  1. I wanted to like it more than I did. The gameplay is classic Remedy mediocrity, and the tone and atmosphere are fantastic but the story and characters were lacking relative to Alan Wake.
  2. I haven't played Man of Medan but it's setting and tone seemed so much less interesting than Until Dawn. Little Hope looks a lot more up my alley, and I hope they can improve on the formula. One lesson I hope they learn is that not every character needs to be unlikable.
  3. Climbing is pretty accessible. Starting at your local gym is the cost of a daypass/gear rental and after a few times you can decide if you're interested in it. Bouldering and using an autobelay requires no prior knowledge, and gyms often offer top rope belaying classes for people as well. The initial cost for your own gear to use at the gym (shoes, harness, belay device, locking carbabiner, chalk bag) can be had for around $150 (black diamond momentum package and some beginner shoes.) From there you can learn to lead and transition to outdoor climbing. A sport rack is a little more expensive since a set of quickdraws will probably run around $150 and a rope can be $150-300, and you'll probably feel better with a helmet too. There's a lot more progression to be had from there, but by the time a person is looking to build a trad rack they're probably all in anyway. I live in a relatively flat state but still have five outdoor crags within 1-2 hours of driving from my location. It sounds like you live in the UK anyway, and they have a fantastic climbing history/culture.
  4. I do wonder what will happen when larger and larger melee tournaments start getting organized online, which seems almost inevitable what with the state of the world and the massive netplay improvement.
  5. They should add Melee now that it has good netcode!
  6. Discord is great but is already super bloated when it comes to features. I'm just a guy with an internet connection, but this seems like the type of expansionism that kills these kinds of companies and products over the course of a few years.
  7. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that youtube recommended this to me after not watching it in like half a year.
  8. I've been rewatching this. I'm very impressed with the general pacing of the show and how it manages to shift focus between the serial killer of the week plots and the Hannibal plot so deftly. Mikkelsen of course steals the show, somehow putting both Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins to shame. I also cannot believe that they managed to run this on network television. The body horror here is truly the most disturbing and interesting that I've seen including X-rated torture porn trash.
  9. I think it's interesting that the game's attempts to resolve the inherent ludonarrative dissonance of action games created it's own weird dissonance in doing so. It's no longer the disparity between the character's actions and how you're supposed to perceive them but rather the dissonance between the game's ultimate message and its medium. It's all very Funny Games.
  10. Looks like the matchmaking servers are currently overloaded. There are companies that care a lot more about their competitive scenes and online play than Nintendo that now have inferior online to this 19 year old Gamecube game.
  11. I'm not the world's best Melee player but I've been coaxed into playing netplay with some friends who are very competitive players. I tried this out today and it's a night and day difference between it and the previous versions of netplay. It's also a huge step forward in convenience since previously you had to go through a third party website to find people to play against but now it has easy matchmaking built in. This isn't just a step forward for Melee and netplay, it's a seismic shift that could greatly expand the competitive scene almost overnight.
  12. Ultrakill: My favorite demo so far, an old-school FPS with a point/combo mechanic. The movement is great, and between slides, wall jumps, and dashes you have a ton of options. All the weapons felt strong and well-balance, and you can do weapon switching ala the recent DOOM games to refresh cooldowns, adding another layer of complexity. The aesthetic is OK and I'm encouraged that the later levels of the demo see a location swap, since the game would've gotten stale fast otherwise. The gameplay felt deep and rewarding and reminded me of what I love about the recent DOOM games. This game inspired me to go buy and start Dusk, which I am enjoying quite a bit as well. Ghostrunner: I played this after Ultrakill, and my reaction was the complete opposite. The aesthetic is cool and I like what the game is trying to do, but where Ultrakill allowed for a ton of player expression this game feels positively on rails. The loop of wall jump, dodge, dash, slash is cool, but there is no meaningful variation in this loop throughout the entire demo. Gloomwood: Cool thief game. I like the atmosphere and thought that the demo level was very well-designed, although I found myself going loud a little too often to say that I got a great feel for how you're really supposed to play this game. Destroy All Humans: I loved this game, the remake looks fantastic. FAITH: Cool art and design;, slow, frustrating, and dull gameplay. Seems like the kind of thing that's for someone else. Iron Harvest: Does this game have a tutorial?
  13. It always looked obnoxious to me. It's just a bunch of clowns upset that there are lesbians in what's supposed to be their prepper fantasy.
  14. This is the walking into a glass window twice of tweets. It's not offensive, it just invites ridicule.
  15. Yeah, I agree with his take in this instance, but for someone who gives out a lot of criticism he receives it very poorly and always assumes the worst of intentions from anyone who disagree with him.
