving into the next gen and while the launch line up may be a little lackluster for some, the potential of the coming generation gives me a lot to be excited about. @JPDunks4 is right, it IS a great time to be alive as a gamer.

I have a big Genesis case for SoR4 that I got from Limited Run, but right now, I'm thinking with the PS Move controllers I just got, Blood & Truth will follow Persona 5 Royal.

And if I really dig that, then I'll likely buy the recently released Iron Man VR. Shiiiiiiiiiit.

Blood and Truth is awesome. Makes you feel like you're in a Guy ritchie film.

If we are posting awesome gaming stuff here - I am currently about 3/4 of the way through Wasteland 3. I haven't played any of the previous games in the series, but damn this one is great. The action is similar to xcom. It has a ton of loot to gather and upgrade. Almost everything is customizable. The random encounters start off like a D&D game. You can tell the people who made this love games. Highly recommend it - and it is available on gamepass.

I started Wasteland 2 in anticipation of Wasteland 3's release.

I started on the 2nd hardest difficulty and got my ass kicked.  Every fight was difficult, even the opening areas.  I like challenge in my games but my lord I had no idea what I was doing.  I love building up your party though and the very tough choices that come with deciding what skills and attributes to give them.

Then the choices you need to make during the actual gameplay early on had me rethinking my choices.

I love these style of games, and really look forward to playing Wasteland 3.  I think I will finish Wasteland 2 first though.

inXile is a huge pickup for Microsofts 1st Party Studios, and I am very eager to see what they do with their UE5 next gen AAA game.  Probably my most highly anticipated Xbox Studio to see grow.

You know I started Wastland 3 as well without playing Wasteland 1 or 2... I think I may put Wasteland 3 on hold and start 2

One thing is for sure. Sony wants you to give them an arm a leg and maybe an ear to play on their console

Microsoft is like hey we just want you to play games.

(Before you ask I'm just going by Sony supposedly expanding the PS+ to be like game pass but saying they would never add AAA games to it also charging $70 for them)

Sony opts not to undercut its rival this time round but instead will rely on exclusives to woo gamers.

When I questioned Mr Ryan about the possibility of a similar service, he said PlayStation was about big blockbuster games that cost a lot to make, so a similar subscription service model would not make financial sense.

Welp, didn't take long for this thread to turn to console warring.

This generation has been really great for me as well and I have high hopes for PS5 to grab PS4's momentum and run with it. The gen has often felt on the exciting, creative and surprising side for me and that's what I want to see continue with the PS5 and that's what's important to me.

Games that impressed the shit out of me in that way:

Bloodborne

Resident Evil 2 Remake

Prey

Death Stranding

Metal Gear Solid 5

The Surge

God of War

Nioh

Sekiro

SOMA

Hotline Miami 2

There are more but can't think of them right not but I mean...those games left a really lasting impression on me and I was barely even gaming anymore outside of Demon's and Dark Souls the gen prior. That being said, I even have a backlog of games I already know I'll thoroughly enjoy like FF7R, TLoU2, Ghost of Tsushima, several indies and what not.

Let's wrap this up with a great Dave Mustaine gif:

wrestlemania vii wrestling GIF by WWE

PS: I just happen to play Playstation, I'm sure Xbox has been cool as well, just don't have the time nor interest for two main consoles.

This gen has been fairly good.  There's some open world and 'live service' game fatigue, but overall there's still tremendous value to the games we're getting now.  A bit of a scare mid-gen with the loot box craze, but I'm happy that went away.  They 'grey and brown' trope from last gen also went away for the most part.  The industry has largely moved on from appealing to the bro-gamer stereotype, and I couldn't be happier.

AAA games do feel like they're taking slightly longer to make.  But there's still more of them than I'd ever need to play.

Only real downside I can think of is that I've pretty much stopped buying Nintendo games, because they never drop in price anymore.  Player's Choice/Nintendo Selects feels like a distant memory.  But I'm also super happy they rebounded from the Wii U.

I actually attempted 2 a couple of months ago, but I tried it on my xbox from the couch and I couldn't get into it.  I may have liked it better from my PC.  Maybe I will give it another shot when I am done with 3.

It's very hard to talk anything Sony without sniping and angry posts. Apparently it's also mystifying to some board members that people like the PS4.

I am having a good bit of fun with Ghost of Tsushima. I need to pick up the pace and get it beaten.

Remember that the game is really a photography game that happens to have an epic samurai movie as a mini-game.

The photo mode is really fucking good is what I'm saying.

I haven’t even taken a photo, hah.

Well, I did once, by accident. Saw the trophy and was like “huh, cool.”

Well, I usually don't spend a ton of time, but either the way photo mode was set up or the material in the game caused me to spend way more time on this one.

This was me in Bloodborne. Not that it had Photo Mode but I caught myself constantly posing in front of the moon or dilapidated structure for some Goth Porn.

It's weird, I think games haven't ever been better, but I'm also not feeling too great about the future.  The split between indie and AAAA is growing more severe, MTX and GaaS will continue to ramp up, and the homogenization of most big-budget narrative/open-world games makes them feel interchangeable.  I've had some of my best experiences gaming in the past 5-6 years, but also portend a rather bleak future for where games might go as they continue to overtake other forms of media in popularity and revenue.  I think the best stuff will likely come from unexpected places next-gen.  The messy and creative spirit of video games is still alive, it's just a bit harder to find now.

It's too good of a time. There were probably a few things I could've done during lockdown to better myself as a person. Maybe finished that book I've been writing. But no, I sat around and played fuckin' video games the whole time and gained 30 pounds.

Far as I'm concerned, reading a book or playing a video game are two things you can do as hobbies and neither is classier; video games simply give you agency to story-based games. I say that as someone who'll spend hours at a coffee shop reading.

The 30 pounds shit, though, you can fix without giving up your hobby!

I actually read a lot during lockdown. I got in to the old RA Salvatore Drizz't series last winter, and I think I'm on book #12 or 13 right now.
