Yeah I didn't realize he was 82. An absolute legend - gotta go and watch Michael Mann's Thief this weekend I think.

I just looked it up and I can't believe I've never seen this movie. Tangerine Dream, James Caan, Michael Mann?? What??

It was Mann's first movie, it has always been super critically well regarded, it basically invented the style of neon lights and strong color theory cinematography with synth sountracks that Refn, Korine, and South Korean directors basically copied, and it all starts with Thief. I'm not sure how you don't know this movie?! :p And the soundtrack is great. Mann's second film, The Keep, is also an awesome movie with Doom and Hexen vibes with a Tangerine Dream soundtrack, but unfortunately studio meddling cut the film from its original 2 hour runtime by half an hour so the last half hour of the movie is okay but incoherent - but the first hour is peak Mann/Tangerine Dream. The Keep has Legend vibes, but Mann instead of Ridley Scoot. Mann has disowned the film due to the meddling but the film has a deserved cult following. The behind the scenes story of that film is kinda crazy. But regardless of The Keep, Thief is great hands down.

Wtf it's on none of the streaming services somehow.

Was getting ready to crack a beer and watch this.

It's on PLUTO which is free.

JustWatch.com is like 99% accurate when trying to find what service has a movie or show. Thief is also on Kanopy and Hoopla, two free (and ad-free) services that you sign up for using a library card. JustWatch is really useful in cases like that, because while I’ve used those services before, I never really think of them when I’m looking for something to watch.
