Bo Burnham - Inside

Recommended Posts

i thought it was pretty good. interesting art piece.

it’s like Bo’s music standup he does but from his guest home with some good editing.

if you’re expecting a typical stand up set, you’re NOT getting that. it’s not for everybody.

I thought it was absolutely fucking incredible.

The songs were all very catchy and funny and had some pretty good social commentary. Some standouts for me were "Welcome to the Internet," "White Woman," and "This is how the world works."

The production was really well done too. His eye for direction and production of this one man show was really good. I liked how the special mirrored the progression of madness the isolation of Covid brought on. Much like the pandemic, the set pieces go from whimsy into depression into madness. Bo is really vulnerable in it too, in terms of how he feels through Covid and what the isolation did to his mental state. It's all shrouded in comedy and sarcasm, but you can tell that coming through.

It was a really well done special and might be Burnham's masterpiece.

It’s brutal (in a good way). Another piece of quarantine-based media that makes me so glad that I had a regular job to go to every day.

Have you seen his film Eighth Grade? I thought it was excellent, and shows he has a ton of promise as a writer/director, if he decides to stay away from traditional performing. I’ve always enjoyed him as a performer, but these last couple projects show that he can do so much more.

I have seen it advertised, but I've not seen it. I may check it out.

I'm basically rewatching some of the ones that hit me the hardest. On a re-watch, "That Funny Feeling" is the one that hit me like a gut punch. This writeup really summarizes it well. It's the perfect summation of the most recent years of my adulthood.

Take a closer look at the masterful song that's a highlight of Burnham's special.

This hour and a half one man show might be the finest distillation of what has gone on inside everyone's brain. This, and the final song of the special have nearly reduced me to tears. It's really cathartic to hear in words and poetry and song what I've experienced in the last 15 months.

I also thought it was excellent. It did an amazing job of capturing this moment in time. I was very impressed at the production values he was able to achieve as a one man show. Really great work from the projections to the color grading in individual sequences, to wrangling multiple cameras. Really great stuff.

I keep going back to this absolute madness. It's just so fucking good.

I can't say I'm a big fan of, I don't know the proper term, 'comedy music' (?) so I didn't enjoy it on that level but I really liked the lyrics here. Never heard of him before either. I'll give this a shot despite the format not being my thing really.

He started in the early days of YouTube doing pretty much straightforward comedic songs, an awkward teen seated in front of a keyboard, but has definitely evolved beyond that. The finale of his previous special, Make Happy, is probably my favorite single piece of his. I watch it all the time.

And this special is largely taking that energy, that mix of silliness, theatrical self-importance, and deep insecurity, and trying to replicate it while spending a year in isolation (after taking years off of live performance). Just a little context if this special is your introduction to him. It’s definitely not for everyone.

I would like to know what, if any, of the more "serious" parts were scripted acts, or if they really were authentic parts that he decided to leave in to show that making this special wasn't all fun and games.

Also, I hope he is OK and has people checking in on him. Way too many comedians are depressed and end up taking their lives, and he jokes about that a lot, but far too often we just look at them as jokes, and not a warning cry.

Really, really good. Great commentary about how our society (and us as individuals) has been consumed and subsumed by the internet and social media...presented self-referentially from someone who rose and gain prominence using the internet (and who is delivering their message through it).

Very experimental, as comedy music programs go, and I think probably his best work. My favourite was probably Welcome to the Internet, though there isn't really a weak song.

I somehow never heard of him and tried the clip @TheLeonposted and I kinda became a fan instantly at 2:30 time stamp there. Checked out some other stuff I found I really liked, “art is dead” is REALLY fucking good and he was so young on that one. I only listened to all eyes on me and welcome to the internet from the special and will prob watch it tonite.
