  1. Because there are no consequences for their actions when engaging in the behavior offline. That's the starting point, at least. If there were social powers and to some extent legal powers that actually de-incentivize rewarding the dopamine rush and financial gain of being a dumb jerk, there would be less dumb jerks. And more importantly, well-applied critical thinking skills can prevent the insensitive from becoming giga jerks in the first place. The amount of idjiots who went full-jerk over the past 5 years is quite staggering and there will probably be long-term effects that we haven't even seen the full scale of yet. This is of course a reality that becomes willed into existence when personal truths take priority and go unchecked in place of attempting to be more critical about information via approximating what is most objectively truthful when administering justice. It's the difference between a politically and scientifically literate society where compassion and having a good BS detector are the norm and technology is used as a tool to mostly prevent problems, vs a society like the feudal one in Rashomon where you're at the mercy of what "feels truthful" to any given person. Almost everyone deals with bias to some extent, but as far as I know most bad opinions can quantifiably be proven bad via research and evidence-based approach that shows how/why they are bad.
  2. I understand why you would feel that way about critical theory and intersectionality. That's all I have left to add to our exchange here. Take care.
  3. I think it's fair game to talk about this stuff on a games board because of how politics and games tend to intersect, but that's me. So to recap, you think the concepts of social equity and anti-racism are propaganda, you think companies should be allowed the freedom to moderate toxic behavior however they want with no concern necessary of applying more effective strategies than ones they might be using (many approaches come down to banning someone and only when they drop slurs, which can be good, but that alone has dogshit effectiveness in preventing subtle and codified bigotry), and the only other approach you advocate is using extreme violence (something that can be necessary in self defense, but not everyone has the ability to do effectively). That violence should be prioritized over psychology and changing political and social powers that enable white supremacy, heteronormativity, sexism, etc (which might sometimes require applying ideas represented via those terms you feel are loaded and propagandistic). I can definitely see why you expressed feeling hesitant to talk about politics here.
  4. So you would say allowing individual companies to moderate things however they want is more effective than applying evidence-based consequentialist approaches across the board that are proven to be most effective? And the other option for tackling bigots is taking martial arts classes to be a good enough fighter to beat them up in person? Is it possible these strategies might have bad utility in terms of effectiveness and equity for everyone combating injustice, and a more evidence-based approach via current understandings of intersectionality might have better utility, or do you genuinely think the best anti-hate world we can strive for is one where all individual companies should be trusted to handle these issues fairly how they see fit and everyone who experiences bigotry can/should be forced to learn how to fight like Anderson Silva to deal with their haters? I'll go out on a limb and say you've done a poor job presenting useful solutions for tackling/preventing normalization of increasing bigotry, and that's why you're getting pushback.
  5. This gen has been a treasure trove of fun horror games but with IPs like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame MIA, it kinda feels lacking as far as scary horror. Fortunately I still have PT on my harddrive so I'll definitely be playing that in a couple weeks.
  6. If covid thing is a jig, wouldn't he try waiting more than a few days before that (assuming he'd ever willingly reveal it in the first place)? Whatever the case, even if he does have a strategy in mind with some fake covid thing, it doesn't mean he knows what he's doing or that it would be effective for achieving his goals. But it's still behavior that makes sense to see from a narcissist and conman who feels like their time is up, and narcissists will do some crazy shit for the sake of "winning" and/or to prevent taking responsibility for their actions.
  7. All the shit he could still do throughout the upcoming weeks. There's still time to publish a tweet saying very informed, the most informed, experts found evidence he was a victim of covert biological warfare from China in collusion with the radical left to assassinate him, sabatoge the GOP, etc. I'm not sure how likely it is he'd try sparking a con with stakes that high, but it would still be on brand for him. There's plenty of chaotic hijinks he might resort to in an attempt to fuck shit up on the way out. It's not over til it's over.
  8. Poetic justice if it's true, but also a quick reminder that narcissists will say anything to gain sympathy points and support, and the biggest one in the country still currently has an election coming up.
  9. I'm torn. All six hours of that game are iconic so it could feel jarring if it plays differently, has added content and different pacing. Is it still MGS1 if the bird's eye camera is changed to MGS5's? How do you tweak the level design? Story? There's a domino effect to consider. On the other hand, blending its story and characters with MGS5's gameplay sounds like a dream come true if done well. There's a difficult balance to achieve, but it seems doable enough, so I'm hyped. What might've been more exciting though is a Metal Gear 1 and 2 remake with a Kojima-penned script! Those need the remake treatment more than any in the series.
  10. It looks like ass on the PS4 Pro. Glitches and bad texture pop in everywhere. Draw distance is rough. There are things I remember somehow almost looking better on the PS3, like the mountain/crag in the distance in the early portions of the game. But overall I'm glad to have it. Hopefully a lot of this stuff can/will be patched over time.
  11. Wow. Owning only a PS4 this gen I might be biased but I'll definitely miss the convenience of having 90% of the games that interest me all in one place. Are Capcom, CDPR, or Take Two next? Depending on the studios they keep acquiring and to what extent games will be platform exclusive things could get messy.
  12. People act like alcohol prohibition was was some insane old-timey thing we have no modern precedent for, but everyone's been living through an even more crazy prohibition our entire lives. It's a start. Some psychedelics and stuff like MDMA will hopefully be legalized at some point.
  13. Mario Sunshine and Galaxy's art style hold up so well I'm not even mad to be honest.
  14. So if you already have the one from launch day, you can't download the ultimate edition? You can't even get access to a next gen upgrade? Yeeeaah everyone by now knows they're being as anti-consumer as possible so it seems the best thing they could do is just admit they fucked up and provide an upgrade for all editions of the game.
  15. If the movie gets pushed back again...? fuck it! Release THESE this year and I'll use my phone camera and garageband to make it my own damn self
  16. Oh noes, we should've taken the white house's reports about UFOs seriously this whole time!!
  17. Say you already have access to films like Red Cliff and Hero. Is there anything you'd be missing out on when skipping this as far as epic-scale battles go?
  18. I was debating if it'd be worth it to go on a theater expedition during the coronacalypse for this movie but now not so much. Can't remember a Nolan Film that was actually confusing (even Inception was easy to follow once you know it's mostly just trying to visually represent layers of consciousness, etc) but everyone who's seen this is saying it's a hot mess. What makes this one confusing? Did it seem like Nolan was trying and failing to do an action blockbuster Shane Carruth story or something?
  19. I mean it sucks, but if buying a second copy for PS5 also buys the chance of a sequel or new Alan Wake game, I'm for it I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
