Россия invades Україна | UPDATE (30 May 2024) - Biden gives Ukraine permission to strike some targets inside Russia with American weapons

The latest from the Russian ‘truth-tellers’.

Ritter’s view of the war has been decisively opposed to the version pumped out by the press: Russia is winning and will win decisively. He’s been overly bullish on the timetable, but has given detailed accounts of how Russia has engaged in classic “maneuver warfare” to shape the battlefield and dictate the nature and timing of the engagement. He’s also stressed that media employees and supposed military experts who’ve never seen a day of combat keep projecting US methods onto Russia and thus completely misconstruing what is going on. Russia has not gone the US route of taking out electricity, cell towers, the Internet, and railroads at the onset. Nor has it bombed cities into rubble, which it could easily have done. It has instead gone easy on civilians, taken more military losses, and has prosecuted the war in a more step-by-step, grinding manner, slowly but systematically destroying Ukraine’s ability to wage war while avoiding its cities as much as possible. Russia follows Clausewitz, and Clausewitz argued the fastest path to victory was destroying armies, not cities.

and…

That all was well enough tolerated for a while. But then Ritter tweeted on Bucha, and Twitter being Twitter, he was limited to his bottom line:

The Ukrainian National Police committed numerous crimes against humanity in Bucha. Biden, in seeking to shift blame for the Bucha murders onto Russia, is guilty of aiding and abetting these crimes. Congratulations America… we’ve created yet another Presidential war criminal!”

As Ritter explained in his current Consortium News piece, he had support for that provocative statement. We’ll take the liberty of quoting at length, on the assumption that he wants others to see his work:

I had just finished an article for Russia Today (RT)on the Bucha incident…

The available data coming out of Bucha was ultimately inconclusive but, if anything, strongly suggested Ukrainian culpability, not Russian….

Russian claims of a mass Ukrainian surrender in Mariupol are likely false, but Russian forces forced Ukrainian troops to abandon the Ilyich metal plant in northern Mariupol on April 13, further constricting the two remaining pockets of Ukrainian defenders. Russian forces will likely capture Mariupol in the coming week. Russian forces continued to conduct small-scale limited offensive operations on both the Izyum and Severodonetsk axes and have not yet begun a broader offensive campaign.

Key Takeaways

  • Russian forces continued to take ground in Mariupol, but Russian claims of a mass Ukrainian surrender are likely false.
  • Russian forces continued unsuccessful local attacks in eastern Ukraine amid continuing preparations for a likely wider offensive.
  • Russian forces continued to regroup in Kharkiv Oblast for offensive operations and conducted only minor attacks south of Izyum.

One of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest allies warned NATO on Thursday that if Sweden and Finland joined the U.S.-led military alliance then Russia would have to bolster its defences in the region, including by deploying nuclear weapons.

    Yeah, sure - why not?

Actually this is a good comparison. Russia is performing about as bad as the winter war and early Barb.

Deploying meaning just “pointing them at these countries “?

The Moskva seems to be still on fire:

Also, Russian ships in the Black Sea that were near the Moskva are moving further south away from shore:

Clearly the danger of accidentally igniting your own munitions is lessened the further you move from the coast, everyone knows this.

Well, if you need to put out a fire you probably want to go further out to sea where the water is more wet.

So does that make the Moskva the largest ship sunk by enemy action since WWII? The Belgrano was sunk in the Falklands War, but I think it was slightly smaller (~12,300 tons vs ~12,500 tons).

Yes it does. Also she is probably irreplacable. Both in theatre due to the Bosporous being closed to military traffic and most of the USSR's ship building was done in Ukraine.

Correction: Russia has built the Borei class sub so if you can build a nuclear sub you should be able to build a crusier. Dockyard size allowing. But still major blow since a ship is far more valuable and time consuming to produce then a tank or aircraft.

The Moskva can be replaced in capability with frigate-sized warships that Russia has been producing. If they want to devote resources to it, they can commission 2 of them and probably get 10x the capability Moskva offered.

I'm not too familiar with modern naval warfare. (Only encountered it in Wargame Red Dragon) A modern frigate is basically a large WW2 DD? With modern DDs being like I guess CLs used to be?

Also oo snap Trumpeter makes a 1/350, scale Moskva. This reminds me another negative of the war I imagine Zveda (sp?) kits will be difficult to fine. I like the T-34 85 I got from them. Guess there is always chinese ebay seller. (Ugh)

I can't equate it to WW2 ships. I'm uneducated on that front.

    This, basically.

It has anti-air capabilities that are better than the Moskva (though fewer missiles). It has more versatile land attack missiles/anti-ship missiles. The Moskva did not have a land attack capability. It's supposedly harder to acquire on radar, and has a better self-defense suite than the Moskva. And it requires half the crew.
