The Retro/Old-School FPS Thread - update: Realms Deep 2022 trailers

I haven't seen a thread dedicated to the retro-FPS resurgence so I figured it would be good to highlight some of the amazing games in this genre from recent years.  I haven't played most of these, and the majority are PC-only at the moment.  Many will hopefully get good console ports down the line.

Project Warlock (2018)

Available on Steam, Xbox, Playstation, and Switch

Ion Fury (2019)

Available on Steam, Xbox, Playstation, and Switch

(note - the developers were chastised for including two homophobic references in the game.  One was unintentional and was removed, while another was left alone after a protracted online battle over "censorship".)

DUSK (2018)

Available on Steam, Switch port forthcoming

Amid Evil (2019)

Available on Steam, Switch port forthcoming

Prodeus (2021)

Available on Steam via Early Access, ports for Xbox, Playstation, and Switch forthcoming

ULTRAKILL (2021)

Available on Steam via Early Access

There are lots more, though many are yet to be released and are still Early Access titles.  The recent Doom and Wolfenstein games also fit this category, but are widely known AAA efforts and so I didn't think they need to be highlighted.  The Flying Wild Hog games (Hard Reset and Shadow Warrior) also fit.  What is missing?  What have you played that you really enjoyed?

I ended up beating Ion Fury twice. The other one I'm really interested in here is Prodeus. I know Dusk is supposed to be great but I really don't like that Quake 1 look, makes me not buy it every time I'm close on Steam.

DUSK is really good from what I've played, but I generally can't stand playing games on my 13" Mac, so I'm waiting for the Switch port to complete it.  The thing that seems to set it apart from other retro shooters is that the level design is pretty phenomenal.  Of the games I've played that is often the missing ingredient.

Ion Fury nailed the level design which is why I ultimately liked it enough to even replay it shortly after.

I might give Dusk a chance then, didn't realize the level design was supposed to be very good. And I agree 100%, level design is paramount in these games to me as well.

Blade of Agony (free download!)

Blade of Agony is a story-driven FPS. The project is inspired by WWII shooters from the 90's and early 2000's, like Wolfenstein 3D, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty, but with faster-paced gameplay in the spirit of Doom! The game can be played standalone using the GZDoom engine as a base.

Apocryph is an old-school fantasy shooter inspired by Hexen, Heretic, Painkiller and Strife.

Quote

Apocryph is a FPS set in a brutal dark fantasy world. It takes it's roots in old-school fantasy shooters, so prepare for intense sword-and-sorcery FPS action amidst forgotten castles, evil shrines and decrepit dungeons!

Quote

The world of Apocryph is a grim, violent place, harboring magic, dark rituals and dangers around every corner. Wherever you go you'll be facing unrelenting monsters, traps and locked passages, and can only depend on yourself and your equipment to survive the trials.

Quote

- Static, carefully handcrafted levels and level-hubs, all packed with secrets, monsters and traps.
- Your character can wield up to 9 different weapons with alternative fire modes, including melee armaments, spells, staffs and artifacts.
- Items can help you in tough situations, health potions will aid your health, mana vials can restore your mana, combat items can do some damage to an opponent.
- There are also more rare and powerful relics to be found, such as the dreaded Obliterator Mask, which encases you in a suit of nigh-impenetrable armor, allows you to bash enemies with your plain fists and send powerful shockwaves across the walls and floor, or the Essence of the Reaper, which turns you into an avatar of Death itself, boosting your speed, granting you wings to perform double jumps and a wicked scythe which cleaves and destroys any opponent.
- Some weapons and items can be used to stun enemies, freeze them solid, deal area of effect damage or even provide defensive measures.
- The game uses a sophisticated gore system. A powerful finishing blow can rip a part of the enemy right out of him, while critically over damaging an opponent literally blows them to pieces, with limbs flying across the room and sticking to the walls.

Quote

You control the Arbiter, once a person of a high rank in Xilai religious hierarchy. The Xilai were known for many things, such as their artistry, magical arts and unity. But all the worlds feared them for a different reason - the Xilai worshiped Death itself. For centuries they raided countless worlds, reaping souls in the name of their dreaded Mistress.
Events preceding the game have led to your exile, and now, after many years you return back, only to find fortresses and lands overrun with demonic spawns and vile beasts. Why were you exiled? What could cause this desolation? It's time to find some answers... and reap some demon spawn in the name of Pale Mistress.

Modern Doom clones are all the rage, but what goes into making them and where do they go next?

Quote

When Doom tore its way onto our screens in 2016, it marked a revival of 90s shooter motifs like blistering pace, charge-forward combat and a rejection of narrative and cutscenes. Its success stirred up indie developers, who saw that there may be merit in doubling down on that old-school spirit. After all, you didn’t need high production values or big budgets to recreate the splattery sprites, crude polygons and cuboid giblets that typified 90s shooters.

This retro shooter renaissance took hold in 2018, led by Dusk, Amid Evil, and Project Warlock - among others. The developers behind each game interpreted 90s shooter design in their own unique ways, finding ways to reconfigure it for an audience that, in many cases, wasn’t even born in the 90s.

Now, with all three developers working on their next projects, I figured it was a perfect time to catch up with them, reflecting on the making of their games, the zeitgeist they started, and where it’s all going to go from here.

Descend into the original Hell on Earth (Great Britain) later this month.

Arriving on September 24, Thatcher's Techbase is a free level pack for the original Doom (compatible with emulators like Boom) that sees you descend into "the tenth circle of hell—the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" in the hunt for a resurrected Margaret Thatcher.

Rip, tear, and slide in the most exciting FPS on the horizon.

Quote

You know an FPS is good when you have so many fun guns to shoot that you realize you've been neglecting your right leg, which happens to transform into a chainsaw. It's a guilt I felt constantly during my demo for Turbo Overkill, a new indie FPS bursting onto the scene with gunplay so good that Doomguy should be sweating.

Do I keep popping brains with the two standard magnums that double as Smart pistols from Titanfall? Or maybe I switch to the pump shotgun that, when right-clicked, can be triple-pumped for a huge AoE blast? The answer is, as always, to keep shooting what you're holding until you're out of ammo. It's a lesson burned into my brain by Doom Eternal, a game that feels spiritually linked to the neon-drenched cityscapes of Turbo Overkill.

Turbo Overkill, is an upcoming shooter which took Apex Legends' excellent sliding mechanics and asked, "What if we added deadly spinning blades?"

Quote

Usually, I'd assume that if a chainsaw was near someone's leg, that'd be a problem. But, when the chainsaw is embedded into your own leg and you can flick it out every time you do a butt slide, well then, it's much more of a problem for your enemies' ankles. This is exactly what you're in for with Turbo Overkill, an upcoming shooter which took Apex Legends' excellent sliding mechanics and asked, "What if we added deadly spinning blades?" I've had a chat with game director Sam Prebble and even played a little bit myself, and I think you'll like the answer.

Jim Purvis talks Boris Johnson, Hades actor Laila Berzins, One Piece, and more.

Quote

Purvis is a Scot from Coatbridge, a town just outside Glasgow. As such, there's nobody better to make a mod about mowing down hellish versions of Thatcher. Scotland faced the brunt of her time as Prime Minister so much so that even by Tory MP standards, she was unpopular. It’s no wonder then that Purvis calls Britain the ‘Tenth Circle of Hell’ in his mod. While he was born the year Thatcher stepped down, her impact was felt throughout his childhood. Techbase was a way for him to channel that hatred of Britain and Thatcher into something satirical and cathartic - she was his “eternal source of inspiration.”

After a year-long delay, Dusk is finally hitting the Nintendo Switch this month.  For those that haven't played it, it's probably the strongest of all of these retro inspired shooters, and is perfect for the season!

Don't trust your eyes.

Im half way through the second episode on this and it is VERY good. The port is perfect and the game itself is maybe best of this type of shooter even counting the classics? I need to beat it still but yeah, it’s the best fps to get on switch, counting everything.

I've given myself enough time with this game that I can safely say, recency bias aside, this is one of the best FPS games ever made.  I played a bit of it on my Mac a couple years ago, but the Switch port and it's perfect gyro controls are what helped me finally get to grips with how the game is supposed to play, and appreciate how brilliant it is in almost every respect.

Switch + Pro Controller Gyro = one of the best FPS experiences of the past several generations, and likely ever.  Anybody that likes this genre, please play this game.

I actually have this on my wishlist on Steam. I have to pick it up after getting way into Quake again.

I played the demo of this a week or so ago, and it's so ridiculous, so over the top, so 90s retro, and also very 80s synthwave as well, I loved every second of it. I can't wait for the full game to launch.
