  1. Waititi is one a select group of people like Lord and Miller that manages to make things that should be bad pretty good. This doesn't seem like it has any reason to exist, but he certainly has the sensibility to make it work, if anyone can. Waititi is so good at directing children that I'm kinda disappointed that this isn't live action, but I'm guessing this is a side project for him. According to IMDB he directed a movie about the American Samoa soccer team called Next Goal Wins (with Elisabeth Moss, Michael Fassbender, and Armie Hammer) for Fox Searchlight, He directed the Pilot of a Time Bandits TV series for Apple TV, has announced he'll work on Flash Gordon, the follow up to What We Do in the Shadows, We're Wolves, and possibly a Star Wars movie. All this before he won an Oscar. I'd never have expected that Waititi would become such a hot property in Hollywood, but it couldn't happen to a better dude.
  2. If this was a Valve project, I might bash it a bit for still being a bit dated, but considering where it came from, this is a spectacular achievement. The DF video is a really good look at what they upgraded and how it makes a difference. I don't think I've played Half Life in 20 years, but with Alyx coming out, I might give this a go.
  3. Well, it certainly looks like CS meets Overwatch. The most surprising thing to me is that it's coming this summer. Those graphics don't look close to final.
  4. Warren got 10 total delegates yesterday. I haven't seen any polling suggest that her voters would all go to Bernie. Maybe Sanders gets most of those votes, and maybe gets to declare himself "winner" of another state, but in terms of delegate count, there's no way her dropping out would have allowed him to come out with a delegate lead today. The good news from yesterday is that Bloomberg is gone. It's now a two horse race. I just hope at the end of it Democrats are in a position to beat Trump. I'm not convinced that either has an obviously better chance to win, but at the moment I don't know if I'd bet on either.
  5. I'm surprised to see an electronic voting machine in San Diego. Looking into it a bit, it seems that the voting machines were being rolled out in 2004, but by 2007 the state halted their use. Nowe we've got a mandated 1 electronic voting machine per district (which doesn't make any sense to me). In 2012, 1,400 of the 1.2 million votes in San Diego were cast on an electronic voting machine. San Diego is also currently looking for a contractor to come up with an entire voting system. So that explains why I've never seen one, and kinda why the UI is so bad.
  6. Cool, I didn't watch each one. I'll probably start with shift, hopefully that one strikes the right compromise between immersion and what my stomach can take.
  7. I know she basically doesn't have a chance anymore, but I still put in my vote for Warren. She's been the one I've been most impressed by throughout the whole campaign, and I've been a strong supporter of voting for who you want to be President, not who you think will win.
  8. I have not kept up with this thread at all, but I recently bought the game given that it was on sale for $3. My initial (~5 hours) impression of the game is that it's at times very impressive, mostly in production value, but it doesn't feel like anything new. Often, when it turns into a hallway shooter, it feels like it could be 20 years old. I've been playing on Ultra with the "neutral lighting" option enabled, and while it can be really hard to see things at times, I like that night actually feels like night. I just really wish I had a freaking flashlight. It's been a little while since I've played a modern PC game, and while the Division isn't the most impressive game I've ever played, it looks good, runs well, and loads pretty quick. One thing that strikes me is the density of it all. I'm not really sure if I would prefer the alternative, but it's almost jarring how many directions you can get pulled in at any given time. I could have a very short walk from where I am to my next destination, and I can get caught up in three random encounters, stumble upon a new control point, be alerted to multiple collectibles, and be asked to join in a random person's mission. Take a screenshot and it looks like a wasteland, but walk 500 feet and it doesn't feel like that at all. Again, maybe I don't want to play a Division game where travel feels like vanilla WoW with lots of empty travel time and the feeling of a huge expanse, but the current juxtaposition is notable. One thing I'd like some clarity on from experienced players: how does calling for a shepherd work? I've answered a few calls and I've been pretty confused. A few times I got called in at the beginning of missions, and basically played through the mission with them. Were they just using the regular matchmaking system, which then asks random people around the right level to join, or do they ask for help in a specific way? I've also answered calls just to end up at the very end of a mission or some kind of event, have it finish up within a couple minutes, and get kicked immediately from the group. Again, so are those people specifically asking for help, having me join them for 5 minutes, and kicking me because they're dicks, or is the system calling me into their game for some other reason, so they don't expect a random dude to show up?
  9. I started watching those and decided I'll just play it. Teleportation isn't my favorite, but as of now there aren't many better options. Everything else continues to look like it's setting a new standard for narrative VR games. Really need to get my Oculus working again on my new PC.
  10. Well, I think that the big question revolves around how long we will have to wait in order to play a game from 1997. The remake was announced in 2015 and will only barely made it out before the PS5. For myself, the initial hope was that after the first installment, we'd get the rest of the story in relatively quick, regular releases. After all, they'd already have a battle system, a game engine, major assets created, etc. If Part 2 needs to be entirely re-imagined for the PS5 or even just re-engineered for the new architecture, who knows how long we'll be waiting to play part 2, much less the whole game. Somehow, I think if this was FF20 and they just said this was part one of an on-going story, people wouldn't be so hesitant.
  11. I haven't been paying attention to him, but it sure seemed like he really fell off a hard cliff at the end there.
  12. A whole lot of TV platforms have built Airplay streaming into them. If you have a Samsung, Vizio, LG, or Sony TV, you might not need anything else. You can also get the Apple TV app on Rokus (both the TVs and the streaming devices). Really, the only things that don't have any way to get Apple TV now are Chromecast, Android TV, and Fire TVs.
  13. Yeah, I haven't been trying too hard to get one, but I've had one on my list since June of last year and they've very rarely been in stock.
  14. It is kinda impressive (in a sad, depressing, Trump kinda way) that he's going to be on trial for corruption and still "wins" elections again and again. I often wonder what elections in the US would be if you ran them back 3 times within the same year. Can you imagine what 2016 would look like if we tried it again twice over? Maybe the Dems get their act together because of the sudden realization that Trump can win, or maybe Trump's initial narrow victory really rallies his base and they take an actual significant victory. Given that election season already never ends in the US, maybe more frequent elections would be fun.
  15. The most infuriating part in all this is that Trump will run on protecting people with pre-existing conditions and lowering costs and all the other popular parts of the ACA while both getting them overturned in court and only having ever proposed plans that did none of those things, and half the country will believe him anyways.
  16. They really need to announce the timing of the second episode before they release this one. I think a lot of people will be unaware and quite unhappy that this is only part one of ??, and if there's no indication of when the story will continue, I think that'll leave a bad taste in people's mouths. If they can commit to some kind of timeline, hopefully something relatively quick given that they now have an engine and battle system and what not, I think it could go a long way in nurturing some good will.
  17. SFF cases always seem kinda cool, but as someone that keeps their tower under the desk, it never really seemed worth it to me to spend more to get a less flexible smaller pc.
  18. The Grand Budapest Hotel - 5/5 - Perhaps this is his masterpiece. Inside Llewyn Davis - 5/5 - Wait, Oscar Isaac doesn’t have an Oscar? He hasn’t even been nominated? This is the darkest timeline after all. Hang me.
  19. It's odd to me that MS would spend millions luring a few streamers and then cut the workforce producing the service only months apart. It seems that Shroud's Mixer viewership is only 1/3 of what he got on Twitch, so I can't imagine his presence (and Ninja's) have made many converts in either streamers or viewers. I'm just not convinced that these kinds of platforms don't just naturally gravitate towards monopolies. YouTube has certainly maintained an effective monopoly share despite all the issues with the platform. I'm impressed that Twitch managed to exist at all, and it seems they may have proven that live streaming can be a different enough to keep it distinct. Then again, they haven't really shown they can consistently grow their audience beyond their core gaming audience.
  20. Is the Simpson's short an effort to boost Disney+? Like "hey remember when you liked The Simpsons? Stream it all now on Disney+!"
  21. Also never played it, but it's the kind of game where I would expect a good performance to overcome the hurdle of celebrity.
  22. Mad Max: Fury Road - 5/5 - Good lord is this such a good movie. The thing that struck me the most about this nearly five years later is just how completely unique it has remained. It just feels like when you have a movie so striking and successful that maybe there would be more imitators. Maybe it's just that Fury Road is so insane that you just can't steal much from it. The one aspect of the film that has proliferated is the score. That's probably because Junkie XL has done a bunch more, but I feel like of all the visual insanity of Fury Road, it's interesting that the score is the thing that has been the most influential. In Bruges - 5/5 - Still feels fresh and clever and as funny as ever. It's easy to forget how good Colin Farrell is in this. Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes are both excellent as well, but Farrell is just such an inconsistent actor that when he is really good, it stands out.
