Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, lost his brakes in Colorado’s high country and failed to take a runaway truck ramp before he rammed his speeding semi into stopped traffic.

Clearly the guy is at fault for the deaths as he had opportunities to use the runaway ramps but didn’t.

 

But 110 years is just insanity.

Yeah, that was crazy to me that he didn't at least get concurrent sentences or something. Even the judge was basically like "you don't deserve to spend the rest of your life in prison, but..." Was it a mandatory minimum thing or something?

Insane. He made a poor decision in the heat of the moment. He should get 5 years max.

Maybe this only seems overly harsh because murdering someone with a motor vehicle is normally a get out of jail free card.

A combination of mandatory minimums combined with a mandatory consecutive sentence as opposed to concurrent.

Gotta love laws that punish people for lesser crimes than those who committed more serious ones.  He absolutely deserves punishment for his error in judgement, not steering into a runaway ramp, but a mistake like that should not justify he be locked away for the rest of his natural life.

Apparently as a result of this a large number of truck drivers/companies are refusing to enter Colorado.
