New Chappelle Netflix Special is... Really Unfunny

Louis CK talked about how much he loved and respected his wife while he was whipping his dick out in front of women, Bill Cosby was America's Dad while he was a serial rapist, Larry the Cable Guy is a blue collar multi millionaire... it's almost like these guys have a schtick that relies on the appearance of being genuine while not actually being genuine at all.

Chappelle’s Show was groundbreaking back in the day but unfortunately he has nothing new or interesting to say. He’s out of touch. Some of this material seems ripped from posts made by an internet edgelord. The trans material itself itself is particularly hacky.

The main thing differentiating him from an alt-right comic at this point is the color of his skin.

Joke is a stronger word than I would use for his material.

Speak for yourself. Most fans of comedy quite enjoyed it.

If you watched it to be triggered, then that’s on you. You know exactly what you’re getting with Dave Chappelle (and most famous comedians). I realize you are having a hard time and are in a rough situation right now, so I’m not trying to invalidate how you feel. But comedy should not have limits. He’s doing bits, nothing more.

I never said I was triggered or offended. I never said his material was innaproriate. Honestly I felt like his LGBT bit was a clever premise in theory but not particularly insightful or accurate since he lacks the personal experience to really comment on such matters. The trans material didn’t offend me, but it offended my comic sensibilities because it’s the same joke that’s been made ad naseum by conservative comedians. I don’t mind if he jokes about controversial topics, but at least come about it in a clever and insightful way.

It just seems really outdated and out of touch in general.

I'm planning on watching this some time this week, I'll share my thoughts then. I've been a massive Chappelle fan since his pre-Chappelle Show stand-up so I'm curious to see how this one fares.

I actually didn't like his last set of Netflix specials (or is it regarded as one with two episodes?) on my first viewing a lot and found it a bit unfunny. I somehow had the urge to watch it a second time and it clicked with me and its format made way more sense. His story-telling abilities are great.

I saw this criticism too--that trans joke is just the same joke everyone's been making for decades. It's lazy. It's cheap. It isn't funny (because it's lazy and cheap). But I agree--that car ride bit had potential. It just wasn't fully there.

I'm in the same boat as you.  The previous Netflix specials were not real great to me.  This new one however was great.

Dave was pretty obviously poking at the PC culture.  I do think he is somewhat upset at some of his friends that have had their careers ruined (CK), but I think there is a bunch of material here that is not necessarily what he believes - but he is poking the PC crowd intentionally to get a reaction.  He was obviously wildly successful.  I'm sure he is reading threads like this and enjoying all the people he triggered.

I don’t think anyone in this thread is actually triggered. All of the responses here seem very level headed.

Accusing someone of being triggered has become a knee-jerk response for fans of edgy comedy towards anyone who doesn’t find a particular joke funny. “Oh, you didn’t find that funny?! You must be... TRIGGERED!”

Or, you know, maybe comedy is subjective and not everyone is going to find humor in what you find funny.

Well there’s not finding something funny, and there is being offended.

I can can feel that a joke just fell flat, without feeling like the comedian should apologize. People are getting offended and even outraged by some of the jokes are the ones triggered.

I’m halfway through now. It’s weird watching a comedian with a multi-million dollar Netflix deal whine for an hour about how difficult his job has become.

Reminds me when Eminem’s second album had songs of him rapping about how fame has fucked up his life. lol I’m not saying it can’t, but I’m sure all that money could make it easier to adapt to the change.

Dude, you literally said that the only thing keeping him from being alt-right is that he is black.

That statement is both ignorant and racist.  I would say you are triggered plenty.

Oh? So chappele’s allowed to say faggot on stage but I can’t make a joke about how he’s sounding eerily like a conservative comic now?

Yeah, maybe you are the one getting triggered if you took that comment completely seriously. And that isn’t litterally what I said. You’re doing a lot of projecting here, to be honest. I’m honestly not mad at the special. It got a few chuckles out of me but I was expecting more.

Trigger has a specific definition of something that is said or seen that evokes a certain trauma of the past. People with post-traumatic stress disorder, postpartum psychosis, anxiety disorder, etc. have to avoid triggers on a daily basis.

The irony has always been that people who use it incorrectly for 'offended' are often quick to temper and easily offended by the simplest things. And looking through this thread, that continues to be the case! :dancing:

It's OK for people not to like a joke; you're not owed a laugh because you make one.

Wow... How rasist are you? Comedians drop n bombs for years, but 1 gay slur sends you into a tizzy.

I'm genuinely in favor of passing a law that mandates anyone who uses the word "triggered" in a leering way be marched straight into the ocean at gunpoint.

The same motherfuckers that high five each other over how triggered snowflakes are spending millions of dollars on shirts and stickers because a black dude kneeled.

Well it sure is obvious no one in here is triggered by me or by this netflix show.  Not like anyone is digging through past posts to try and find something that resembles dirt on me, or literally calling for the deaths of people that they mildly don't agree with.  (by marching them into the ocean at gunpoint.)  Real reasonable little mob we got here.  Does everyone have their cute Antifa ski masks and finger-less gloves on?

It's incredible Chappelle would lean into an 'anti-PC' angle given why he left his show...

That was my thinking. I mean I remember when he left the show and his reasonings.  Seems he has slid back to what ic comfortable for him. He is funny but the last show was a little uncomfortable.

I hope you’re having a nice day. :sun:

Beautiful day.  I love this time of year when it just starts to cool down a bit and football season finally starts.  Work is a tad busy, but I love my job so I can deal with that.  I honestly hope things are going well for you too.

As long as we aren't calling each other Hitler, or wishing for death or dismemberment for each other - then there is no reason that civil conversations cant be had about topics where there is disagreement.

I honnestly hope you are having a good day too. I wasn’t being sarcastic, I just know sometimes it’s best to bow out of an argument if both parties are very firm in their stance.

Watching his special I didn't come away thinking he was anti-pc... he was anti-overly sensitive people and people who don't get "jokes". Jerry Seinfeld has said the same thing and has said he wouldn't want to do comedy in today's day and age. THAT is what Chappelle was poking fun at... and out of curiosity, why do you guys think he left his show? I know why he left but I'm curious as to what people think he left his show for and how it contradicts what he did in this special?

I’m curios about what you know since you’re presenting yourself as the most educated on this particular topic.

What’s funny to me about the special is that I’ve heard from so many back people that it’s dumb to say “I have a black friend” in order to defend themselves against the charge of being racist. However, multiple times in the special Chappelle asserts that he has he many gay friends before making a gay joke.

I’m not offended by this btw, just found this to be ironic.

I’m curious what skillz thinks but I feel like he’s still pretending I don’t exist because he hates me. :(

From my understanding He left the show not so much for the jokes he was telling but more so on how his jokes where perceived by some that saw it as a re-enforcement of stereotypes  instead of pointing out the flaws and making humorous the situations. I watched the new stand up I just said there where parts that made me uncomfortable where other stand up of his did not. I also look forward to what he does next.
