We watched the three part mini-series Black Narcissus. The BBC secures content that you could argue is the highest quality of any broadcaster. This series does not he’ll that argument. 3/10 - maybe a bit more - but it just didn’t work well.

Watch the original 1947 film the series is based on. Its one of the best looking films of all times and is so much better acted then the series.

HOST (2020) - 4/5

i saw this on Shudder. it’s not even an hour long and the whole thing takes place on a zoom call. and it’s REALLY GOOD. legitimately got me scared multiple times. it IS a jump scare movie which i normally don’t care for but i felt like it was done pretty well here. i imagine this was made on a really cheap budget, so well done to those who worked on this. i think this is something that i’ll revisit at some point.

@Greatoneshere @Keyser_Soze

So if I remember correctly, we had a conversation on here once about me checking out some Hayao Miyazaki films and I finally got around to watching Spirited Away last night. My girlfriend is apparently quite the fan of his work and some other anime in general so this is my first real exposure to any of it and it's been a ton of fun. But anyway, regarding Spirited Away specifically, I loved it and I see why it's so beloved. It's exactly what I needed during the holidays. Also can't wait to check out more of his movies now and will go for Princess Mononoke next.

I dunno. I think we discussed watching Satoshi Kon. The discussion that is in the Satoshi Kon thread. :p

But you can't go wrong with Miyazaki or Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away!

Yup, that was it. My Perfect Blue viewing. I know I learned about Miyazaki here as well so I thought it might've been you and/or GreatOne

I watched some episodes of Food Wars with her and thought the sheer absurdity of it was hilarious. I'm actually psyched to see more of that goofiness.

Yeah, there's a genre of shows like Food Wars (Food Wars is peak of that genre, hence why its good). But while there's a lot of great anime out there (including in the good zany/goofy way) there's even more bad anime out there which take those things too far or too silly or lack depth. But Miyazaki and Food Wars are a great start!

Yeah it's funny as hell, I was really surprised by my reaction. I also watched an episode of Kill La Kill but found it really obnoxious and draining to watch. It seems like it's cool and fun but it felt like snorting two lines and having someone scream in my face for 20 minutes.

Kill la Kill is basically acid anime - the studio and director who made Kill la Kill is known for that style (also did mech anime Gurren Lagaan). I think you'll enjoy Kill la Kill when you have watched more anime, I wouldn't consider that a gateway one.

You could watch Gurren Lagann same studio essentially but a little bit toned down on the madness. But still amazing!

I was thinking about this the other day...my favorite Japanese movie is probably Kwaidan. I absolutely love the atmosphere and the dark folklore. Is there anything anime-wise somewhat in that vein? Not a copy or anything but I was curious if there's something I should check out if I'm into those aspects.

There is! It's a very episodic, folklore-esque Japanese set of stories called Mushishi. It's a beautiful show with a few seasons. Will definitely give you what you want in the atmospheric Japanese folklore stories respect.

And Gurren Lagaan is really good, but you have to be a fan of that style first.

Just googled it and that looks very cool yeah, thanks man. Also reminded myself to order the Blu-Ray of Kwaidan which I just did. Win-win.

By the way, this has been bugging me since I saw it, or well, at least been on my mind.

What do you guys make of the last scene in Spirited Away? How much time has passed do you guys think? Does the building simply look different etc. because that's the actual real world building and the red facade and statue were really just 'illusions' of sorts planted by the spirit world to lure them in? Then there's the comment about dust all over the car. My gut reaction was that some massive amount of time has passed and it gave me a really sad feeling but I'm not sure that was the intent at all considering the car started normally and all.

My personal interpretation is that it all happened, time has passed long enough for a bunch of leaves to fall on the car (so a day or two) and that the passage of time in the spirit world matches that of the real world, so a few days pass in the spirit world so probably a few days passed in the real world. The statue, I believe, indicates the border between the two realms where you enter. I'm sure casting magic and illusions is part of its role, but seeing as the parents were also susceptible, it's real in the sense it's all happening, at least to me.

Thinking about it more I assumed that it meant the spirit world kind of disguised the actual facade as the train station to make it seem more alluring. However, I don't think anyone comments on it looking entirely different despite noticing the leaves having grown if I remember right? Also, the stone marker now doesn't have a face anymore and is just a regular stone. So I'm wondering whether the more 'magical' look and the face initially were a sort of invitation before you see its real world look at the end once the spirit world has been left behind?

I also kept getting the sense a lot of time was passing while she was working considering her memory loss etc. but my girlfriend mentioned that was probably just the spells working on her and her name having been taken.

I think you're right in that magic is playing a major role in disguising the spirit world realm for sure. And I believe the parents remark on all the stuff that's now on their car. Beyond that, more time could have passed than we think, I just meant it doesn't take long for branches and leaves to fall onto a car and pile up. There could have been edits/montages indicating more passage of time than we think, though I believe the parents as pigs were on a time limit or they'd be permanently turned into pigs. I've seen the movie a lot, but it's been a bit since my last viewing.

It's important to remember a lot of anime, particularly magical anime, work on dream logic and fantasy logic. Meaning, unlike American and European mythologies which tend to be much more stratified and labeled, etc, anime just does what it wants when it wants and there are rarely established rules to how their worlds function. So you probably won't find anything concrete because often it's left open ended because anime creators don't often seem to care about hardlining explanations for magical shit. It's often implied or left up to you to fill in the blanks. Except for mystery box anime, most anime don't even bother with the exposition required to even explain shit. Miyazaki almost never bothers.

Weird, but Japan is simply a much more spiritual nation rather than "organized" religion and their anime often comes off that way too, ethereal and random rather than proper Bible book explanations for things.

I think part of the trick of Spirited Away is that there aren't "correct" answers to some of this. I don't think Miyazaki himself would be able to tell you exactly how much time has passed, either in the spirit world or the real world, or if time is different between the two.

It does make me think about the movers they hired. How long do they sit in their truck, waiting for the family to arrive? Do they just unload all of their shit in the front porch after a few hours? Do they wait a day or two and file a missing persons report?

Oh I completely agree with both your posts, I just like reading theories. It's something I love about Lynch movies for example as well. I like the sleuthing and the way it sticks in my mind for a week after each viewing like some unsolved puzzle that I want to hear others' takes on. I never look for an explanation, I know it's not there, but I like to see what other people think.

The main reason really is that some scenes left a huge impression on me and that rarely happens anymore. The train scene and the ending both almost made me cry but the latter also keeps rolling around in my head because I was completely expecting the car not to start or for the film to show their empty, overgrown home next based on the emotional cues (not really the right term but still).

I'm all for speculating and theories! Glad you're feeling motivated - giving anime a chance is a great thing. :)

Oh yeah, nothing wrong with theories and speculation. I think my experience getting heavily invested in Lost as it aired somewhat burned me on trying to look too closely at certain things. I hit the tipping point where trying to “solve” the thing left me incapable of actually enjoying the thing.

THE GENTLEMEN 3.25/5

ok I thought a few times it was turning into a Lincoln commercial with inner monologue continued into verbal statements from Mr. alright, alright, alright himself. Typical Guy Ritchie movie with jumps in story telling (but not as aggressive) causing some confusion now and then. Hugh Grant I’m starting to like more and more as I get older as an actor. I only recently saw most of Notting Hill (I liked) Love, Actually and was great in Paddington 2. Here he is playing just a scumbag but a delightful one that was fun to watch dance between mostly his narrative of the movie events. Plus, I would really love to try that Super Skunk x White Widow weed he was bragging about throughout the movie. Thankfully  my American Pie strain was up for the task, which is a White Widow x Power Plant crossed strain and its amazing
