It was a chaotic box office weekend as "Spider-Verse 2" and "Elemental" battled for first, "The Flash" crumbled and "No Hard Feelings" opened.

Over the weekend, “The Flash” suffered a brutal 73% decline in its second weekend with $15.3 million from 4,265 North American theaters. That’s a far bigger drop than recent DC adaptations like “Black Adam” (59%) and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” (69%), which ended up as notable money losers for the studio.

In the case of “The Flash,” it’s a catastrophic result for the $200 million-budgeted tentpole because it signals that ticket sales won’t rebound in its theatrical run. So far, the film has generated a lousy $87 million at the domestic box office and $123.3 million internationally, bringing the worldwide total to $210.9 million.

Overall, it’s a chaotic weekend at the box office as Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” returned to the No. 1 spot (in its fourth weekend of release, no less) with a mighty $19.3 million. It’s rare that a film returns to the top of charts this far into its theatrical run, especially in the heat of summer movie season. So far, “Across the Spider-Verse” has generated $316 million in North America and $560 million globally.

The “Spider-Verse” sequel narrowly beat out Disney and Pixar’s animated “Elemental,” which remained in second place with $18.5 million. That brings its domestic tally to $65 million and global total to $121 million. Ticket sales in its sophomore outing were stronger than anticipated, dropping only 37% from the prior weekend. Unfortunately for “Elemental,” it landed (by far) the worst start in modern history for Pixar. So it’ll need to remain the de facto choice for family audiences to justify its $200 million price tag and restore a little confidence in the Pixar brand.

This signals word-of-mouth is good for Elemental, but The Flash... my goodness.

JLaw's face looks different, did she get some work done?

Every fucking female in the industry has gotten work done. It's so gross and it makes these women look like dolls. Big lips, big cheeks etc. It's actually comical to see the results.

I knew Flash wasn't going to redeem the Snyderverse and be a box office smash, but I didn't expect it to crash and burn this hard. It was mediocre and didn't deserve to make a billion dollars or anything, but I didn't think it would struggle to make $100M domestic.

Ezra Miller's The Flash is doing critical damage to the DC brand and Warner Bros.' bank account.

Box office analyst Luiz Fernando recently observed that if The Flash's poor performance keeps up, it will lead the film to lose Warner Bros. more than $200 million.

Fernando mentioned that The Flash's hefty $150 promotional budget may not even be recouped by box office earnings, and WB would've "lost less money releasing it on Max or not releasing it at all."

They can't release the movie because it was deleted from the company’s servers when they received the tax write-off.

There's hard copies that exist SOMWHERE. I saw Flash last week and while it wasn't amazing or anything, it was entertaining. DC movies seem to have a "reverse Marvel effect" where people just EXPECT them to suck and won't even see them out of curiosity. I didn't see Shazam Fury of the Gods, but that film CAN'T have helped Flash... and Flash isn't going to help Blue Beetle and Blue Beetle will probably help tank Aquaman. Also with DC rebooting their universe and everyone knowing it, it seems like these movies just "don't matter" in a lot of people's minds so why bother watching these? Their brand is so damaged it will be intersting seeing Gunn and those guys attempting to redeem it.

so Flash failed.. how does WB see it?

1 Flash failed because Ezra Miller as a lead was a damaged brand… shame but carry on as planned.

OR

2 the old DC Universe itself is a damaged brand so Blue Beetle and Aquaman are destined to fail

If its #2 do they save themselves the indignity of more flops and release these upcoming movies straight to MAX. Would it make financial sense to at least save themselves the additional marketing costs needed to promote those films?

It's too late for Blue Beetle as that film releases in a couple of weeks and the marketing buys have already been made. I doubt they do it for Aquaman either because the first film made a billion dollars and Jason Momoa is hot right now so they may be banking on him and the previous film's success. Bottom line is they kind of have to ride it out and just focus on the next iteration of the DCCU under Gunn. They'd just better hope the DC brand itself isn't damaged at this point.
