Da 5 Bloods - A Spike Lee Joint set in Vietnam on Netlfix June 12

Recommended Posts

Spike seems like he'd be making stuff no matter what, but he sure seems to have made the new streaming economy work for him. Oldboy bombs, he makes Sweet Blood of Jesus for nothing, Amazon buys Chi-Raq, he goes back to the studios and wins an Oscar for Klansman, and now he's made a TV show and a movie for Netflix.

The way this trailer plays out I wouldn't be surprised to find out this movie is a bit more conventional or far more psychedelic than the trailer seems. Either way, in a summer movie season starved for new releases, a new Spike Lee joint dropping on Netflix sounds good to me.

I've only ever seen Do The Right Thing several times and that garbage Oldboy remake because it was on cable. Which ones of Lee's movies are must-watch flicks? I really should see more considering I always really liked Do The Right Thing.

He is sort of a blind spot for me too. Inside Man is a kinda standard Hollywood thriller, a departure from his usual thing, but really good.

He was on a roll in the 90's. Been pretty bad ever since.  His good to great films in my  opinion are

Do The Right Thing

Malcolm X

Jungle Fever

Mo Betta Blues

He Got Game

25th Hour

Inside Man

Bamboozled (which is criminally underrated and ahead of its time)

Black Klansman

Plus he did two really good documentaries

4 Little Girls

When The Levees Broke

Girl 6 and Summer of Sam aren't necessarily good but worth checking out. Everything else is pretty awful to be honest.

Like a lot of black filmmakers my age, Spike was a major inspiration along with John Singleton, Robert Townsend, Keenan Ivory Wayans, the Hudlin Brothers, The Hughes Brothers, Bill Duke,  The Van Peebles and Ernest Dickerson. These guys WERE Black film in the 90's and opened the doors for everyone else.

I mean...it has Denzel.

:badass:

pretty much anything he did with Denzel is worth watching. Also go back and watch his old movies and see how many actors got their big breaks in Spike Lee movies.

Sam Jackson

Wesley Snipes

Hallie Berry

John Tuturro

Michael Imperiolli

And a bunch if other actors mostly ethnic New Yorkers.

I haven't been as big on Spike in recent years because most of his films prior to Black Klansman have been terrible. But I'm looking forward to this.

Correction by the way, I have seen Jungle Fever and really liked it back then. The others I have to catch up on. And I'm also a fan of John Singleton, at least the movies I've seen. Wayans' stuff we watched incessantly back then too. Van Peebles I mainly remember for New Jack City...which I mostly remember for Rock's totally insane crackhead performances. I love the crazy lighting and shit whenever he starts jonesing

Van Peebles definitely made more Hollywood type movies but his father was a pioneer (and was also a mentor of mine briefly after I got out of school)

Outside of New Jack City, he made Posse and Solo.  Posse was OK and is a personal fav of mine. Solo was terrible.

Back on topic, I don't know how good this movie will be but that trailer is awesome.

The only ones really worth watching (these are all good to great), in my opinion:

-Do the Right Thing

-Malcolm X

-Crooklyn

-Clockers

-He Got Game

-25th Hour

-Inside Man

-BlacKkKlansman

You can more or less ignore the rest of his films, though there are some interesting misfires/failures in there too if you want more Spike Lee (She's Gotta Have It, Mo' Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Get on the Bus, and Chi-Raq). But these are the must watches, I think.

I KNEW I forgot one or two of his mid 90's movies. I REALLY liked Crooklyn. Clockers was o.k.

Reno & Lindo I haven't seen in anything in a hot minute, so that alone is well worth watching. Boseman's weight loss makes a lot more sense now and he's a solid actor so that's cool, plus I'm always a sucker for a 'Nam related flick!

As for Spike, its really hate it/love it for me. Inside Man, 25th Hour, Girl 6, Crooklyn, Malcolm X are all gems and classics for sure but many other works of his just don't speak to me all that much. I wish I enjoyed Black KKKlansman more, it was decent but not worthy of Best Director that year when he has made better work.

Anyone else see this yet? Not that there's a ton of competition, but this seems like it's easily the best movie of the year so far. I'll admit I don't really know Delroy Lindo that well, but he really blew me away here. And between this and The Last Man in San Francisco, I'm ready for Jonathan Majors to be in everything.

IMHO he is totally awesome in anything he's in. By all means seek out the following:

  • The Chicago Code (FOX TV series, unfortunately only 1 season but probably the closest thing to The Wire I have seen on network television)
  • Gone in 60 Seconds
  • Romeo Must DIe
  • The Devil's Advocate (smaller role but still solid and the movie as a whole is tremendous)
  • First Time Felon
  • Get Shorty

When I first saw he was cast in this, I was like "OH WOW NO WAY! Where has he been!?" so yeah, the fact that his role in this film is what I have heard a lot of praise for makes me happy to hear as well as eager to watch!

How about something good like Crooklyn?

Delroy Lindo is amazing in everything he’s in. He really needs to Star in a movie along side Keith David.

Watched the movie over the weekend. It’s really good. Lindo is phenomenal. If I had any criticism it’s that it’s a little bloated—you could easily trim 30 minutes from the movie and not much would be lost.

Also,

Spoiler

The French bomb group just seems to be randomly thrown into the movie and they appear out of nowhere.

I watched this over the weekend and enjoyed it well enough, but I don't think it's necessarily among his best. He leans very heavily on the Vietnam films that have come before here, to an almost conspicuous degree, but I guess Spike hasn't exactly been known for his subtlety.

Dayonepatch should fund a movie and make have the two star as leads.

@Emperor Diocletian II can fund it and @skillzdadirecta can direct it and who's a writer around here?? @Greatoneshere ?

And obviously we can debut it at @sblfilms theater.

I can do the soundtrack, I'm like an ex half-assed musician and still mix albums on the side, fuck yeah.

And by the way, the clash of tastes and styles in this would be amazing.

I do indeed write on the side, have most of my life, though have never turned it professional. Who knows?! :p
