I don't know where to move

There are people who have arrived in Virginia Beach from the worst parts of the developing world, looked around, and said aloud, "Holy shit!  I'm so glad I don't actually live in this fucking dumpster fire of a town!"

I don't know if you can even call it a town... it's just like if a cardboard cutout of a suburban home fucked a Wal-Mart and then got bitten by a radioactive spider and now 2 million people live there.

Move to the EaDo neighborhood of Houston. It’s pretty inexpensive, and good bus/light rail service around the area. Very manageable access to the restaurant/bar scene downtown in case you want to stay in hospitality.

And I’m here

Asheville gets very cold in winter, but of the quick wikipedia-ing I'm doing it's the warmest of the nice mountain towns in NC and SC I can think of.

one thing to think of would be college towns, if you can deal with the depressed wages and extreme seasonality that comes with them. Think Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, etc. I can't speak to how easy those are in the SEC country to get around in with little to no car, but in the college towns up north those are at least decently adaptable for being car free. NOLA would be good if all you want is air so humid you can drink it. just watch out for the occasional hurricane that can put it underwater

If I already think Portland is too cold, there's no way in hell I'm handling midwestern winters. I've spent probably 4 Christmases in Indiana and Ohio and never plan on doing it again.

Weather below 40 degrees turns me into a little baby.

*slaps cactus* Do I have a place for you. You could still be wearing shorts right now. Car free thing is a bit if a challenge but the hip areas like Tempe and downtown Phoenix have those little scooters you can rent, which is exactly what you want to do when it’s 110 out. You want hot, we got hot and cold weather lasts like two months.

Yup. Just move to Miami and call it day.

I've thought about it. Lack of good transit infrastructure is a thing, though

And wherever I move, I'm not planning on staying there forever. Ie I'm not buying a house or anything (I wouldn't buy a house in Miami. Or New Orleans for that matter).

I've never been, but I've been reading that Houston has been investing a lot in their light rail over the last decade or so, so that's cool. They also are still expanding freeways. One of your freeways is expanding to like 14 lanes or something? Demolishing thousands of homes and businesses that now have to relocate further down the freeway, thus inducing demand for said freeway and not helping traffic in the long run.

There's also the HSR being built between Houston and Dallas, but that might not be done until like 2040. If it ever gets completed.

You'd be the real gem, though, not the light rail.

You’ll have a hard time with good transit in most places in the Southern us. Atlanta might be an exception and maybe there’s others but idk.

Yeah, that's a thing. New Orleans and Charleston aren't as big of a deal because they're like... not big. Most of the city is within walking distance if not biking distance, depending on how central you are.

What about Vancouver, WA? :p

I know you're joking, but I used to live there. I used to commute between Vancouver and Hillsboro every day. Never fucking doing that again. Vancouver is actually where I went to middle school.

I'll give you a tip right now:

Warm + public transportation = mentally unhinged weirdos galore

The vast majority of people that don't drive in the States don't drive because they can't drive. And who can't drive? If you're looking for a place with good public transportation, it sounds like you need to deal with the cold of the Northeast or something. Anything in the South has public transportation where a bus ride to the local mall takes like 90 minutes and you'll be sharing the bus with three pedophiles, one guy jerking off in the corner and the bus driver decking toddlers regularly. Godspeed to you.

Dude, I deal with "mentally unhinged weirdos" every single day. There's a homeless camp across the street from my house. That kind of shit doesn't bother me.

Ideally I would retain a situation where I'm within walking distance of work. I've tried to maintain that for the last decade and have been mostly successful. There was a period of about a year where I had to commute to work; the rest of the time if I need a new job, I try to get close to where I live, or if I need a new place to live, I try to stick close to where I work. It's worked out for the most part so far.

I forget that this is just normal out West. I wasn't used to it whatsoever when I spent a year out in CA.

San Diego just opened an extension to our trolley line. It's one of the biggest public transit projects in the history of the city.

Now, unless you stay in a very limited number of neighborhoods it would still be very difficult to live without a car and home prices are insane, but you can't beat the weather.

There are some very affordable homeless camps he could stay at down by the river.

Yea it’ll be all fun and games until that first hurricane of the season comes rolling in from the Gulf.

He can stay in my guest suite. House didn’t flood in Harvey, and there is an OLED in the room!

I mean I could just stay there in general. I'm willing to factor in rent for work offsets, like I could tutor your kids. Someone has to teach them socialism and lost cause mythology, especially in Texas. Also I know what pi actually is, that's something that never got taught to me in school.

See? Perfect tutor.

The house I’m buying for for MIL has three bedrooms, so I’m sure she’d be happy to have you ❤️

You weren’t taught pi? Da fuq

I was taught the number and how to find the area of a circle and shit, yeah, but I never knew what pi actually *is*, like functionally, until much later when I got stoned and was curious. Or maybe they did teach me that and I never paid attention, who knows.

were you actually taught the theory of irrational numbers in school? It's much more of a math philosophy thing that I don't think we got into until I was taking like 300-level math classes in college, because it doesn't really have much practical use. Like what is and how do you calculate it and shit.
