It's unsurprising that many -- if not, most -- people are feeling what is effectively a collective PTSD due to two years of a global pandemic with a devastating conflict at the tail-end of it.  It also doesn't help that this is occurring during winter when the relative lack of sunlight in the Northern Hemisphere also acts as a mood suppressant.

The winter months seem to be hitting my wife and I harder as we get older. We’re both in our early 30s and born, raised, and live in the Pacific Northwest and I remember winters feeling “cozy.”

Now they are just awful, especially with a 3 year old who wants to be outside all the time.

I don’t really talk about my personal life much but I’ve been with my company 10 years in a few months, and for the past year have interviewed for 3-4 different positions in the Phoenix metro area, and unfortunately none of them have worked out, either due to salary or lack of offer.

I definitely relate to “everything is shit right now and where is our societal reprieve.”

I hear that.  I've been trying to eat less lately, but it's almost like what's the point?  The Dems are going to get crushed in 2022 and 2024, and we'll be right back to 2016 with Trump as president with the GOP in full control of everything and could possibly use then to drop all pretenses and go full fascist theocracy mode.  It makes the option of Putin launching nukes almost seem like a welcome alternative.

I'm more afraid of nukes than the GOP except for what Trump would do with the threat of Nukes.

I don't know about some of you but bad life events tend to absolutely always happen in winter for me. When I feel winter coming on at this point in my life, I brace myself for a hit.

I used to joke I’d rather break my leg in the summer than win $5k in the winter, but I’m not sure it’s a joke anymore.

It’s not really even the cold (NW is pretty mild) or the rain, which we get a lot of. It’s the perpetual gray. There’s no time of day. It’s currently 8:30am and outside looks like it could be 8:30am or 2pm or 5pm.

That's exactly what it appears to be as well.

This lines up with my notion is that they'll allow a "rump" Ukrainian state to exist in the west.

Could this end with "Ukraine" (as in, the traditional western ethnic end of Ukraine) becoming an independent nation with capital in Lviv, joining the EU, etc?

That's a possibility.

From what I've read, Russia has no real interest in western Ukraine as they don't appear to consider it to be part of their perceived "Russian Peoples" sphere.  In fact, they've suggested that Western Ukraine be carved between Poland, Hungary, and Romania.

If the thumbnail doesn't show, it's a man filming from a window in Borodyanka when a Russian tank fires at him

When one side is more afraid of nuclear war than the other, then I don't know what the solution is.

Its just a scare tactic at that, there is no glorious return of the Russian Empire if there is no Russia, but its also painfully obvious that Russia can't win a war with the US at this point, let alone all of Europe/NATO.
