  1. It's also shocking that fan favorite LeVar Burton got his chance to host during the Olympics. A shame ratings were down during his week. That puts him out of the running.
  2. And Trebek already named someone he'd want to replace him, but Mike here never even gave her a guest host spot. Video resurfaces of Trebek saying he wanted Laura Coates to replace him as ‘Jeopardy’ host NEWS.YAHOO.COM After weeks of searching for a new host of Jeopardy — an effort that included a popular petition requesting LeVar […] The post Video resurfaces of Trebek saying he wanted Laura Coates to replace him as...
  3. I was just reading about this and had considered bumping the Epic vs Apple thread. It looks like Google also offered up search profits from phone manufacturers in exchange for them not including other app stores on their phones.
  4. The FTC has refiled, but with a more targeted lawsuit... FTC: Facebook was bad at business, so it “illegally bought or buried” competition ARSTECHNICA.COM FTC chair Lina Khan cast deciding vote in decision to refile. This sounds better than their previous case. Also, I love the detail that Facebook bought Onavo, a VPN service, specifically to track its users and figure out which competitors they needed to squash.
  5. I would, but my wife is a teacher working at the sister school my son is registered to attend. She's actually in a position to make a change here. Sucks that most parents aren't. I mentioned earlier in this thread, but last year as a special needs teacher my wife ran into so many kids that were misplaced. Kids that were "nonverbal autistic", but are actually perfectly fluent in Spanish. The district isn't required to actually staff any non-English speakers and placement tests are given in English. On top of that, Massachusetts is really strict with teaching requirements, so it can often be really hard to get into the profession unless you have the necessary money to throw at the licensing and testing. That's sometimes hard to come by when you're looking at immigrants or first generation native speakers. My wife was, literally, the only minority teacher in her school that was 50% non-white. Let's see how the new school she's heading to looks like. I should mention, my wife has many years down as a special needs therapist, her bachelor's in early childhood education and is licensed by the state to provide therapy to kids and adults with autism and other more severe mental disabilities. Ignore all that, if it weren't for the temporary relaxing of teacher licensing standards that were put in place because COVID caused huge numbers of teachers to just up and retire, she wouldn't have qualified because her college wasn't on the list of colleges she could go to to become a teacher in this state.
  6. How about some personal systemic racism for a change of pace? My son is five and registered for kindergarten. He has a mild learning disability that primarily affects language. He can talk, but it's very difficult for him to put sentences together so he mostly just strings related words together with no care for grammar. He also has trouble pronouncing words. When registering him for school, we included this diagnosis from his neurologist. We listed English as the language spoken at home and the only language he knows and understands. However, because we listed his ethnicity as Hispanic, the schools decided to put him in an ESL class as primarily Spanish speaking. This is in spite of us knowing they'd try to pull this and bringing him to an in person evaluation with one of the district's pathologists to make sure people understand that his speech impediment is real and this isn't a case of him only speaking Spanish...you know, because we assumed the letter from his neurologist wouldn't be enough. None of it matters, because we just got a letter telling us he's still going to get enrolled in an ESL class where the teacher will speak primarily Spanish and he'll have no idea what the hell she's saying. My wife is already on the phone with the school's principal raising hell.
  7. Nope. Just different business models. Webtoons mostly relies on ad revenue, so the bulk of their current catalog is free. The ads come at the end of the comic, before you get into comments. Webtoons does a lot to try to foster a community among its readers, so higher engagement from your readers comes with bigger perks. They also have this Fast Pass where there's the current chapter that's free to everyone and then another 3-5 chapters you can buy for 50¢ each. This works best for serial series since knowing the continuation of a good cliff hanger is only a couple of quarters away is a fairly good incentive to pony up for it. Comixology is mostly focused on digital issues that cost about the same as print. They also have a $5.99 monthly subscription that grants you access to a library of comics.
  8. Why Your Team Sucks 2021: New England Patriots | Defector DEFECTOR.COM Look at you now, Pats fans. You never meant a fucking thing to your favorite QB. Your team is nothing now. You are nothing. You’re so anonymous you belong in the AFC South. You’re not even fit for... I hate that nothing here is wrong and I still think that maybe Belichick is a great coach. He's really good at managing really good players, which I guess is better than the vast majority of skid marks we call NFL coaches.
  9. DC Characters Are Coming to Webcomics Through Deal With Webtoon VARIETY.COM DC characters will be featured in several upcoming webcomics series, through a new deal between WarnerMedia's DC and Webtoon. Looks like DC is going to work on some new series from their existing properties that they'll distribute through Webtoons. If you aren't familiar with Webtoons, it's got to be the biggest dedicated digital comic distributor out there. Their user base is some 100 million readers, many of whom are actually willing to pay for individual chapters. I can't think of anyone with a larger reader base outside of probably like Amazon, Apple, and Google. They mainly deal with indie comics, Japanese manga, and Korean manhwa. I think their most high profile franchise was a great Star Wars comic that ran a number of years back that Disney has since pulled from the platform. That said, they've had some breakout hits, some of which have received anime adaptation like Tower of God on Crunchyroll or live action series like Sweet Home on Netflix. It'll be interesting to see how far this goes. Webtoons and their vertical scrolling comics is easily the best way to read comics on a mobile device. Some of my favorites comics are the ones that make great use of the verticality like Hellper or Gosu. I'll keep an eye out for these when they start to land.
  10. In Windows 10 there's an option under taskbar settings called "Combine taskbar buttons". If you allow Windows to not collapse taskbar items, you'll get the icon plus the app name like was the default in Windows XP and prior.
  11. I took her comment to mean that he's lying, but it would be hilarious if he actually did fight Cap at some point in time and EVERYONE, including the people behind the movie, all thought he was lying. That's basically where I stand. He's most likely lying, but if it turned out that Cap popped up in the wrong timeline for some crazy reason and they got into a fight, it would be pretty damn funny.
  12. If you can uninstall notepad and paint then that's already a good step toward simplifying the OS. Neither of those should have been treated as a core part of the OS. Seems like Cortana is also now another app and not a core part of the OS.
  13. Sure, but also Shortland AND Harbour thinks he's just told the lie for so long he now believes it to be true. Black Widow director on what’d happen if Red Guardian met Cap: ‘I WWW.SYFY.COM In the latest MCU film Black Widow, David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov, aka the Red Guardian, likes to share tales with whomever will listen (and whomever wishes to arm wrestle the guy) about that... Shortland hedges saying that it wouldn't be too crazy if he actually was telling the truth, though.
  14. It's just the text next to an app's icon in the taskbar. I never turn them on because I either have so few things open that I already know each app or I have too many open that they get truncated anyway.
  15. He just seems like the type that turned bragging about being able to beat Cap in a fight to bragging about beating Cap in a fight. He even gets called out for it when he's talking about it in prison.
  16. Yeah, there was no timeline tomfoolery. Alexei never fought Cap, he was just crazy.
  17. No VR games really do it for me that way. I want a VR game that gives me a world to get lost in. Alyx was really good, but it's also basically a corridor shooter.
  18. Earthbound, just for the ending. I still maintain that going into that blind was one of the best gaming experiences ever.
  19. All this talk about third doses and I'm wondering what to do as a J&J recipient on my single dose.
  20. That's because... Marvel’s Shang-Chi will come to Disney Plus 45 days after theatrical release WWW.POLYGON.COM Unlike Black Widow, Shang-Chi will kick off in theaters only
  21. Texas driver shot dead after crashing vehicle, firing at 3 who came to her aid: report WWW.YAHOO.COM A Texas driver ended up dead Wednesday night after crashing her vehicle and then firing shots at three people who tried to come to her aid, according to a report. Woman crashes her car while speeding; three come to help her; she shoots all three, killing one of them; another passerby shoots and kills her to protect those Good Samaritans. The two that weren't killed are in critical condition. This is about as American a story you could find.
  22. Cool. So basically, the election wasn't overturned because a bunch a few folks in the DOJ didn't want to go through the hassle of hiring a bunch of attorneys to replace every one that would have quit.
  23. There could be many religious objections to the mRNA vaccines, but I doubt there are many, if any, real religious objections to the J&J.
