  1. Lynn Hill for the first free ascent of The Nose (5.14a/b) of El Capitan in 1994. The Nose was first ascended in 1958 with aid by a party over the course of 47 days. Since then it has been one of the premier objectives in big wall climbing. For years before Lynn Hill claimed the first free ascent (climbing using only one's body without the use of tools or aid using ropes only for protection) the route was thought to be impossible without aid. This ascent was likely the greatest climbing achievement of its time and is one of the rare instances in modern athletics where a woman's achievements and abilities eclipsed that of her male contemporaries (I'd be interested in hearing of more examples of this). For additional context, The Nose was not repeated in a free ascent until 2005, 11 years after Hill's first ascent, and it has only been repeated by 8 individuals. Alex Honnold currently holds the aided speed climbing record of The Nose, but has never completed a free ascent of the route.
  2. This seems like a bad move that will increase the perception of Netflix losing content. I think the weekly release schedule works for some shows and doesn’t for others. Which model is better is far from objective and subject to personal preference, but switching to weekly releases feels like Netflix losing its identity and seems like another step in its fading away from the forefront of streaming services.
  3. Lost River is a pretty mediocre film, but I was just looking through Smith's IMDB and was absolutely floored to see that he was Mr. "Look at my muscles."
  4. I liked the ep and the scene, but the whole thing didn’t make sense. Daemon wasn’t present during the conversation about using himself as bait, he didn’t coordinate his actions with the fleet, you couldn’t mobilize a naval landing in the time it took him to run off like a loon, and someone is crabfeeder’s army surely would’ve noticed the army mobilizing before they had arrived on shore, mustered, and attacked. It was a cool scene that continued to establish that Daemon is just angstier Geralt, but it was very late season GoT logic.
  5. I think the truth is the fantasy genre has always disproportionately attracted racists because the fantasy races are generally thinly veiled representations of non-white ethnicities and cultures. The genre tends to codify the implicit racial hierarchies of western society and many fantasy fans like this. Speaking of racists. I like the way they portray the differences in how humans and elves perceive time and history. Speaking of time and history. I love how the show is taking its time. My favorite part of the LotR trilogy were the moments just chillin in the shire. I feel like fantasy movies and series tend to abandon character building and world building too quickly for fighting dragons and world-ending threats.
  6. I particularly enjoy the characterization of Daemon. As @Fizzzzleput it, he's petulant, but not evil or without honor. The tournament scene showed this best where things got heated but he didn't take the opportunity to kill or maim "Crispin." He made the mistake of celebrating too early but he also accepted the loss with as much dignity as can be expected of a hot-headed prince beaten by a commoner. I think Viserys fundamentally doesn't understand his brother, and the only person who actually gets both his motivations and how to address him is Rhaenyra. Also I'm 100% convinced that Rhaenrya is just Bean from Disenchantment.
  7. Pine Barren is the best Pine Barren episode since The Sopranos. Definitely one of the strongest episodes in the series. I also think the Nandor Laszlo conflict is a direct reference to the Christopher Paulie conflict in The Sopranos episode.
  8. I wasn't aware of this. The actual event seems incredibly interesting but I doubt a drama series can do the history justice (see the fantastic but wildly inaccurate show Chernobyl). I do think I know what I'll be reading next though.
  9. NFTs suck balls. However, I do think they will probably end up having a place in gaming as a method of doing cosmetics. The problem with NFTs is people using them as a scam or thinking they can make a shitty game around them, but the actual technology seems well-suited for TF2 hats. Maybe I’m just ignorant but I predict I’m like 5 years NFTs will be normalized in gaming and it won’t be a big deal.
  10. Big fan as well, I feel like this grungy suburban vibe isn’t really done well that often. I kind of wish the movie spent more time in the community paranoia phase before moving on to the meat and potatoes, but that’s probably because I’m just enthralled by that kind of atmosphere.
  11. I use shady streaming websites over Prime video despite paying for it because the Russian teens who run those sites do better UI design and have a better player.
  12. Finally got around to watching this. I have a pretty mixed opinion of the book but I can’t imagine a better adaptation of that source material than what they’ve done with this movie. I love how empty and grand everything is. It’s the perfect look for a sci-fi universe gone so high it wraps back around and becomes low fantasy.
  13. This game is pretty fucking sick. My only concern is that it doesn't seem super content heavy. The content that is there seems very replayable since it's all about getting into that Tetris-like flow, but there's nothing wrong with having more levels either. I feel like this game is in a very similar niche to the recently released Neon White, and if I had to place my vote I'm on team Rollerdrome. Shill Up's comparison to the recent DOOM games is pretty apt.
  14. Her version of Country Roads as used in Whisper of the Heart feels like it had to have been made for the movie.
  15. Looks good. I adore in Bruges and Farrell and Gleeson have some of the best chemistry I've ever seen. Curious how in the 15 years since In Bruges Colin Farrell has aged 15 years and Gleeson hasn't aged a day.
  16. Agreed. I feel like this show had a great premise and setup but the direction it is taking is worrying. I want more Lord of the Flies, less LOST.
  17. I'm hoping that Gene gets a call from Walter telling him they have to go back to the island and Jesse's been dead the entire time.
