Россия invades Україна | UPDATE (20 Apr 2024) - US House passes military aid bill for Ukraine

Wow Russia can’t let Biden enjoy his victory lap.

If Russia does this then I can’t imagine a scenario where Russia doesn’t end up permanently cut off from the world and become the next North Korea. I highly doubt this happens.

If it does happen, then there will have to be an emergency discussion in NATO as to whether or not Article 5 should be invoked as the fallout from a deliberate act such as this will unquestionably impact the territory of NATO member states.

Ukraine waited until Russia "repaired" one of the bridges near Kherson, then struck it again last night with HIMARS. However...the "repairs" are basically just Russia patching the massive, structural holes with asphalt as if they are potholes. They are not repairing the structural integrity of the bridge itself:

Regarding the situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, this is what a commenter on Ukrainian media outlet "24 Kanal" had to say (translated from Ukrainian):

Quote

Actually, the hysteria around the nuclear power plant is reaching its new heights. The Russian sources started to share a “hilarious” document, quoting the head of radiation, biological and chemical weapons protection unit of the Russian Federation, General Major Valeriy Vasil’ev. So the highest expert of their army that is here from the end of March. So, the [Russian] propagandist write that Vasil’ev has addressed the Russian garrison in response to “the panic by international organisations, such as IAEA, regarding the situation in Zaporizhska nuclear power plant”.

Next, he continues with more hysteria. To be honest, I doubt that Vasil’ev really said it. Our experts from the secret service identified the author of this text document – a [pro-russia] separatist Volodja, that fled to Russian in 2014, spent time in Moscow and all those “D/LNR”. Now he came back to the Melitopol and is in change of all the propaganda work there.

Actually, he is also well known to Ukrainian from his “essay” on Russian TV about how teachers are forcing Ukrainian pupils to kill common bullfinches [bird] because they are red [one of the colours of Russian and USSR flags] and to feed blue tits [birds] because they are yellow and blue [colours of Ukrainian flag]. Now he is writing the same king of fiction literary work, but on the subject of nuclear power plants. For example, the claim about “built by Russian people for the Slavic brothers”: let me remind you that in USSR [when the plant was built] there were Slavs, Tajiks, Kazaks and many different ethnicities and nations. Yet, know they are “liberating” the power plant for the Slavs.

We see that all this hysteria is aiming to discredit Ukrainian army. And for our compatriots, that are worried that they [Russians] will blow up the power plant, I can say that it’s almost impossible to destroy the station. And even if the rashist try to do something with this station and there will be a radioactive leak, they will need to evacuate the Northern Crimea, Berdyanks, Mariupol. Then, as it will spread to Novoazovsk and farther… So, in reality they won’t blow up the nuclear power plant, as that would be the last thing that they would do –  to cause a nuclear catastrophe under the watch of the international community. Yet, this kind of “informational noise” keeps spreading. Even some of our Ukrainian sources are saying that the Russia will disconnect the station from Ukrainian electrical grid and connect it to the Russian one. This is not trivial –  you need to work for months to manage it and one hit by HIMARS would destroy all their work.

In reality, Russians are quite careful with the what they do there. There is even a group of experts form ROSATOM [Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation] who tell them [russian army] where you can (carefully) and cannot shoot. For example, they have previously damaged the nigrogen-oxygen station which is important for the nuclear power plant. They have immediately made emergency repairs.

All the hysteria that you are hearing about the Zaporizhja nuclear power plant is just that – Russian propaganda. Yes, there are some safety concerns but they are not as critical as some claim them to be.

UPDATE:

The HARM anti-radiation missile debris found near Russian positions were indeed provided to Ukraine from by the US. They were air launched and they had been adapted to be used from existing Ukrainian jet fighters.

This is a very innovative solution and something that I'll give credit to the Biden admin for (in addition to the other provisions). This is something Ukraine needs, even if they don't have a fully fleshed out "Wild Weasel" capability. Now they can hit back at air defenses.

The U.S. has provided more than $9 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since Russia's invasion.
Quote

The Biden administration announced Monday it is sending $1 billion in new military assistance to Ukraine, marking what the Pentagon said is the largest package of arms and equipment from its inventories since Russia's invasion more than five months ago.

The shipment of weapons and equipment will include more ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), 1,000 Javelin anti-tank missiles, anti-armor systems, mortar systems and tens of thousands of artillery ammunition, as well as 50 armored medical treatment vehicles and medical supplies, the Pentagon said.

The latest delivery of arms from the Defense Department brings the total amount of U.S. security aid to Ukraine to $9.8 billion since President Biden took office last year, including more than $9 billion since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.

"These are all critical capabilities to help the Ukrainians repel the Russian offensive in the east and also to address evolving developments in the south and elsewhere," Colin Kahl, undersecretary of defense for policy, said during a press briefing at the Pentagon.

Ukrainian officials have announced the results of a meticulous months-long investigation that was at times painful and gruesome.
Quote

After months of meticulous, painful and at times gruesome investigation, officials in Bucha said Monday that they had reached what may be the closest they will get to a final accounting of victims of the murderous rampage by Russian troops that set off worldwide outrage over alleged atrocities: 458 bodies, of which 419 bore markings they had been shot, tortured or bludgeoned to death.

Western and Ukrainian outlets circulated a report, likely false, of a Russian general allegedly threatening to destroy Europe’s largest nuclear facility, the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), if Russia could not hold the plant. Multiple news outlets shared a screenshot from the Russian social networking site Vkontakte that claimed to cite the Russian head of the Zaporizhia occupation garrison, Major General Valery Vasilev, stating that Russia had mined the Zaporizhzhia NPP and that the plant would be “either Russian land or a scorched desert.”[1] The screenshot appeared to be a news report posted in a Vkontakte group run by Russian outlet Lenta Novosti Zaporizhia. The outlet itself claimed that the screenshot was from a faked group and denied writing the report.[2] The Russian Ministry of Defense condemned the report and screenshot as a “fake” and claimed that Vasilev was in Uzbekistan at the time he was purported to have made the statement to forces at Zaporizhzhia.[3] Regardless of the origin (or existence) of the original post, the reporting is unreliable. It is indirect and does not claim to cite an official statement or a statement made on any official Russian news or government website.

This likely misreporting distracts from the very real risks of Russia’s militarization of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which may include mining the plant and almost certainly includes the unsafe storage of military armaments near nuclear reactors and nuclear waste storage facilities.[4] Bellingcat geolocated a drone video of the Zaporizhia NPP that was shared by Russian opposition outlet The Insider on August 5. The video depicts Russian military vehicles moving in and around the plant, including military trucks and armored vehicles moving around and into the building containing the first of the plant’s six nuclear reactors.[5] Russian forces have also dug trenches in and around the plant and may have established firing positions.[6] Russian officials claim that Ukraine has repeatedly attacked the plant, while Ukrainian officials claim that Russian forces are attacking Ukrainian positions from within the plant, preventing Ukrainian return fire and essentially using the plant as a nuclear shield.[7] Russian forces have repeatedly shelled the nearby Ukrainian-controlled town of Nikopol, likely from positions in or around the NPP, since July.[8]

ISW continues to assess that Russian forces are likely leveraging the threat of nuclear disaster to degrade Western will to provide military support to a Ukrainian counteroffensive.[9]

Note: ISW does not receive any classified material from any source, uses only publicly available information, and draws extensively on Russian, Ukrainian, and Western reporting and social media as well as commercially available satellite imagery and other geospatial data as the basis for these reports. References to all sources used are provided in the endnotes of each update.

Key Takeaways

  • Reporting of a likely falsified Russian statement distracts from the real risks of a Russian-caused nuclear disaster at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Russian forces continue to conduct attacks from and store military equipment near the plant’s nuclear reactors, likely to play upon Western fears of a nuclear disaster and degrade Western will to provide additional military support to Ukraine.
  • Russian forces conducted ground attacks northwest of Slovyansk and northeast and southeast of Bakhmut.
  • Russian forces continued ground attacks northwest and southwest of Donetsk City.
  • Russian officials postponed reopening the Antonivskyi Bridge after a Ukrainian strike damaged the bridge and nearby construction equipment.
  • Russian forces are deploying less-professional occupation forces and increasing pressure on Ukrainian populations in occupied areas.

Wow. A strike in Crimea:

How is Ukraine hitting these targets? HIMARS don't have that range.

Just now, CitizenVectron said:

That's about 200km away from any feasible ground-based launch site in Ukraine. Drone strike? Bomber run? Ukraine has massively deteriorated Russian air defense in the south.

Speculation is that ATACMS is being used:

The head of Crimean administration has put out a statement that the explosion was the result of an accident while loading ammo, and that no one was hurt and no planes were damaged.

lmao

Yes, an accidental explosion that resulted in simultaneous explosions (up to 7 strikes) across the entire airbase.

Might be AGM88Ds, a fighter at Supersonic speeds and one of these can reach out 150km, plus they have GPS guidance so shutting down your radars won't work, and also makes them viable for general ground strikes.  Since we know Ukraine has these Russia's air defense is going to be shit having to turn radars on and off and moving them so they don't just get destroyed.

Ukraine is being cagey, but claiming it was a home-made weapon, whatever it is (could be a lie, of course). If it was a Ukrainian weapon, then there are three likely possibilities:

  • Re-purposed Neptune anti-ship missile. Range of 280km and rumours are that they can be reconfigured for ground strikes
  • Sabotage by some kind of strike team/undercover partisan group
  • Drone/missile strikes launched from small boat off the coast
