The modern emulation stuff where you can see the entire map at once for the 2D games seems like it'd help a lot, the going fast part always felt at odds with your extremely limited FOV. It made for a unique experience unlike most other platformers at the time or even since. Sonic's only real crime is its contribution to the world of furries through the comic series.
