b_m_b_m_b_m Posted December 13, 2021 Share Posted December 13, 2021 Asheville gets very cold in winter, but of the quick wikipedia-ing I'm doing it's the warmest of the nice mountain towns in NC and SC I can think of. one thing to think of would be college towns, if you can deal with the depressed wages and extreme seasonality that comes with them. Think Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, etc. I can't speak to how easy those are in the SEC country to get around in with little to no car, but in the college towns up north those are at least decently adaptable for being car free. And I’m here I've never been, but I've been reading that Houston has been investing a lot in their light rail over the last decade or so, so that's cool. They also are still expanding freeways. One of your freeways is expanding to like 14 lanes or something? Demolishing thousands of homes and businesses that now have to relocate further down the freeway, thus inducing demand for said freeway and not helping traffic in the long run. There's also the HSR being built between Houston and Dallas, but that might not be done until like 2040. If it ever gets completed. You'd be the real gem, though, not the light rail. And who can't drive? If you're looking for a place with good public transportation, it sounds like you need to deal with the cold of the Northeast or something. Anything in the South has public transportation where a bus ride to the local mall takes like 90 minutes and you'll be sharing the bus with three pedophiles, one guy jerking off in the corner and the bus driver decking toddlers regularly. Ideally I would retain a situation where I'm within walking distance of work. I've tried to maintain that for the last decade and have been mostly successful. There was a period of about a year where I had to commute to work; the rest of the time if I need a new job, I try to get close to where I live, or if I need a new place to live, I try to stick close to where I work. Now, unless you stay in a very limited number of neighborhoods it would still be very difficult to live without a car and home prices are insane, but you can't beat the weather.
