No flaws show thru, Kubrick was a master set designer and the The Overlook feels even more encompassing then ever.

I just dont think Kubrick was good with the horror genre. We have a FUBAR family from the start, each incident is that happens to them gets more fucked up but nothing ever really happens because of it. Danny's continued visions of murder and blood are fruitless because there is no reaction from him other singular moments of being scared but after each escalating hes back to "normal". Hes already fucked up and taking it in stride and so is the viewer. Jacks decent is so shallow that each moment he loses his himself to the hotel has less and less of impact . Then there is the "nigger" moment which feels like Kubrick trying to shoe horn in a racist under tone to the film but outside 1 very shallow remark in the beginning of the film is never really present.Last but not least is the spooky skeleton scene with Wendy, it honestly feels like Kubricks big Fuck You to horror fans.

Each  scary moment in that film taken individually are great but collectively they fall flat.

Well that makes sense. I've seen it continuously throughout my life since I was a kid and somehow never really broke it down like that. I've always judged it based on its ability to thoroughly make me unease and fill me with dread like few others, I never really thought about what some of these moments even mean come to think of it. Rather weird thinking about it now. The sudden racist moment in the bathroom I always simply attributed to a little "trick" to further rattle you as a viewer I suppose.

I've also been meaning to watch that wacko documentary about all the fan conspiracies and shit, looks entertaining.

Boys Don't Cry (1999)

I completely unexpectedly saw this on one of HBO's channels two nights ago not even intending to watch a full movie at the time of night. I have a real soft spot for "white trash life on the prairie" type of cinema so that theme mixed with some very moody cinematography and lighting immediately had me unable to change the channel. To make a long story short, I'm not sure when the last time even was that I completely ignored my bed time, anything around me and was at the edge of my seat engrossed in a movie I randomly happened to stumble onto on TV.

An incredibly stark and affecting film with performances so good you forget it's not real. It was just played and written so fucking well with no overblown dramatics, no cheesy monologues, no evil-for-the-sake-of-evil characters...even those are fleshed-out and thoroughly explored. Some scenes veered into David Lynch-ish lighting and stylistic touches without seeming superfluous or forced but instead as a visual extension of its mood and massive emotional charge.

This movie has been on my mind ever since and I had to recommend it here for those who haven't seen it. I honestly don't have a single negative thing to say about it so it's a 10/10.

Preacher season 4, final season

Stuck to its weirdness throughout the entire series, start of this season kind of meandered around.

6.5/10

GLOW season 3

Only a couple characters really got any development this season and the overall plot was just kind of there. Definitely the weakest of the seasons.

6/10

Barry Lyndon - I got a Blu Ray box set of Stanley Kubrick movies a couple years ago, and this was the one I didn't know at all. At around 1 hour and 40 minutes into a 3 hour movie, the narrator says "to make a long story short..."  which made me laugh pretty hard. I dunno. I read about how it was shot in new and innovative ways, and it does look great, but there were long stretches where I found myself looking at my phone and not feeling bad about it.

Mindhunter season 1 and 2

Really solid series overall. Bill Tench is my spirit animal with grumpy professionalism. Thought season 1 was better than 2.

8.5/10

Season 1 is razor sharp while Season 2 felt lopsided, unfocused and messy until the latter half when Atlanta really finally got going. S1 is pretty much a 10/10 for me.

Undone

One of the most unique shows I have ever seen, it is less than 3 hours long total, watch it. Great dialogue and characters that feels authentic even when the scenarios are bizarre.

9.5/10

The Art of Self-defense

I have no idea what genre this movie qualifies as, dark comedy I guess would be the best way to describe it. Some good stuff in there, nothing amazing though.

7/10

Definitely want to see both of these. I heard The Art of Self-Defense is a really good film about bullying and toxic masculinity? Sounds intriguing.

I watched Undone because of this and I agree it’s a fantastic little show.

Great director so I'd be surprised if it was flat out bad.

I do agree with that, I loved The Haunting of Hill House. I still somehow found the Doctor Sleep trailer to be somehow even less inspiring than that lame-ass Pet Sematary remake so I just had to rip on it here because I saw it like one minute prior I can't control myself.

The trailer is bad (I agree with you there), but reviews are coming out now saying Doctor Sleep is pretty good. Trailers aren't a great barometer of the quality of a film, the behind the scenes crew and actors (their past resumes) typically are the best demonstrable metrics to use.

Btw, totally unrelated but I'm gonna go see The Lighthouse tonight.

So I just saw The Shining for the first time. Really was unimpressed with it. I didn't hate it, but it lacks the depth of the book.

exactly. Jack's character is so much more complex than is shown.  Believe it or not the mini-series with Steven Weber and Rebecca what's her name (porn girl turned actress) isn't half bad. No masterpiece but it definitely sticks more to the book.

I'm just really glad I took your advice and read the book. I ordered Doctor Sleep, so I'll get around to that before I watch the new movie.

Now I'm a bit torn on watching the second season of Castle Rock before I read Misery. I know it's not based off the book, but it has the villain from it and I'm wondering if I'd appreciate it more if I read the book first.

Misery is fantastic, and the movie is actually dang good as well. Kathy Bates completely nailed Annie Wilkes. Pretty sure she got the Oscar for that one.

Oh, I'm definitely reading the book before watching the movie. I just try to alternate the types of books I read, so I don't get burnt out on one genre.

Love Kathy Bates, too.

While I don't disagree with you actually, I do think the movie does a tremendous job of relaying the characters' histories in their actual performances and minutiae of behavior. I especially love Shelley Duvall. Then again, a lot of people don't agree with that opinion and the movie was harshly criticized for being "cold" upon release from what I know.

Overall, it's a much different animal than the book I think and I absolutely love both. The TV film/mini-series is corny as fuck despite being way closer to the book.

Edit: And yeah, Misery is really good.

I can see why you'd say that, but you have to remember when it was made. Network tv wasn't going to allow anything too edgy, but I appreciate it sticking closer to the book. I'd love to see a cable network redo a miniseries that could really do that book justice.

I actually saw it when it came out and was super excited for it but it was shockingly corny even then. The child actor is a disaster, the effects are unintentionally hilarious (the hedges coming alive, dear lord) and on and on.

Many of King's stories would be served so incredibly well with limited mini-series as has been so super popular. It'd be a gold mine in my opinion.

Oh, god, Shelly Duvall was the worst part of the movie. They turned her into a weak-willed, submissive scream bag.
