I don't even get what that's a response to.  Did he watch Star Trek, see a cashless society and get cold chills?

Pretty sure he's using the badness of nazis to emphasize how bad he thinks building AI will be, because he thinks the latter will destroy all mankind (thus getting rid of all future value or "utils" from mankind), whereas in the former you still have people alive -- they "just" cause severe suffering across the world.

EDIT: Yes, my above interpretation is correct. Here is the thread it's from:

"Paperclipped" is referring to an idea from the AI doomer cult that if you build an AI to make paperclips it will wipe out all of humanity to turn them into paperclips.

The body only contains 3-4 grams of iron.  So, at best, an ASI will only be able to make 4 paperclips out of every person.  Pretty inefficient.

when it comes to mostly unserious matters i vote always for the funniest thing to happen and openai self immolation coupled with satya raiding the cupboard is just about the funniest outcome

It's almost there. I think it would have been more fun if Altman had left to form a new company that could compete with Open-AI. Having him in house at Microsoft when Open AI is already MS's defatcto AI house is a bit sad. At the end of the day all this adds up to putting MS in a better overall position.

Round and round we go...

Altman’s move to Microsoft isn’t a done deal, and Ilya Sutskever’s flip to supporting Altman means two board members need to change their minds.

Sam Altman’s surprise move to Microsoft after his shock firing at OpenAI isn’t a done deal. He and co-founder Greg Brockman are still open to returning to OpenAI if the remaining board members who fired him step aside, multiple sources tell The Verge.

The promised mass exodus of virtually every OpenAI employee, including board member and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever who led the move to depose Altman, means that there is more push to remove the board than ever, and only two of three remaining board members need to flip to make it happen. Altman just posted on X that “we are all going to work together some way or other,” which we are told is meant to indicate that the fight continues.

MSFT getting in on the poachin':

Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott offered to match the compensation of OpenAI employees considering a departure from the company.

Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott on Tuesday offered to match compensation for the hundreds of employees at OpenAI who are threatening to resign following Sam Altman’s sudden ouster as CEO.

“To my partners at OpenAI: We have seen your petition and appreciate your desire potentially to join Sam Altman at Microsoft’s new AI Research Lab,” Scott said Tuesday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Know that if needed, you have a role at Microsoft that matches your compensation and advances our collective mission.”

It is not immediately known if the offer is contingent on Altman’s employment at Microsoft. Scott did not respond to CNBC’s request for comment on X. But, the comment gives some clarity to what Microsoft is willing to pay employees and how many it would hire.

The future of OpenAI is still uncertain and it remains unclear where Altman will work.

OpenAI’s board of directors approached Dario Amodei, the co-founder and CEO of rival large-language model developer Anthropic, about a potential merger of the two companies, said a person with direct knowledge. The approach came after OpenAI’s board had fired CEO Sam Altman on Friday and was part of an effort by OpenAI to persuade Amodei to replace Altman as CEO, the person said.

It’s not clear whether the merger proposal led to any serious discussion. Amodei quickly turned down the CEO offer due to his position at Anthropic. The 2-year-old startup, which sells Claude, a chatbot that competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is in fierce competition with OpenAI to recruit researchers and win customers.

At this point it feels almost certain that the board are just a bunch of absolute idiots. Either they had a good enough reason to fire him, which they can share with concerned parties (MS, Open AI employees, interim CEOs), or they didn't. If they didn't have a great reason for firing him, then it's just a matter of how much damage they do the company before they exit themselves.

Right now I don't think any permanent damage has been done, but they're certainly at the precipice.

A reminder: the board of Open AI isn't a usual corporation's board. They are a relic from The "non-profit" era and deliberately do not have the same fiduciary duties as a regular board. If they think it's in the best interest of "humanity" to tank the company, they can, and that's exactly where we are :p

Was this "convert from non-profit to "capped" for profit" ever a good idea? Of course not. Most everyone involved in the higher up workings of Open AI are practically out of an episode from Silicon Valley.
