Will watch...when it gets to home distro, I just don't do theatres if I can help it.

Same, the last movie that I saw in the theater was Ender’s Game back in 2013. At this point in time I don’t think that movies should be released exclusively in theaters. They should only be released in theaters as an option for people who enjoy that experience, but shouldn’t be the only way to view a newly released movie IMO.

This is the historic military unit upon which the film is based:

After reading that - that trailer does not look very historically accurate.  The historical women started having to fight because their men were getting killed and enslaved by other African tribes.  Then a big reason for having the women fight was to secure more slaves for their own tribe.  They did clash twice with the French, and lost both times being decimated and disbanded after the second conflict.

It honestly feels a bit scammy if you think about it.

Like, if they know that if they just released it for home viewing the same day as it's released for theaters that most people will choose not to see it in theaters, isn't that just artificial inflation?

Personally, I think Disney realized they hit gold when they found out people will gladly pay $20 to stream a new Marvel movie at home as soon as it's available. Disney gets to keep all the money that way. They still need to get through all of their pre-COVID contracts and shit to do it again (ScarJo lawsuit), but they will absolutely start doing same day streaming releases again. There's a reason they kept lying about how much money they made from the Black Widow release. They want to control who knows about that.

If only we had a large scale experiment of this idea to figure out if it works as a business model :p

I don’t think they will. What became absolutely crystal clear is day and date streaming devalues product and makes major releases feel just like any other flash in the pan movie of the week. It doesn’t produce cultural engagement like a hit theatrical release does.

The most sensible business model for these companies is the 45 day window. It sets these major titles apart as there are typically no more than 2-3 major new releases in theaters in a given week, and allows them an advertising window that in total is cheaper than having to completely spin up the marketing department again when windows were 120+ days.

Yeah releasing all movies day and date on streaming as well as theaters is so massively stupid.

I think they’re figuring out the sweet spot. Release the films, move theaters more into the “experience” model. Then release them on streaming 45 days later vs 6 months to a year like before.

Why? I’m 52 in somewhat poor health living in a small town with the closest movie theater to me 15 miles away, so seeing newly released movies in the theater isn’t much of an option for me these days. There’s a lot of movies such as this one that I would like to be able to watch from the comfort of my own home when they come out instead of having to wait a month or longer after they’re released exclusively in theaters to do so.

Why 45 days instead of 30? A month seems more reasonable to me, do movies usually stay in theaters for over a month? By the way, when did movies ever take a year to come to a home viewing format of some sort? From my memory even back in the early days of cable and VHS movies would come to those formats in less than 6 months, but more recently they come to DVD, Blu-ray and streaming in just a couple of months.

45 days puts a movie on streaming at the end of the 6th weekend of theatrical release. This covers, for 99% of films, 99% of theatrical revenue that will be generated. It is also short enough that the marketing window from theatrical to streaming is essentially one thing with a slight gear change.

And you are indeed not remembering. In the days of VHS, many titles did not become available for purchase for years after their theatrical release and typically did not become available for rental until 9-12 months after theatrical on the early end.

When DVD came out, we saw the windows shrink to 120 days, then to 90, and in the case of some flops, 72 days.

The studios tried out day and date with streaming and it just plain doesn’t work. There is too much streaming content released every week, so your big budget studio movie going to their exclusive platform just feels like nothing special.

Oh ok, I was wondering why it was 45 days. Thanks for explaining.

I meant VHS rental, not purchase. I rented movies on VHS all the time back in the day, but I don’t remember theatrical released movies taking 9-12 months to become available to rent. Perhaps you’re right, my memory isn’t what it used to be. :p

I knew that they tried it before with a few movies, and I was curious why it wasn’t the norm with all movies now. Oh well, 45 days isn’t that long to have to wait for a theatrical released movie to come to streaming.

Just saw this... very good. Take Black Panther and mix it with Bravehart and throw in a little Wonder Woman and Harriet and that's this movie.

Now that you shouldn’t be afraid to die if you leave your house anymore theatrical releases work because at the end of the day you just need to get out of the fucking house sometimes.

There's several movies coming out that I plan on seeing in the theaters in the coming weeks. Gives me an excuse to indulge that unhealthy movie popcorn 🍿

True. Two years ago if you wanted to go to the theater COVID would just be like dodger_d1p_center.gif.386cc66493b3e3a8d2

Two years ago was the best time to go to the theater. “Private” screenings of Tenet in IMAX for the price of one ticket.

Anyway, I’m planning to see this tomorrow.

Going to the movies has been a huge thing for me again post-Covid. I got a membership to the IFC Center, big indie movie place here, and go there almost every week at this point. They constantly, literally all day, run classics of every ilk. I just love the whole experience of going to the movies, always have. Sitting at home in my living room isn't the same to me. I enjoy the ritual, the screen size, the massive volume, the darkness, chatting with people about the flick afterwards.

And that’s the thing, if you can manage to not go on a Friday/Saturday night it’s not that expensive. Most places have $5 weekday movie nights or nights where they show classic movies for cheap. Yeah if you go every Saturday for every new release it’s expensive but plenty of ways to catch a movie without it being a $40 experience.
