~*Official Prime Minister Liz Truss Thread of Anglo-Saxon Embarrassment*~

British politics > American politics

I think these are the moving parts:

-Parliament is voting tomorrow on a bill to block No Deal, BoJo is pulling out all the stops to get Tory MPs to vote against the bill, including threats to kick them out of the party.

--BoJo could stack the House of Lords to delay the bill there.

-If BoJo loses the vote tomorrow (likely), he's going to call a General Election.

-BoJo can't call a General Election unless Labour agrees.

-If Labour agrees to a General Election, BoJo could arbitrarily move the election to after Brexit but would lose the rationale for the election.

-Labour could call a Vote of No Confidence to force not only force a General Election but use the 14 day cool off period to form a Caretaker Government under Corbyn to delay Brexit until after the election.

More fuckery options:

Rebel Alliance (yes, that's what the media is calling them) leadership is meeting with Labour to discuss strategy ahead of the vote. BoJo's leak about calling a General Election is meant to scare Rebel Tory's into voting against the bill or be responsible for Prime Minister Corbyn. If the bill still passes and BoJo calls the election, Labour might not go along because BoJo has already demonstrated a willingness to mess with convention and could delay the election until after Brexit. If BoJo can't call an election with Labour's consent, he could Vote of No Confidence himself and trigger the election that way and installing himself as Caretaker PM.

BoJo has significantly more cards to play than Corbyn and the Rebels, No Deal is going to happen.

Can't the queen refuse an election and choose to install someone else as PM? I remember in history class the governor general of Canada did that once, it was called the King Bing affair as I recall.

Theoretically if the opposition can show the Queen that they have the confidence of the house, then they can form government without a new election. That would assume that the Queen (and all monarchy) aren't rabid Conservatives. She might have done such a thing for Tony Blair...but not for Corbyn.

If there is a new election, I fully expect Johnson to get an even stronger mandate due to vote splitting. Conservatives + Brexit Party will get 50% or more of the seats for sure.
