If you buy an RTX card you get a free copy:

Hopefully that means cheap codes on eBay soon (you'll need an RTX card to redeem it)... or if anyone wants to sell me their code :p

Currently about $40 for RTX codes

I finally beat Death Stranding this week.  I spent 150 hours on this game.  It's been a long time since I sunk that much time into a game.  I ended up playing on PS4 since I found a copy at my local library.  Unfortunately, I hadn't updated my ps4 in a while and was playing offline.  I didn't know that other player could contribute materials, which meant that I made the majority of the roads by myself.  Fortunately, I found out around the distribution center before mountain knot city.

It was a interesting story, with one really long ending.  I really had a lot of fun using the zip lines in the mountains.  I needed only the veteran porter and first prepper to complete the central area and 2 others in the eastern region, but I'd had enough.

I stand by $30 max :santasun:

Codes were at $45-ish at launch, dropped to $40 2-3 days later, $35-ish by the following week, now they’re starting to show up for $30 occasionally. Was going to keep waiting but found one for “$30 or best offer”, offered $25, accepted.

How "japanese" wierd is the story in this game? I've sort of been following it, but sort of not and none of the reviews I've watched/read really touch on the stories for spoiler reasons. I'm like 1/2 interested and 1/2 not.

I haven't played it, but perhaps this will help?

Thanks. Having read that I would say it is typical "japanese" weird which just isn't my cup of tea.

I read a positive Steam review that described this game as Euro Truck Simulator directed by Japanese David Lynch. That's probably pretty spot on despite not having played Euro Truck Simulator. I personally love how fucking weird all of it is.

It’s an MGS-style story but without Kojima being reigned in by Konami. So crazier than crazy should allow.

The story was weird but interesting.  You're post apocalyptic delivery man who has to contend with terrorists, invisible monsters, and the elements.

I honestly just find the whole game so damn endearing and playful. It's so unfiltered and creative, I really appreciate that about it. Every facet of it reflects that and it kind of even makes the aspects that are flawed or don't work interesting and cool sometimes. It reminds me of Demon's Souls in that way.

You should probably play ETS (or ATS if you love 'Merica!)

Do you actually control a person making deliveries or is it solely about the driving part kind of like a racing sim but well, obviously the minutiae of a truck? Never looked into these kind of games actually but it sounds...kind of fun?

Edit: Holy shit the Steam reviews are shockingly good. "Strangely cathartic" and "breathtaking landscapes"...yup, that's Death Stranding alright.

You don't control a person, only the truck but to make deliveries (and pick them up) you do have to back up into the delivery spot. You can do this automatically but you will get less XP. If you do it manually you get more XP to level up your driver and I think ATS is the only one that has the options to make the delivery more complicated. Once you get enough money you can buy trucks and hire drivers to drive the trucks as well.

I've said before but compared to other sims (like Farming Simulator) the game is fun. Something like Farming Simulator feels too much like work. ETS or ATS is a pretty laid back game you drive across Europe making deliveries, it's like the enjoyment of a racing game sort of but with less pressure. You can play it while you watch something on TV or listen to a podcast or you can listen to the game's in game radio which queues up real radio stations (My favorite it Hamburg Rock & Pop)

Here's Alex from Giant Bomb, he's got a regular show where he's playing the game, it will give you a good idea of the game.

I'll say that he's doing like a quick job, which automatically sets you in a truck and you just have to drive to the destination.

Once you buy your own truck you can drive  freely to any delivery place you want and then make the delivery from there.

  • 2 weeks later...

After I beat Ghost of Tsushima most likely today...I'm moving toward playing Death Standing.

I initially bought it at launch but played only a few hours while drinking too much beer.

I'd like to restart this game sober and see if I can actually understand and enjoy it. Any of you guys play and beat it?

I had just written a long ass post in your original thread and it vanished when I hit reply and the thread was no longer available...so there goes that. I feel like I'm D1P's resident Death Stranding proponent at this point so yeah.

DS is more like one of those experimental PS2-era Japanese games than the AAA blockbuster it had been marketed as, think of it in that light if that makes sense. I love how utterly different it feels to play from basically anything else I've ever played but then again apparently 'Pacifist MGSV for neat freaks who like apocalyptic hiking and road building' was something I was missing from my life?

Do yourself a favor and in the options menu, select 'First Time Only' for 'BT Encounter Warning'. This was patched in later thankfully but originally this infuriating mini-cutscene played every single time you entered these particular enemy areas, you'll understand once you start playing. Selecting First Time Only disables this nonsense and I think it greatly enhances the flow.

Also if you want any tips or have questions, feel free to tag me, I clearly like talking about this game...

Very cool. I appreciate it! I'll probably ask for some tips.

I really enjoyed it and it was my yearly "game that got me back into playing games, game". I couldn't tell you why I enjoyed it though, as breaking each component down...it's doesn't make for an amazing experience, but for whatever reason I did. (I blame Covid and the message behind the game creating a perfect storm).
