The trailer for Lamb elicited a collective, audible "WTF?!?" in my theater

It's like they added that trailer just to let me know "Nope, The Lighthouse and the Green Knight aren't peak A24 just yet...". I really hope it's supposed to be as funny as it looks because everyone was dying laughing, which I've rarely seen at my local place.

I chugged a big cup of strong coffee before going to my 6:10PM screening of this movie, and still struggled to stay awake. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a movie that could be described as "dream-like". My own dreams are shitty enough. I don't need to watch a whole movie of someone else's. There are some undeniably rad visuals. Enough for a couple awesome music videos (or movie trailers), but not enough to sustain a two hour movie. I have no idea what the fuck was happening for the majority of this movie, and I would love for someone to try and explain it to me, but please wait a couple of hours (that's my bedtime).

But I suppose it's my fault for not reading the book ancient poem first.

The issue isn't that it's dream-like, the issue is that the flow and pacing are the film equivalent of some ancient dude on a city bus trying to tell you his war story. You're excited to hear it but he's 90 and can't remember half the shit, then the bus doors start screeching so you don't hear a sentence, then he has to start a whole segment over. By the end you don't care anymore and just hope your stop is next.

The movie was always going to be a dreamscape surreal journey ala Alejandro Jodorowsky or Nicolas Winding Refn. The question is whether it does it well - critics seem to think so but I gotta see it and find out for myself.

I pre-ordered the first El Topo/Holy Mountain DVD box release actually, I just remembered that. Haven't seen those in ages but they were great when I was smoking a shitload of weed still

They are great sober, interesting drunk, and amazing on drugs. You should re-watch, they are gorgeous in 4K UHD.

Yeah, don't listen to me on movies like this. They simply aren't for me. I keep trying, hoping that maybe they'll eventually click with me...

Oh of course, that's the key! Drugs!

Hahaha I like weird, surreal movies sober but drugs do always help!

I get that certain genres aren't for everyone. I've met people who don't even like sci-fi or fantasy, straight up. Surreal, dream logic movies are certainly going to test a person's patience and suspension of disbelief. But for me, I luxuriate in the tone, imagery, music, and atmosphere. Like Dark Souls, I like trying to parse out the esoteric meanings of the metaphors laced throughout the dream logic narrative.

Stuff like Beyond the Black Rainbow, Mandy, Only God Forgives, films from the likes of Tarkovsky, Malick, Audiard, Refn, Lynch, and Jodorowsky - I love them. But most people get bored, confused, or both. So I do understand.

Kind of baffled by the takes in this thread, feel like I watched something entirely different than y’all. It’s not some lethargic slog; fairly packed with incident and moves at a decent clip continuously. Everything hangs together thematically and plays off the concepts of integrity and self-respect, and other than putting a little bit of English on it (one might say a little too much at times), Lowery’s going for a very conventional structure and format with a bit of a modernist bent (those be some nifty intertitles!) Don’t go in expecting Jodorowsky or Winding Refn or something “out there”, I don’t think that’s an apt comparison (MAYBE Drive, but even then, not really.)

Anyway, I dug it for the most part. The ending is what really clinched it for me, and struck me emotionally. I know that might sound “too little, too late” for some, but if a movie can keep me reasonably engaged and knocks me on my ass with a finale, I consider that a win.

Lowery and Lanthimos know how to use Barry Keoghan to perfection, and I love to see it.

I actually didn't think it was terribly 'weird', nor surreal, either, especially compared to El Topo or something of that ilk.

So my wife knows I wanted to see this, and she surprised me with tickets for tomorrow.

She doesn't do arthouse films. Is she going to regret her decision? She also gets bored at epic fantasies like LotR. So maybe this being the opposite of that will work in her favor.

This sounds like the time I was forced to go see Superhero Movie #897 because half my gym broz went. This is her worst nightmare haha

I kid though...who knows, she might like it. I've seen/played/read/listened to plenty of things I hated on paper and ended up loving.

The first thing she said coming out of the movie, "I hated every minute of it". Lol, as expected. But this was her idea so I don't feel so bad, and she always enjoys being at the Alamo regardless of what we see.

As for me, I really enjoyed it. Didn't love it, certainly didn't hate it. I was never bored though or felt like the pacing was plodding along. I guess my biggest problem is his quest to reach the Green Knight didn't really feel purposeful or even that eventful. I know there's a lot of symbolism there that I haven't had time to digest, but there wasn't really much development in terms of plot or character.

And I totally agree with @Zeluge, the ending was masterful. From the second he reached the Green Chapel I was enthralled all the way through to the credits. Obviously the big hook of the film is what's going to happen when he meets the Green Knight again. And I think when the whole movie kind of hinges on this moment, you build up an expectation in your mind that is almost impossible to meet, but honestly I think he completely nailed it and my expectations were far exceeded.

Yes, that's correct - it's all up for your interpretation!

That…irritates me greatly. I’m all for artistic license but it’s an already great story with a great twist/moral. It’s literally timeless. Chopping off the true ending so people can “interpret for themselves” just comes across as pretentious.

Well, it’s possible the true ending will come out as dlc later.

I disagree. When you're adapting a story that everyone is familiar with I don't think it's necessary to play it straight the whole time and stay true to the source. And besides, they already show that Morgan la Fay is behind it all from the first 5 minutes of the film. Whereas that's one of the reveals in the poem at the end.

And really, I think we saw everything we needed to see starting from the flashback and to when he decided to remove the waist band. The whole movie shows him as not a very honorable knight, and the flashback shows his life had he remained deceitful and a coward. Revealing the protective sash he had and removing it, Gawain was able to become the honorable knight he set out on his quest to be. I think whether the Green Knight killed him or not is irrelevant thematically.

  • 2 weeks later...

I caught this in theaters a few weeks ago while it was still playing. I was busy with moving at the time so I forgot to post my thoughts. But I just wanted to say that this movie is a masterpiece and easily the best thing I've seen in theaters for at least a couple of years.

I hadn't read the poem since college so unfortunately some of the deeper messages were lost on me at the moment, but damn, the movie just worked on a pure emotional level for me from start to finish. The alternate reality sequence at the end really got to me. This is a perfect example of a story with a simple message of morality being told effectively in a way that never feels cheesy or didactic. And on a sensory level this movie sent me on a trip and put my head in a very unique space. I'm really glad I saw it on a big screen because a few of those sequences really needed the big screen to pop as well as they did. I literally jumped when I first saw the giants.

Such a great fucking movie. FUCK!
