It’s wild that in one generation we went from confirmations being largely ceremonial rubber stampings to the mess it is now

In theory a contentious senate confirmation process is a good thing. But like all theory of american governance, this lie was put to rest by the complete and total abdication of responsibility as an independent branch of government during the Trump administration

Genuine contentiousness could be a good thing, but the contention here isn't genuine.

Nepotism or a move to cow Manchin? Or both?

If she's legitimately qualified then it's likely both palm greasing for Manchin and a test for the senate. Since he'll have a personal stake in the confirmation he'll have a personal stake in the votes his colleagues will cast against. It's canny.

It would be interesting if she doesn't get confirmed. I assume Joe will abstain (I'm pretty sure Mitch did for his wife) so the Republicans could easily use their 50 votes squash this if they want to. Doubt they'd do it, not really worth pissing Manchin off over a relatively small position.
