Max mostly does fighting games right? I've watched a couple of his videos... he's tolerable for thee most part.

He started as a fighting game guy (He was a pro fighting game player and even helped cut the trailers for Killer Instinct 2013) but he has branched out and does other games too, if they interest him. He's a big lover of Capcom games too so he'll play a lot of those. And when they get together to do YOVG stuff (his crew) they play a lot of retro games too.

Calling him "a very successful twitch streamer" is actually pretty amazing for him because it's not like he's playing the hottest thing around. People show up because he's a cool guy and personally I don't think he realizes that himself sometimes.

So how's the difficulty for you Mr. Skillz? Some of those reviews make it sound like such a ballbuster, I was curious about that.

It's tough but not the hardest game I've played. You can't button mash and you have to actually learn the counters and defensive manuevers. The aging mechanic definitely makes runs interesting... I've made it to the second level at the age of 32 so that age will stick with me for the rest of this playthrough unless I start over. The rogue lite aspects are interesting but notnearly as punishing as something like Returnal. Make no mistake, it is not an easy game but it's not impossibly hard either. I'm still learning the systems though.

@Dimdendid you play Absolver? I played a lot of that and you get better at countering these quick combos once you start recognizing the fighting styles they're throwing at you. You start getting to a rhythym where you can counter a lot of combos by reading the attack strings and knowing what either the first strike is gonna be and countering that or knowing the last one. There's two types of dodge in the game and both are multi button affairs and that is taking some getting used to as well. Also maxing the regain helth on take down is imperative because I haven't figure out any other way to regain health. The second level does seem to be pretty tough. I lost all of my lives playing through that level. Fortunately you just start back over to where you were before you started the level and not at the beginning of the game, although that is an option.

This isn't a pick up and play casually type of game or standard beat em up like Streets of Rage or something. You have to actually learn how to play this game by it's rules. I'm diggin it though. It's not long, but it's deep and has a LOT of replayability.

So yea bought the game and played probably...3 hours tonight?

I basically so far just ran the first level over and over trying to learn the controls and moves a bit. It's very complicated in a way and the lack of a solid tutorial/training mission is pretty weird.

That being said I do really enjoy it and the presentation especially is great. The main things I really dislike are the aging system and lack of difficulty options. I feel like it's this thing that Indies are doing a lot now where they crank the hell out of the difficulty and add some vaguely rogue elements so reviewers can't call it a 5 hour game.

The aging mechanic is basically limited continues, which is fine, but I don't like them adding penalties on top and I dislike the interruption it creates every time. It gets real annoying after the fifth time in a row or whatever.

It's still a really unique and well crafted game that is a lot of fun when you're in the flow. But then you hit something like the 2nd level boss and the difficulty seems a bit silly to me with all that nonstop hyperarmor. I'm not gonna lie, despite really liking it in many ways, I was hoping it'd be slightly more arcade-y control wise.

Edit: Also, it's highly addictive. Woke up early to run the first level again and try a bunch of John Woo shit. Sliding over tables full of drug money and then eye-gouging a dude after smashing a bottle in their face is one of those things you can't get in any other game.

Good for them.

Ill pick this up when its on sale. Too much coming up. HfW, ER, TWW3, and GT7 all within 3 weeks. That's a little insane. Theres only so much hobby money, and it is split with miniature gaming.

Actually this is the play. Their Twitter announced they'll be adding additional modes like easier and harder modes and enemy waves etc. at some point. Game is really difficult, sometimes not in a fun way to me, and Easy mode in this game might actually be good to start with to 'train'.

Ohhh, this is great news! I would certainly purchase this if an easy is thrown in to support developers taking people who aren’t great at games into consideration. And cuz I wanted to play it but that was the only thing that stopped me.

I think there are games where it does add to the mood and feel to say hey, this is it and it's a struggle. Thinking of the Souls games for example or Subnautica. I think this goes for Sifu a lot less, at least in my opinion. It's a stage-based brawler that's really arcade-y in every other way unlike Dark Souls where you have this hollistic world.

The game is doing well, so kudos to them, but I do think adding difficulty options is smart here. As it stands, I think the game is prohibitively punishing for many players. It's a great game but I admit I gave up on it for now. I can destroy the first level but the second is an absurd difficulty spike boss and hyperarmor enemy wise. I'm just not great at this kind of fast fighting game rhythm and this game's reaction times and memorization make Sekiro look like amateur hour to me at least.

Waiting for the Easy mode to try again. I accept defeat 😬

Wow. This must be pretty difficult if you're giving up on it. Let's hope they incorporate different difficulty settings.

There are several ability unlocks on every stage and what you choose can help you with the boss of the level.

Also, a lot of bosses seem to be dodge or block a long string of attacks, then you go in. Don't expect to button mash or whatever. Eye poke puts in work too.

Nah it's not that I'm button mashing or didn't play around with it. I just find it super difficult and am a bit burnt right now. I just Platinum'd Returnal, did TLOU2 on Grounded and then got ino Hunt Showdown. I just didn't realize my reserves were running on empty. It's not the game's fault. It's just incredibly demanding and I'm too lazy right now.

Got it. So just the normal Bloodporne "This is hard I don't get it" post followed by "I'm a pro at this game" several days later :p
