Alan Wake II - 8/10. Creative with the design and presentation for sure. Story really got wonky and are we now gonna have to wait another 13 years to find out where these characters end up? Dammit. Altogether a good game.

Oh damn, that’s some praise.

I am playing two similar games, Mirage and Gaiden. Where Mirage feels like a “we need a game for holiday season” filler, Gaiden is the opposite. You can feel the love the devs have for their series, Sega, and its fans. The devs know what the fans want and man, do they deliver.

It makes you wish Ubisoft would do the same for AC. How do we not have a AC game take place in modern times? So many squandered opportunities for AC.

There are at least two pieces of dlc so we shouldn’t have to wait that long to find out more!

Ive wanted a modern day AC for so long now :(

But I waited for a follow up to Mario World for 30 years and it finally happened so you never know

Good, because I bought the digital deluxe edition so I'd have the DLC ready to go when it drops.

Mayyybe I'll go back and try Control again ot even play Quantum Break.

The AWE expansion of Control is good if you haven’t played that. I think QB is awesome too (and it has a bigger part in AW2 than I expected..if tweeked to get around licensing), the worst thing about that game was the performance at launch but that will obviously not be an issue for you now.

This should have been DLC for Valhalla instead of its own game. It’s filler. There is no need to play this unless you are craving the older style AC which in that case, I suggest playing one of the older games over this. I thought everything was a step back outside the graphics.

This is probably going to be my final "completion" list for 2023:

God of War: Ragnarok (PS5)

Resident Evil 4 Remake and Separate Ways DLC (PC)

Warhammer 40K: Boltgun (PC)

Diablo IV (PC)

Alan Wake and The Signal/The Writer DLC (PC)

Alan Wake's American Nightmare (PC)

Shadow Warrior 3 (PC)
A Plague Tale: Requiem (PC)

I'll provide a more detailed write-up of my thoughts for these games in the coming days.  I wish that my "completed" list was longer, but life really, really got in the way in 2023 :p

RoboCop: Rogue City

That was FANTASTIC. I’ll 8.5/10 it. Between this and Dead Island 2, AA is back baby. I really think this gen we will see the return of scaled down AA games that look and play great. We have both the developer tools this gen and the desire for this to happen as AAA takes longer and longer to make.

The game looks amazing, sounds amazing, has a great story, plays like absolute butter with some of the goriest crunchiest gun fights you could ask for, and has a surprising amount of heart. Hell, it does moral consequences better than a lot of rpgs.

The serve and protect missions are a little annoying because you wander around pretty aimlessly without any direction to complete them and are finicky to detect your goals, those broke the flow for me a little. But those are 3 of the 57 total possible missions in the game and totally optional (and not much of a reward) - and the game is a little buggy sometimes, with more crashes on pc than I would have liked.

Thats about it for complaints, I’m knocking it down for the crashes, if they patch it so it’s more stable on pc then I’d give it a 9. I liked everything else about it.

It did something special for a licensed game in that I wasn’t even a huge RoboCop fan, but I am now.

I saw the two movies, having not remembered them (possibly never even watched the entire thing of either?) after starting the game and thankfully the game follows the tone of the first one much more than the very very strange second one. It counts both in its lore though, and pretends as though nothing else existed besides those two. And though it’s not canon, it allows itself to advance the story past Robo2, redeem Robo2 a bit, and provide a solid ending to the original movies. Whoever owns the franchise really should make this canon, for whatever that would be worth.

I will definitely need to check out their Terminator game at some point now, it was already on my list. I know it won’t look nearly as good and is lower budget and they have more experience with this one, but if it’s even half as good at doing justice to the first two Terminator movies it seems like a must play.

The game can be beaten in under 10 hours but that would be less than half the game. It took me a bit over 20 hours to do all the side missions. I’d recommend doing the same especially as your actions in doing or not doing so has story consequences.

Cant fucking wait to see what this team does next. Something must be in the water in Poland that makes for great developers.

It's good, sometimes great, never amazing.

I have to credit Nintendo for not fumbling the level design as a single player game, when it's designed to work in multiplayer.  It's the game's biggest triumph.  The level design rarely feels like it's missing something, or has too much blank space, which was my biggest worry.

There's things in New Super Mario Bros Wii that were probably fairly fresh at the time for the 2d series.  Floating bubbles you swim in, swinging ropes, propeller hat, blocks that spawn enemies, throw-able barrels, many more platforms that rotate, fireballs destroying ice blocks, etc.  As a negative, it draws from the franchise well just as frequently for one-off moments.  Yoshi's you can only use in the levels they're designed for, chain link background walls from SM World are used sparingly, the occasional mini mushroom from NSB DS, etc.  The "hey remember this from this better game" is a bit too strong with the SMB3/World references. The boss fights in this one are pretty great though, even if they draw on koopaling tropes.

It's a much better game than either of the DS ones (I beat the first, but got too bored with the second).

Finished Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. The first game I ever owned as a kid(on NES) I finally beat it for the first time on my own. Don't care I got the benefit of saves and all that here. I'm bad at old platformers and this was gonna be the only way I could ever do it. Got too frustrated in some of the later levels, so I'm glad I saved my P-wing power ups for them because I cheesed my way through.

This is a very fun game, very similar to Diablo. I spent probably over 150 hours playing the game and beat the story with each of the six characters! It still had some annoying bugs that wouldn't get fixed. They really dropped the ball on online play, which I never got to work on. I might come back to it later because it did have some post-game content that I didn't do much of. But that content seemed extremely long, even compared to what I had already played. All the characters played differently to some degree, and you can spec differently. It had similar specs to the table-top games, from the little experience I have with doing that. The story is okay, but there is just a little difference in dialogue, and each character has a different background. They did add two chapters post-game, but that didn't add much to the game. I only finished that on one character. Worth playing for Warhammer fans.

Warhammer 40,000 Boltgun

A fun throwback shooter with a lot of charm and style.  I know next to nothing about Warhammer, but everything is littered with chunky dudes and skulls in a satisfying way.

The only major gripe is that good lord this game needs a map.  Like a Doom a lot of levels require you to find a key and unlock a door to progress, but sometimes the stage is just so full of similar mechanical nonsense that it’s hard to remember where the hell you were when you saw it the first time.

Fun times though and a good little 8-10 hour distraction.

Finished Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition. Got all the characters. Back when I played the original I missed Harle cause you have to play part way through a new game plus till she joins the party, finish the game before she permanently leaves the party and start another new game plus. Didn't encounter any crashes or freezes. It was nice to try Radical Dreamers but it's not that great so I'm glad it's simply included, with no extras like achievements. I played through Radical Dreamers just once (played it before starting Chrono Cross) and almost had to start over but thanks to my save rotation was able to go back a save and finish it (you need to have enough health - though your health isn't visible - to be able to finish it and on the first attempt I got unlucky with random encounters and all the sources of healing were already used up).

And adding Like a Dragon Gaiden

I’ve played some of 1 and 2 but this is only the second one I’ve beaten, the other being 0. But knowing the character enough, and the game doing a pretty good job of catching you up to date on the franchise in a lot of ways, I was still left pretty teary eyed by that ending. I can only imagine if you played them all. G’damn.

Really really well done story here. I also did all of the side quests besides the find the 7 golden balls thing because I refuse to do that kind of quest in games. I also completed all colosseum fights. That mode, especially the team battle part, was freakin awesome. The side quests in general were great and lots of fun.

No filler, all thriller, the game constantly is in service of entertaining you.

The last optional colosseum fight was more difficult than it needed to be (it has a health regen mechanic) and two of the other late game colosseum fights had a timer that they shouldn’t have had, but that is essentially the end of my complaints. I wish this was more the length and scope the series adopted but I will definitely play more of them and I’m more curious in 7/infinite wealth now.

What a touching and charming and fun game. I’d probably put it at #2 above GOW and just under Elden Ring had I played it when it came out last year. I definitely recommend it to any platform, Zelda, or Night of the Woods fans. Or basically anyone who has a heart. Definitely earns that 99% Steam positive rating. You’d essentially have to be a monster not to enjoy it.

I guess this will about wrap it up for 2023. Finished Valhalla, which was really flippin' good, especially for free DLC, and although it was already on the list, we beat the final level of SMB Wonder. And lo and behold, there were a bunch of secret levels that popped up with question marks. I really thought we hit them all, but I was wrong!

Man, this year was franchise central for me. It's like besides Resident Evil, Zelda, Mario and God of War, once I played one game of a franchise, I played the rest. :p

2023 Games

Starcraft (using SCII Mass Recall campaign)

The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me

Another of those games, another enjoyable, if frustrating experience. They are never amazing, but as a big fan of Until Dawn and The Quarry, it helps fill a void.

I think after I’ve traded it in and grabbed Super Mario RPG, I’ll work through GoW: Ragnarok, but I think Alan Wake 2 will be next.

As 2023 ends, I am pleased that I completed 19 games considering I started a new job in January with a much longer commute and less time off.

Like a Dragon Gaiden is definitely my GOTY. I had the most fun playing it and it got my hyped for the next game in January.

If I could go back in time, I would definitely skip FF16.  This was a tough decision between FF16 and AC Mirage. Since Mirage isn’t a mainline entry, I gave it to FF16. It does feel like I am done with FF.

Sleeper GOTY is Dead Island 2. I know it sold pretty well but more people should play it. Really fun game.

Best purchase was the ROG Ally. Fuck Linux. Anyone that supports that pos is my mortal enemy.

2024 should be a good one. Q1 looks good. PS5 Pro. Switch 2 announcement. More PC handhelds with OLED.
