Seems like a softer exit than I expected. Yeah, he resigned as leader of the Conservative Party but not as Prime Minister and there is no real mechanism to force him from the PM's office itself. Correct...unless they vote for no-confidence, which results in a general election (which the tories know they might lose): However, what he is doing is actually very very common in Parliamentary systems—you announce you are stepping down, but will remain in place as caretaker until your party chooses your successor. At the end of said tour he states that everybody wants him to put his hat back into the ring for the next leadership race. That or we end up with Priti Patel as the next PM.
