Wow, those post WWI colonial arbitrary lines on the map are having the intended effect, go figure!

I need to look at how many troops we had left before Biden pulled the trigger, but I'm pretty sure we could afford a small presence there for a while longer. It seems like it would have been more reasonable to do an unannounced phased withdrawal with certain benchmarks to prevent things from going this far south. At least evacuate every single person that helped us there as we could before moving so fast. We made no tangible gains over the last couple of decades, but Biden fucked up managing this thing.

Maybe not the WWI bit but it's still a fake country designed by colonialists to encourage internal conflict, isn't it?

The UK never took Afghanistan. A few wars when they weren't being friendly but never annexed the area. They wanted to keep it as a buffer to Russia.

As a @Zaku3 mentioned, Afghanistan is a special case where no colonial authority drew arbitrary lines.  Afghanistan just kinda "appeared" from the leftovers of various Persian empires.

I cannot adequately express the extent to which it enrages me that we can spam drone strikes o’er the world based on the most dubious and tenuous justifications, but when it comes to getting our allies out of harm’s way it’s all about the process and paperwork. It’s fucking disgusting. We’ve been at this for fucking decades, get them on a fucking plane and sort this shit out when they get here.

Well, if one of the MAGA infested immigration agencies is involved, it's not exactly a mystery what the holdup is.

This has been a problem for a long fucking time, I genuinely don’t think it has all that much to do with Trumpism as it does with us just not giving a shit generally.

Canada plans to resettle more than 20,000 vulnerable Afghans including women leaders, human rights workers and reporters to protect them from Taliban reprisals, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said on Friday.

Rumours that Canadian special forces are already in Afghanistan to help get translators and other embassy-related staff out. Sounds like many of these 20,000 other refugees have already escaped to neighbouring countries and will be spirited to Canada. Not sure how they plan to get the rest out. I have heard that Canadian special forces are pretty great...but only so much you can do against an entire military, regardless of any training or tech differences.

EDIT -

Quote

Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan said some Canadian special forces were in Afghanistan taking part in the relocation effort but gave no details.

"The challenges on the ground are quite immense," he said.

Canada's new plan would focus on those who are particularly vulnerable, including women leaders, human rights defenders, reporters, persecuted religious minorities and members of the gay and lesbian community, Mendicino said.
