I was bothered too much by how the water didn't move when he walked through it.

Attention to details like interacting with the world are things no one cares about anymore. Horizon Zero Dawn felt like your character was basically on an overlay laid on top of the world and everyone thought it was the most amazing looking game ever... despite the fact that you had almost zero influence on anything. I personally hate worlds that go to great lengths to get texture and shadow details but can't be bothered to have water move or splash when you move in it, or you shoot arrows into the water and they act like it's not there, or an explosion goes off and nothing is moved by it at all except for enemies.

It's this shallow level of detail that people should call out, but rarely do. Because hey the sunsets look good so that's what matters!

We live in a post-RDR2 world. It's time to look at games more critically.

RDR2 had some pretty good world interaction, but had the alternate problem of them spending so long making horse nuts that they forgot no one likes 11 frames of input lag just to start a slow saunter.

Ancestors is likely going to be a polarizing game, but it's something so out of the ordinary than what you've come accustomed to in either the survival or third person open world genre, that it's worth a look.

So far, I have put about six hours total into the game between both sessions. I am very excited to learn how to weild a weapon to kill predators, and to explore more into the jungle. This has been a really unique and challenging experience, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. You can get Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey on PC via the Epic Games store on August 27th, and for PS4 and Xbox One in December of 2019. It's currently retailing for $39.99

Ancestors is a fantastic translation of evolutionary concepts into a game. It presents a fully-realized world that forces you to pay attention to every last detail if you want to survive.

Shacknews - 8 / 10

Although a great game, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey falls short of perfection.

Worth Playing - 8 / 10

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is far from being a title that the mainstream crowd could easily pick up and play. Technical aspects, like the wonky camera and uninviting controls, can be overcome with time, but the camera system and lack of any direction are enough to turn off most people. Stick with it through multiple restarts, however, and you'll discover a title that has loads of fulfilling moments and deep characters you'll get attached to, despite a lack of understandable speech. Games have rarely done something like this, and that fact is amplified when you look at the scope this is trying to cover. If you're looking for a survival title that feels different and distinct, give Ancestors a look.

It'll be an acquired taste, but for those who have the patience for its deliberate opaqueness, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is the type of game its fans will be playing on and off for months, if not years. Its challenging nature makes it equal parts compelling and frustrating, but there's no question this smart survival adventure contains loads of rewards for persistent players.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is like no survival game I’ve played before.

IGN Spain - Spanish - 8 / 10

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a risky, brave and immense game. Evolution as the key to everything. A huge and difficult experience just like life.

Screen Rant - 4 / 5 stars

Quote

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a rebellious game about human evolution, replete with challenge and storytelling opportunities of bare survival.

PCWorld - 4 / 5 stars

Quote

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an impossibly ambitious game, attempting to summarize the whole of human evolution into the span of a few hours—and succeeding to a surprising degree.

Softpedia - 8 / 10

Ancestors is not a perfect game, and I think it could have benefited from another six months in development. But the overall scope and reach of the game make playing it worthwhile. I hope the developers will let people know more about some of the mechanics used, like the weird mini-map, because players will want to know.Weirdly, I feel ready, somehow, to be left alone in a jungle.

PC Invasion - 4 / 5 stars

Ancestors is a great step forward for the survival genre. It has all the pieces you'd expect, including water and food requirements but also a few unique ones. All of these tie into the game in a much better way than in most other survival games. Plus, its narrative of guiding humankind through its early evolution in prehistoric Africa makes for a great story to play in a beautiful place to do it.

Hardcore Gamer - 4 / 5

Yet despite its complicated objectives, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey challenges players to think outside the box by using contemporary, evolved knowledge to survive in a prehistoric world.

PowerUp! - 7.8 / 10

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an interesting game and experiment. It might not be for everyone, but if you give it a chance, your enjoyment may just evolve along with your family of apes.

Hobby Consolas - Spanish - 76 / 100

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a fresh take on the survival genre, one that takes us through the steps of human evolution, but falls short of its potential with a gameplay loop that becomes monotonous really soon.

IGN Italy - Italian - 7.5 / 10

Quote

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is one of the most interesting survival games I've played in the last few years. With very interesting mechanics and a gameplay capable of evolving together with the brains of the apes, Ancestors lets us experience the struggles of the human evolution. Unfortunately cumbersome controls and a difficulty that easily leds to frustration partially ruin the experience.

Gamersky - Chinese - 7.5 / 10

Despite some repeated combat and the boring management system, it's fun to play as a gorilla and explore jungles.

Cerealkillerz - German - 7.5 / 10

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an interesting Title with a fascinating Setting and an exciting micromanagement, but due to his repetitive character, the game blocks itself from turning into a potential hit. Friends of survival adventures, who want to have a unique setting, should give the title a try because of the motivating generations-system.

Everyeye.it - Italian - 7.2 / 10

Ancestors is anything but a traditional product.

MSPoweruser - 7 / 10

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a different kind of survival game, one that's ambition sees it continually ride a fine line between being enthralling and infuriating. To refine 10 million years of human history into roughly 50 or so hours of playtime (providing your clan survives) is a staggering feat, for sure, but some mechanics are so abstract that it'll leave certain players at a loss. Providing you have the patience for it, however, Ancestors can be a rewarding trip throughout human evolution.

If Panache can squash most of the bugs, this could be a Game of the Year contender. As is, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is still well worth monkeying about with and I know I’ll be coming back for more.

CGMagazine - 7 / 10

A survival game that feels like a puzzle and plays a bit awkwardly. Overall, a brain-burning but enjoyable experience.

IGN - 7 / 10

In Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, survival is easy once you decipher the basic mechanics of evolution and sit through the cutscenes, but the journey is full of moments of discovery.

Cultured Vultures - 6.5 / 10

The early joy of discovery in Ancestors is betrayed by repetitive gameplay vignettes that feel like serious work before long.

GameWatcher - 6.5 / 10

An interesting experience that will divide players.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is something of an oddity. The game has a lot of depth to uncover and problems to overcome, but with a difficulty curve like a brick wall, many players will end up walking away in frustration. For those with the patience of a mountain, this is worth checking out, as the lush environments are beautiful to behold, and many  fascinating discoveries wait to be made and passed on down the generations.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an ambitious take on the survival genre that is hampered by poor design choices

My most confident recommendation of Ancestors goes to casual gamers

Guiding a clan of primates through generations as they evolve certainly makes for a unique experience, and there are times when Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey comes together. But a lack of guidance on basic gameplay mechanics, as well as some clumsy controls and unsuccessfully executed ideas, make for a highly uneven game.

PC Gamer - 58 / 100

A novel premise wrapped in an awkward and repetitive survival slog.

GameCrate - 5.8 / 10

A:THO ignores the mechanical DNA that make open world games and survival RPGs so much fun. There's nothing revolutionary about depriving you of map functionality and an adequate tutorial. This isn't an evolution so much as a freak mutation that will die off in the wild. There are other games that achieve what A:THO attempts; play them instead.

Game Informer - 5.5 / 10

Moments of beauty and distantly spaced moments of sublime discovery are separated by hours and hours of tedium and frustration

Press Start - 5 / 10

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an ambitious game whose conceptual vision is the very thing that bogs it down. There's a lot of unexplained expectations of the player, and, by the time those are worked out, it's easy to become bored or frustrated with it. Very likely, both. Combined with abundant technical problems, there isn't a lot to praise about Ancestors and even less to recommend.

Wccftech - 5 / 10

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey was such an interesting idea on paper but from its complex and unexplained environment to the severe lack of exciting objectives and goals to work towards, the game doesn't quite manage to entice the player to make the very best of humanity.

GamesRadar+ - 2.5 / 5 stars

A bright idea made dull by constant repetition and diminishing rewards.

For every cool "a-ha!" moment in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, there has been something that has me on the verge of rage quitting. There's a fascinating, novel concept in Ancestors, but with so many bugs and other tedious issues blocking it, the joy of this survival game feels like it's constantly kept millions of years and a bundle of evolutionary feats away.

GameSpot - 4 / 10

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an unfulfilling survival game, one that never provides a compelling reason to see its journey all the way through.

Eurogamer - No Recommendation / Blank

Ancestors is ambitious and clunky and not much fun - and it's often quietly thought-provoking too.

Overcome the difficult initial impressions and Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey turns out to be a rather engaging and fun survival game.
