I haven't played much because I've been working and when I do have free time I've been devoting that to the Souls games in anticipation of Elden Ring. Currently playing Dark Souls 3, the last From Souls game I need to beat before Elden Ring hits. Since this game isn't long, I'm gonna jump into this as well too this week and really dive into it. I didn't feel like it was super hard once you learn the mechanics.

I've been watching my friend who's really into fighting games crush it in this game via stream. He makes it look so easy, it's infuriating

I watched him again last night and...you know what? Fuck this guy, I'm gonna git gud at it as well just to outdo him (let's see how many controllers it costs).

Got it. So just the normal Bloodporne "This is hard I don't get it" post followed by "I'm a pro at this game" several days later :p

Thanks man. I should have put some money down on this. :p

You even quoted yourself being wrong. I still have yet to claim I'm a pro days later chief :troll:

I do this with everything. I try to be reasonable and an adult and just 'move on' when things are too hard in life and then I can't let it go and HAVE to go learn it/beat it/make it not a problem. I do this with everything. I had to brute-force redoing like half the engine bay on my car despite not knowing anything about it. I couldn't accept defeat lol.

What movie is that from? I recognize both actors but have never seen that movie. Definitely a Shaw Brothers joint from the late 70's early 80's I'd bet. Life Gamble maybe? The guy in the beard is definitely Phllip Kwok aka Kuo Cho aka No. 4 the Lizard aka Special Agent Hai-To aka Mad Dog

I actually have no idea! I know the gif and have seen the movie but WAY back. My peak Shaw Brothers and martial arts flick period was like...15 to 20 or something and they all have those typically convoluted martial arts flick names. I'm not sure I could name any of the movies I've seen accurately unfortunately besides the Hong Kong action flicks.

Btw, what's the deal with the Northeast and martial arts movies? I feel like a lot of my friends were, or are still, really into this stuff here.

When we were kids, the movies used to come on Saturday afternoons in the tri-state area from 3 to 5. That's where a lot of folks my age were exposed to them. Before that, they played in a lot of theaters in the area. After they stopped coming on TV and being played in the movies, you could find bootleg VHS' of them all over the place. Once Wu-Tang came out in the 90's, they reinvigorated what was already there in the culture. Now with streaming and the internet, a lot of people have rediscovered these movies from their youths. I just got this book recently

I haven't started reading it yet, but yeah... Shaw Brothers movies, Bruce Lee movies and others were such a large part of my early childhood. I think it was watching those movies that taught me how to sit down and actually follow a narrative and not just wait for action scenes. I discovered Jackie Chan and Jet Li later when I started buying import movies myself. There was a videogame store near Times Square that no longer exists that sold boot-legged Asian Movies and imported unreleased videogames and anime. It's where I discovered Dragon Ball Z for the first time.

EDIT: HA I was right! it IS from Life Gamble... it says the name in the URL of the gif. Also it's from 1979... right again. I don't think I've seen that movie but I AM aware of it. Whole movie is on You Tube for free

Actually the only reason I played so many games later on was because we had the "Hong Kong Discs" hookup, as they called them. A friend of mine was good with electronics and modded our Playstations to play burnt discs and he knew this Chinese guy who would come through the local deli and barber shop with a massive shopping bag full of bootleg "Hong Kong Discs". They'd be CD-Rs of Playstation games with a super cheap photocopy of the cover wrapped around it. $5 each.

And regarding movies, I actually had a friend who introduced me to John Woo and stuff like that and I got super obsessed with Hong Kong action flicks. One of my favorites was called In The Line Of Duty (on the box at least) but it turns out it's a whole series and I have no idea which one I kept watching. The one movie that really got me was Sword of Vengeance, the first Lone Wolf & Cub. I saw that before Shogun Assassin somehow and I LOOOOVED that movie.

Yup the store I mentioned before would mod your playstation so you could play import and bootlegged discs so we did that too. You could also just do the disc swap trick if you didn't want to mod your playstation. Those first playstations had a pretty high failure rate if I recall... i remember folks having to put their playstations on their sides or play them upside down to get them to work.

Oh I absolutely had to! I forgot about that. Mine was stood up on its side, leaning against some books at an angle so the bottom could 'cool'. Who knows if that even worked.

I think it was because the laser would get misaligned or something. Don't know but practically everybody who had an original playstation had to do that before they fixed it.

Made it to the last level at age 32 and ended up beating the final boss at like 70-something.

I feel like I retaliated after the game got me initially but it ultimately wasn't as good as I was hoping. Combat system is often super cool when it clicks but they really pulled a Nioh on the level and encounters. First two levels are super good and then it too often turns into an annoying gauntlet of repetitive mini-bosses in small rooms. A game with 5 levels should have way more variety than this. Last level feels like they just went ehhh whatever.

First two levels are probably a 9/10 experience though if you have the patience to not bodyslam your TV.

I picked this up yesterday for $22 on cdkeys which seemed like a good price and with the easy mode out now. I played through it in about 4-5 hours and it’s quite a good 3D beat ‘em up! I was about 54 I think when I beat it, so the easy mode is definitely reasonable. I think even for replaying it I will stick with easy mode and just trying to beat levels younger, that is a lot more fun to me than just losing over and over again.

There is definitely a lot more complexity and nuance to the combat than most 3d beat ‘em ups, playing kind of somewhere between Dynamite Cop (Deka 2) and Tekken.

I can see how punishing it could be without the easy mode, but I wonder if that’s really for fun factor or just artificially increasing the length on the otherwise rather short play time. I think ideally for me the easy mode would just be default and the game would have twice as many stages.

Still, it’s longer than most beat ‘em ups anyway and certainly deeper. I think it’s safe to say if you were looking at this wanting it to just be a 3D beat ‘em up you can have fun with, the easy mode allows you to do just that now, and it’s a very good one with amazing style.

Also sweeeeet on the deck.

Oh and to me, at least playing on easy, I thought the level 3 boss was the only one that stood out as super cheap. I don’t think their move-set works well for this game at all and it wasn’t fun to play that fight. Lost about half of my lives there. Seemed super spongy too, more so than say the last boss.

Now that the game has an easy setting, I want it. I’m assuming that like with a lot of modern games the easy setting is more like normal and not actually easy.

Almost every game that I’ve played in recent memory the normal setting is like hard, and the easy setting is like normal. I play most games on their easy settings now for that reason. I always start them on normal, but more often than not find the challenge to be harder than what I consider normal.

Easy is usually the sweet spot setting for me, it offers a challenge without being frustrating. Life is frustrating enough, I don’t want my games to be too.

I think the easy mode is probably slightly easier than a “normal” mode would be but the sense of danger from how it’s set up kinda makes it seem more difficult than it is.

That’s fine, because I would rather a game be a little on the easier side than on the harder side. I’m definitely going to buy this when it’s on sale.
