I don't know what the data actually says about this but I do know there was a clear difference in NYC before and after they started tackling petty crimes like turnstyle jumping. NYC had definitely drifted back to 80's and 90's levels of dangerousness and that's why Adams got elected. Personally I think the pandemic and lockdown exacerbated the xtime problem, but here we are. I say all that to say that in not exactly mad about the turnstyle jumping thing.

Wait he’s American?

He was until I think five years ago. He renounced over the US requirement for citizens to file tax returns no matter where we live, he's actually a poster child for why it's so dung, he hasn't lived here since he was IIRC five years old, no other country would make a citizen file tax returns in that situation.

It's fucking stupid that American citizens have to file taxes if they live and work overseas.  End the madness!

We denounced Eritrea on the floor of the United Nations for distorting its diaspora for having the same exact policies on this as we do. There's only a couple of other countries that pull this shit and IIRC one of them is North Korea.

Isn’t there a wage minimum where if you’re below that you don’t have to file?

No. You always have to file. There's $100k of exempted income but there can be enormous differences in what's considered taxable and what's not. This comes up a lot with retirement plans for instance. If you're getting $100k a year in a retirement plan that's non-taxable where you live then the US will want you to pay income tax on that $100k for example, it's not just a flat "the first $100k is exempt".

It's also a massive time, effort, and money burden. If you're living in say the Czech Republic do you think it's easy or cheap to find someone with right mix of legal/financial and language skills to reconcile US and Czech taxes? If you're a billionaire then you probably have people on retainer anyhow who can handle it for you, but for someone right around the $100k line it's a BIG burden.

Like a lot of this shit is ridiculous and was sold as getting the rich to pay their fair share but does basically nothing to get money out of them while massively screwing regular people. When FATCA was passed a lot of American expats got kicked out of their local banks because otherwise the banks would have had to become unpaid IRS enforcers, and it can still be a problem getting a local bank account because of this. Also FATCA, the IRS went after a bunch of Canadian-American dual citizens for failure to file. They were citizens because they'd been born here while their parents happened to be in the US, but many had never even been back. They hadn't filed because they wouldn't have had any reason to think they needed to find out if they needed to file because in any other civilized country it would be a "no duh you don't live here and have no income derived from here so of course you don't".

Dirt bikes and atvs in a city are goddamn annoying. As long as no ebikes are in there this is fine

There are also problems with large groups of young men swarming them riding the wrong way, intentionally playing chicken with motorists, and just all around creating a public safety and noise problem.
