Movies The Official "That Movie Wasn't So Bad" Thread

So I'm watching Will Smith's Gemini Man on Hulu right now and as the movie wraps up I find myself saying "Hey! That wasn't that bad!" I would have loved to have seen this int 120FPS 4K but I was doscouraged by the terrible reviews. The movie was nowhere near as bad as the critics made it out to be... kind of a hybrid of The Terminator and The Bourne Identity (to me at least). So I thought, how many other movies are out there that aren't as bad as advertised? I'll be updating this thread as I think about them/ come across them, but yeah... What say you D1P?

The story was meh by the end but hot damn the action sequences were fantastic in Gemini Man.

I mean it wasn't War and Peace, but the story did take some unexpected turns I thought. The action scenes were decent, but some of the CGI on young Wil Smith was inconsistent I thought. But the movie wasn't that bad though.

If you thought the CGI was inconsistent, then it's probably a good thing you didn't watch it at 120fps.

I really love Inherent Vice and it seems to be quite panned overall based on what I've seen. One of those movies I didn't even really like or know what to make of when I first watched it but its mood and subtext latched onto me and I ended up watching it again the same night because I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I also enjoyed this movie and it is certainly the type of movie that benefits from more than one viewing.

The movie Legend with Tom Cruise from 1985. I loved the film as a kid and still do as an adult. It didn't get good reception at all but Ridley Scott did an awesome job creating a dark fantasy film. "Darkness" aka Satan in the movie terrified me as a kid and still does. One of the scariest villains in a movie.

I think a lot of people came around to it after they released the director's cut which changes up some things including removing the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

I actually think the trailer and promo did some of that damage. It was marketed as basically The Big Lebowski but more stoner and I assume that's what people expected here, I know I basically did which is why I didn't know what to make of it initially.

I own the directors cut too and prefer Tangerine Dreams soundtrack over the new one they used.

I've apparently never seen the Director's Cut but removing the TG soundtrack seems like sacrilege.

Well they composed a soundtrack that was used in the European release that was changed for American audiences.  Sounds simlar to the blade runner thing where they had a US version and an International version.

Scott's preference was always the director's cut soundtrack, he got forced to use the TG one. I prefer the director's cut, personally.

Yea. The director's cut soundtrack is more fantasy light hearted music if I remember correctly. It's been a few years since I last saw it. 

 

TG soundtrack has a darker theme and suits the movie well imo. Regardless, I enjoyed both versions. Great childhood memories with that movie.

No lie I always looked at it like it was Dollar General Big Lebowski . Now I have to watch it.

TFTC Presents Demon Knight - A man must protect a key that carries the blood of Christ from a demon. There is gore but itsnt over the top, Billy Zane plays the demon and he really seems to be having a good time. William Saddler is protector and Jada Pinkett helps him. Its a siege movie thru and thru.

 

The People Under The Stairs- Wes Craven film about a white racist family that are slum lords that harbor some nasty secrets. A young boy breaks into in to the home to discover those secrets. Everett McGill plays a pretty vile character and does it well , its also has some good black humor in it. There is talks of a remake of the film leaning more in white slumlord vs minority that had Craven dug into would of really made the film.

The People Under The Stairs had the misfortune of being Craven's follow up to A Nightmare on Elm Street I think. It was always a solid, enjoyable movie though.

I can only speak for myself but it hit me more like a Lynch movie where I was initially kind of irritated, didn't really like it but it just wouldn't stop rolling around in my head and something about it really clung to me. It is meandering, confusing and some scenes purposely seem to not necessarily go anywhere but much like Lynch's movies, there's just that unseen overarching mood and subtext just below the surface. It strongly reminded me of the feeling of loss that's present in Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas, the book not the movie. After seeing it a few times, I'd be more inclined to call it a character study of a man lost in his own (no pun intended) memories and paranoia unable to move on.

 

It's a difficult movie told to you by an unreliable disaster of a narrator and there are a lot of genuinely funny scenes but it often shifts on a dime. It's an incredibly well-done and intelligent film about fucked up people and a paranoid era. That's my take on it but like I said, a lot of people and critics alike just thought it went nowhere and thought it sucked apparently. I think it's a really special film and I still think about it often. 

 

PS: I should add I watched it after a rather sour year of attempting to live in California so I think it worked especially well for me.

I watched this last night and it was good cheesy fun... like Evil Dead meets From Dusk Till Dawn. Billy Zane is having the time of his life and those 90's era VFX never lose their charm

I watched A Good Day to Die Hard about a month ago. Definitely a weak Die Hard movie but it was still an enjoyable generic action movie.
