Psshh that's what they said about Returnal too.

Well, I'm watching Max play it and he breezed through Returnal.

The big difference between this and Returnal is Returnal was designed to be what it is. Resident Evil is just Resident Evil from the first person perspective trying to be Doom but with the mechanics of RE jank

EDIT: Looks like it was more of an issue with the game not triggering the cutscene at the beginning or something, otherwise he spent like nearly an hour and a half with that first encounter.

Ok, good. I'd like to play the game on the normal difficulty setting to give me a little challenge.

My beef with the demo was the increased enemy agility yet still being stuck in a possibly even more sluggish feeling movement style than RE2R. The enemies are bullet sponges in RE2R as well but they're also way slower and less jittery. The amount of quick movement from enemies combined with the 'Is Ethan on painkillers?' first person feel and the crappy starter guns left the sour taste in my mouth. I actually just downloaded it again yesterday to play the Castle section and the combat was even more frustrating than the Village portion.

Yep and that's my issue as well. RE7 was slower and less combat focused. RE8 the enemies became more agile but Ethan still moves like a slug, and there is A LOT of combat in this game.

After playing it a few times, I noticed that sprinting speed cancels when you step sideways and that that's what's been bugging the shit out of me. Also the backwards movement is absurdly slow. Basically I spent most of the demo whiffing half my shots minimum because their fucking heads never stop bobbling all over the place. They even threw in the RE4 enemy sidestep move only that it's further and more frequent here.

Yeah I think something is supposed to trigger. Just try to last long enough for it to happen and the rest of the game isn't nearly as hard as that part. :p

I figured it was something like that since this is basically the same as the opening confrontation in RE4… I just can’t survive long enough. Maybe I’ll just try running around like a Benny Hill routine, or maybe there are more splodey barrels that I can abuse that I haven’t noticed yet.

For those at the first encounter in the village:

Spoiler

Are you ending up on the roof?  It took me a bit to realize how you can move through multiple houses and continue to barricade them, and I ultimately ended up on a roof.  When I was overwhelmed, a cutscene triggered and ended the sequence.  It was really tense, it sort of played out like movie where I didn't realize the first ladder, then scrambled underground, then to another house.  It felt desperate and improvisational, but also pretty clearly was the intended route.

Regarding the combat, it feels very similar to RE4 to me.  In both games, movement is super limited.  If anything, you are much more mobile in Village, but it's the same sort of shooting gallery, encroaching enemies affair and I've found it really fun and much better than 7 so far.

How's the upgrade system so far? I figure the guns must turn cool with enough upgrades at some point, yeah?

I think it's random and happens at completely different locations. Chat was saying "it happened to me here" and when it happened to Max he was in a different place than you describe and they described. He was completely surprised. :p

I think you got it wrong here. There's a lot more you can do in RE4 than you can in this game in regard to  combat. Leon can suplex guys, kick em, you can kick down laders etc. The combat is as crazy as he is.

In this game you are not mobile at all and the only thing you can really do is the signature put your hands up and block. It's only RE4 in terms of a village setting but the gameplay is very RE7.

Turn cool how? I've only seen 3 of the weapons so far, I guess I'll tag this but it's not anything huge I suppose

Spoiler

You basically buy stat upgrades from the shop guy. There are attachments that also improve the gun and make it look slightly different but nothing I would say, "Super cool"

Besides struggling on hardcore what are your thoughts overall? I know you're early but I value your opinion.

@Keyser_Soze Overall, you enjoying it? What are you playing it on?

I would assume so, but I only played about an hour last night and quit after the first real encounter.  I will play more tonight and let you know.

Good point about the combat options, but doesn't the game have a counter-punch/kick?  I thought I read that somewhere but I'm very early on and haven't seen anything besides the block (which doesn't seem to do anything, but maybe I'm timing it wrong).  That first encounter felt really similar to the village encounter in RE4, except this time I could move backwards!  The first encounter in RE4 is one of my most memorable gaming experiences, so I might just be excited to have that similar feeling but I really enjoyed what I've played of Village so far, combat and all.

The first 45 minutes are a nice combo of RE4 and RE7, if that persists throughout the rest of the game I’m good.

I don’t love that…

Spoiler

Mia gets fridged immediately but who knows how that’ll go.

As I mentioned a couple of times I'm not playing it. I'm watching someone play it.

I'll say from the moment I saw the previews of this game the combat never looked like a highlight to me. So in the final product it still doesn't look great to me.

The rest of the game, however, I think is pretty cool so far. The castle part, which feels more like traditional RE is pretty cool. I'll probably refrain from saying too much further since I think he got further than anyone else ITT.

The dialogue seems kind of dumb, at least the things Ethan says.

I'm interested in seeing where this game will go next.

Yeah, there is a counter after blocking. I think it's L1 (there's a prompt) to kick the enemy away from you which kind of stuns them for a second and creates space. I did it a few times in the dungeon. I was too pressed for time to really try out if there's a sort of parry aspect to blocking or how much damage it absorbs vs. a clean hit and all.

You’ll have to turn some stuff down from max for 4k/60 or do 1800p/60 or 1440p/60 worst case, either way you’ll be able to have it running/looking better than either next gen console with a 2080ti.

I've been playing most games at 1440p / 120 max setting and getting great performance though the 2080ti. I will give 4k / 60 a try but anything could happen. Cyber punk ran just wonderfully with some ray tracing options on @1440p / 60, most maxed setting by a recommended set up on YouTube and that's where I left it and finished it. we shall see tonight. I'll be finishing up Dishonored 2 this afternoon, the RE* tonight, it's downloading now and wow it's under 30gigs! That seemed weird, in these days where large games get multiple patches that big, so cool I guess. I hope it's a 20 hour game. I'll be starting on the harder difficulty just one up from normal, and I tend you try and find everything there is so maybe a kind of long 4 days 5 hours each late at night with lights off and 7.1 headphones!!! Can't WAIT!

Ok, I must have missed where you said you weren't playing it. I hope to at least tolerate the combat and enjoy the atmosphere and story. The reviews are good but that doesn't seem to mean much these days. I won't be playing this for a little while. Like I said, I have to beat Valhalla and then I'm going on vacation next week. Thanks for the impressions.

Playing on Series S with RT turned off and so far it's been pretty solid.

About three hours in and have been running all over the castle. I've been a fan of RE since the beginning, and I'm really loving the game. Is it classic RE? Not really. But Capcom's willingness to mix it up is what's kept this series alive for 25+ years.

The attention to detail in the game is pretty impressive. I don't know if they'll be able to keep it up for the entirety of the game but so far the castle has been pretty incredible. I'm a sucker for secret passages and hidden rooms (which is a big reason I've been an RE fan all this time) and the castle has not disappointed.

Combat is still kinda janky, but I'm getting a feel for it. I do kinda feel like if it handled better, the game wouldn't be as tense. All of us FPS veterans expect it to handle like a FPS, but I'm kinda glad it doesn't.

I've been playing on Normal, and the game does seem a bit on the easy side (so far).

Spoiler

3 sisters down now and only the big bitch to worry about.

So I haven’t played anymore, still not past the first real encounter.

BUUUUUUUUT the opening minutes of this…

Spoilery speculation based on RE7 stuff…

Spoiler

Have me feeling that the “Ethan is molded” stuff from RE7 is more or less true. Wondering if they lean into that later on.

I thought both Ethan and Mia were molded?  Maybe I missed something, it's been years since I played 7.

Been a while since I played 7, I thought it was just strongly implied for Ethan, not confirmed.

Spoiler

Ethan is pretty much the Bruce Campbell of the RE universe. In the first four hours he's been stabbed, dismembered, chewed on, impaled, thrown, etc. Yet he just gets right back up again and is like, "eh whatevs. Oh, my hand got chopped off, i'll just glue it back on." There's definitely something going on there.

Fuck. I think I might bite and play this when I get home from work. I usually like to complete the game I'm currently playing then move on to a new game. It reduces backlog, too. But Valhalla is so massive and a very easy game to come back to so I think I'm going to start up RE8 tonight!

Valhalla has become the game I play in between other games.

Yea because the story is extremely simple and the characters are very memorable. So it's easy to take big breaks from it and then get right back into the groove. I'm officially going to start up RE8. In a half hour it will be a 12 hour day for me so I'm feeling tired. So if I get home and don't feel like gaming I'll start tomorrow.
