How the retail lobby sold a $45-billion lie about organized shoplifting

Recommended Posts

Politicians and the press bought into the panic over organized shoplifting, but the source of the alarming statistic now admits that it was a lie.

Quote

Specifically, the NRF declared that organized crime accounted for "nearly half" of the $94.5 billion in retail "shrink" attributed to theft or "other causes" in 2021. The claim appeared in the latest edition of the federation's annual report on organized retail crime.

On Dec. 4, the federation acknowledged that its estimate was a fabrication and it "updated" its report to remove the estimate.

Not surprised at all.

I never even saw the point in the whole discussion, what was the end game?  Did republicans want to give Walgreens managers the right to gun down shoplifters?  Was it simply so politicians could bitch about liberal run cities… while ignoring the high crime small towns that still lock up the soap.

Also for the record if I have to get an employee to unlock a cabinet so I can get deodorant, I shop somewhere else.

Off topic, and at the risk of annoying you with unsolicited advice: I'd suggest you avoid using the term "flyover state" going forward; it's not a good look for you or indeed anybody, IMO, and I think your point stands just as well without it.

I think most republicans imagine living in a big scary city to be something like living in Escape from New York or something. They spend so much time making everyone terrified about big city living.

It's kind of funny how right wingers are allowed to just trash blue states and big cities endlessly with a non stop barrage of slander, hyperbolic fear porn and straight up hate... but if whenever anyone prominent on the left says something slightly disparaging about small towns or red states they lose their fucking minds.

It's also funny hearing Fox News propagandists (and Trump) doing it because every last one of those vile lying grifters lives in Manhattan. These guys wouldn't last 10 minutes in small town America. They are so full of shit.

A recent independent CNBC found the same:

Target blamed theft and violence when it closed 9 stores in New York, Seattle, San Francisco and Portland, but crime is worse at locations it kept open nearby.

The NYC one was just in a shit location for NYC, very bad transit connectivity. They're opening a new one nearby that has much better transit connectivity.

I suspect a significant part of the reason these companies say this shit is there's inevitably going to be people pissed off you closed "their" Target/Walgreens/whatever, and blaming the store closure on theft is basically shorthand for "nothing we can do, we had to close the store" to preemptively mollify those people.

I worked retail once (and only once) in my life when I worked for Abercrombie/Hollister (they were the same company at the time, I don't know if they still are)

They literally have monthly theft budgets I believe at Hollister when I worked there it was something like 11% of their inventory by value was assumed to be stolen at any given time, and that was just a cost they factored into their business. And they even knew that the overwhelming majority of people stealing product were employees, not shoplifters. They're not that stupid.
