Porn sites block access to shit hole that dreams of theocracy.

Pornhub disabled website access to Texas users due to the state's age-verification law that aims to protect minors from sexual material.

Not the first state porn sites have blocked due to legislation. Part of me thinks this is just giving these fucks what they want, by essentially shutting down operation in the state.

This is complicated one for me, yes free speech but porn consumption is obviously a societal negative and exploitation is very prevalent on these sites too.

I struggle to think of an industry that isnt built on exploitation. It’s surely can be more predatory and physically harmful in the porn industry. Which seems more like it needs legislative protections for its workers, not slowly trying to legislate the industry out of existence.

I think of Pornhub more of a positive and possibly less exploitative than the "porn industry" because this and something like onlyfans, you can have people doing their own thing, doing what they want, without being exploited by someone. That's not to say there aren't people that that's happening to but I think those type of sites are conceptually more safe than going to a big porn shoot and signing contracts, being harassed by people, etc.

I’m in favor of heavier regulation especially due to the very real societal harm involved not it’s destruction.

It’s an equivalent concept as alcohol to me. Most people can consume it with no issues, some can’t. Porn addiction is a thing and can absolutely impact real world relationships, especially in developing minds etc.

Also no clue incels rage on this. Seems kinda counterproductive to me personally, but who cares what those losers have to say on this topic.

Let's assume we want to age restrict porn access. I don't think having the porn sites manage the verification is the right mechanism. Instead, sites should be required to sign their server with an age requirement which is simple to implement. Then web browsers provide verification. Ideally, there should be a common protocol for that used by all web browsers with open source implementations for it. I would suggest using a government issued pass-key like system with a government hosted database of valid public keys (but no identity), but I'd have to think about the details.

This lowers the barriers for websites and, puts the burden on the government for regulating the keys, and makes it easy for all browsers to set up so that you get very easy and immediate broad protection across all sites.

Sounds like something for parents to worry about, not the government.

Woah there. Parents don't have time to do something like that. With all the time they spend ignoring everything else in their children's life in order to safeguard how other people rise their children.

We have it in NC (big surprise right?)

It is literally legislation with minimal teeth. Foreign based websites literally don't give a fuck and give you open access regardless of where you live. This only hurts the US porn industry. People will just meander to other options.

Indiana has a bill where people will be able to sue sites that don't implement the identification measures. Not exactly sure how they will sue foreign sites like XVideos that is regulated by EU law.

The republican view of the internet continues to remain myopic.
