It costs $286,000 to raise a kid to age 17 in 2022.

Hmmm, I dunno. That's $17,000 per year? That number seems high to me. I know for sure that we don't spend that much... unless you want to get cute and charge them for 1/2 the mortgage or something.

It was definitely close to that when they were in daycare. But these days? I don't know, but I know we aren't spending 17k per kid. Maybe we're cheap asses, I don't know.

It's very possible to spend much much less than that.

maybe it’s an average and takes into account that in many areas of the country private school is very common. It may also factor in things like sports and hobbies.

I wonder what the average household income was for families surveyed to come up with this number.

This seems about right. Early on there are a ton of costs associated with diapers and child care and child care and child care and oh, more child care. That tapers off as the kids start school, but that starts getting more expensive the older they get when you get to start worrying about school sports or laptops for homework. Also likely takes into account healthcare. Insurance for me, alone, would be a $90 deduction on my check. Me+1 is $145. Looking at my check, it's a $395 per paycheck for me and the kids along with an extra $20 for dental and vision, so that's pretty cool. It's super cool working for a company based out of Alabama. My choices used to be so much better.
