Absolutely reckless for Diane Feinstein to not have resigned by now. Non-trivial chance a Republican governor is gonna pick her replacement.

Apparently Newsom could avert the recall by just stepping down.

I might be worried if Republicans had a strong candidate. Right now they have no one.

Their candidates are bad, but I don't think there's a single other Democrat running, so to encourage Democrats not to vote yes on the recall to get somebody they think is better. All you need is 50% for the recall and any one of the ordinarily bad candidates can be your next governor.

Gavin Newsom will not have a (D) next to his name on the recall ballot.

He's not gonna be on the same ballot as the Republicans AFAIK.

It's the same ballot, just not the same question. It's a two part ballot. The first is whether you want to recall Newsom. The second question is who should replace him, and he doesn't appear on the second question. But that part only matters if enough people vote that he should be replaced. Which is more likely since he fucked up and didn't get his party registration on the ballot.

Do you think most people coming to vote in a September election don't know his party?

And as mentioned a plurality wins on the second question. Even if it's something stupid like a 15%. So a bunch of Republicans splitting the vote doesn't really matter because no name recognition Democrats filed to be on the replacement list.

And as also mentioned this could all be mooted if Newsom just stepped down.
